What's happened to Scotland's wild places and its wild deer? Deerstalker Niall Rowantree takes a tour of the Highlands to find out. He visits Ardgay Game, he talks to deer scientist Dr Cathy Mayne and he stalks a red hind in an area earmarked for new trees. He meets locals to find out how Scottish government agencies and wildlife charities abandoned the Highlands as soon as the pandemic struck, leaving him and other gamekeepers to pick up the pieces as lockdown eased and people poured on to the moors and mountains for recreation. Staying in Scotland, and Roy Lupton has an appeal about eagle falconry, now that the Scottish government has protected mountain hares - a 'protection', he argues , that will lead to their extinction. And staying with Niall, the police clear him and deerstalker Fraser Macdonald of the stag-in-water video, following complaints of cruelty by both animal rights extremists and some deerstalkers. We look at the role of the British Deer Society in this case. David is on the News Stump and Charlie has the best hunting videos on KZfaq in Hunting KZfaq. It's all in this week's #FieldsportsBritain

Very sobering situation in rural Scotland and how the Scottish Assembly aren’t interested in rural life and people. Niall talks a lot of matter of fact common sense and could have listened to him all day. Have signed the petition.

The piece about the state of deer management in Scotland is the best I've seen on the Channel, great photography David and Niall's passion for deer and the environment shine through. I wish more policy makers would watch this show.

One of the best episodes you guys have produced, bringing to the fore the very real issues brought about by Scottish government policies and then furthe compounded by the pandemic. Niall Rowntree should be the voice of the BDS or similar organisation, rather than having to even consider remaining a member.

Always good to see Niall Rowantree back on Fieldsports Channel. Oh Dr Cathy as well of course. Setting aside Roy's personal sport and business, he is 100% correct about blue hares. There are loads on managed grouse moors and virtually none on the moors owned by the public and RSPB. Aligning bits from Roy and Niall's 2 items, as Niall says, we have to get the government and NGOs working with the private sector. It is the private sector, after all, through necessity caused by little better than persecution from the government, that have developed and implemented all the best practices across conservation and land management. Not many laughs tonight but a great episode.

Excellent show. Best one yet perhaps. Fully agree with Cathy Mayne - this is why I became a hunter and I haven't bought meat from a supermarket for 4 years. Not going to comment on the Scottish deer incident as I was not there and, as with many things in the world, if I am not involved I try hard to reserve my opinions.

Another brilliant video, if all the team on FSB were running the countryside wouldnt it be a better place, with comedians like the SNP, just look whats going on at the moment, and Carrie and the Goldsmiths running no.10, not forgetting George Eustaces new boss Mr Packham, devastating country ways, no wonder the country is in turmoil and spare a thought for the fishing industry. Niall and Roy spoke more common sense in half an hour than this lot could in a lifetime. Charlie, it seems never ending with new skullduggery every week, just keep putting it out there. Thanks to you all for your efforts. Regards Alan.

Excellent work as always. Great to see Neil and Dr Cathy back on. Although I'm down south I have done my share of grouse beating, we always see large numbers of hares and I remember times where the ground seems to wriggle with mice, voles and lizards, we get nothing like that on Dartmoor.

Hi guys, nice item on the current situation in deer management in Scotland. You're however wrong on the news item of wolves in the Netherlands. There are officially livig wolves in the netherlands for over 2 years now and a couple has already produced pups for the second year in 2020. The short clip of a wolf crossing the road is actually in Germany as one can see by the reflectors along the road. Keep up the good work!

Well done Fieldsports and Niall the truth and consequential result at last. It saddens me that the BDS were prepared to comment on the incomplete and biased public story and hide behind their binial comment that they reserve the right to comment - in this case grossly unfairly perhaps they’ll learn a lesson. Unfortunately the dive for the floor and to avoid the flack is an all too common reaction from ‘supporting’ organisations.

Went to buy "Highland Game" branded venison from a supermarket in the Glasgow area a few days ago. I looked out of interest where it was sourced expecting to see a district or even estate detailed. It was sourced from NZ! Unbelievable. Makes me even more frustrated having watched this.

Excellent episode tonight, a sobering view of the impact Covid has had on the deer and venison trade in the Highlands and the knock on effects in other areas. Such a sinking feeling when the previous ease of lock down and it's results were mentioned. The disgusting behavior of a few brain dead idiots was appalling but, much praise to the Highland stalkers, deer managers and residents for doing their best to clear up after them. All without the help of the furloughed rangers. Once again the true guardians of the countryside are revealed. Our sporting activities will always be open to attack and abuse by some and Fieldsports Britain has been there to present the real story for over a decade in a fair and balanced way, often with joke and humour aplenty. Tonight's episode was serious for good reason and demonstrates the need for the highest quality journalistic content for which Fieldsports Britain has become globally known.

Very poignant piece on the plight of the highland communities and indeed rural areas through out the UK !Governments just don’t seem interested. Concerning the “Watergate” deer affair I still think the video was ill advised and it wasn’t made clear that the animal was in fact already wounded..It almost seemed those concerned ,were having a “Lark” shooting the Stag in the water!Hope lessons are indeed learned!

I happen to have the privilege of living exactly where, Robbie manages in East Sutherland, and I can confirm the devastation that thoughtless visitors leave behind when they visit this area of outstanding beauty. I can also see with my own eyes how all flavours of politicians poorly defend the countryside. The Highlands is simply fast becoming a ‘get rich quick’ area for those erecting further windfarms that remain idle for up to 50% of the time, rather than encouraging genuine economic develop for this area that is partially dependent upon field sports that assist in making the essential animal management cost-effective. The pandemic and the resultant lack of paying guests has seriously impacted upon the ability of many estates to conduct the essential cull of the Red Deer herds.

It makes me sad to see what is happening in Scotland with all types of hunting and is reflecting what I was able to hear going to an anti hunters meeting. I guess they did not know I was a hunter and I was on one list and have gone to a few other meetings like that. People from the entire Northeast of the US. Call cops on hunters, file complaints, and go for judicial changes if they can not get laws changed.

@Mac-pi4cy

There would have been tree cover there originally. They have gone ovet time due to over grazing by livestock such as sheep and cattle and by artificially high numbers of deer maintained for sporting purposes.Red deer are naturally a woodland species so the balance is wrong somewhere in the system..

It is sad to see wildlife suffering from the same problem the world over, namely rural policy that is controlled by ignorant and indifferent urbanites. In British Columbia elk (our version of red deer) love to eat outplanted seedlings that were raised in nurseries. The soft growing conditions in the nursery make the seedlings very palatable for a few years after outplanting. Trees planted in an area that has been deforested for so long might benefit from mycorrhizal inoculation.
