Paul Childerley takes a vegan out to shoot a deer. Katie Hargreaves is a properly woke wildlife artist - but she is connected enough to the augment to understand that hunting has a place in veganism. Find out how she gets on shooting her first Chinese water deer. Taking the deer process further, we join celebrity chef Tim Maddams and his sidekick, Country Foood Trust boss Tim Woodward, to cook up butternut squashes stuffed with creamy venison (who says game needs to be low fat?). And news editor Ben O'Rourke heads into the murky world of rural crime, joining Northumbria Police for Operation Checkpoint. Charlie has the best of KZfaq's hunting videos in Hunting KZfaq, and David delivers the news on the News Stump. It's beginning to look a lot like #FieldsportsBritain

I've always said that there is an overlap between gamekeepers/deer managers/hunters. I think the only difference is that most vegans want to protect individual animals, whereas the shooters and hunters like to protect the population as a whole. Lovely video, as always chaps.

A great piece with Katie, an intelligent and talented person. I look forward to seeing/hearing more from her. Charlie, you were right when you say there is probably plenty to agree upon in this divide between hunting and non-meat eaters- and then you probably turned off every vegan who might have sought a new insight by calling them ‘bloody minded’. Katie is clearly not a bloodyminded person, yet she is a vegan. I think you were wrong to say that. Anyone is capable of being bloodyminded, no matter what their diet happens to be.
@fieldsportstv

Thanks Doug - good point. I expect the bigger vegan audience for this piece to be for the standalone version on KZfaq, where I don't do the links. I don't expect vegans to watch Fieldsports Britain. I agree that it was a strong 'switch-off' statement, and it is a poor generalisation, but there is also truth there, and I liked the irony hidden in the word. Hope I have explained myself, even if I don't persuade you. / Charlie

Preventing Hearing damage Typically, hearing damage can occur from long exposure to noise at 80-85 decibels. At 110 decibels, hearing damage starts to occur within two minutes of exposure. A rifle without a sound moderator can be more than 150 decibels, to put that into perspective a jet taking off is around 150 decibels and loud enough to cause eardrum rupture. Across several different tests using many moderators of varying designs and manufactures, significant reductions in decibels are present, making a noticeable difference. However, results all showed the moderated centrefire rifles were still recorded at 110 decibels or higher. So, regardless of how many shots you’re planning, it’s still recommended to wear hearing protection.

Awesome program Charlie. Yup, unfortunately poaching is a problem everywhere. I was involved in a pangolin rescue mission after it was confiscated by SAPU (Special Anti Poaching Unit) in Zambia. Unfortunately the animal didn't make it as it was already on its last legs when it was found. In African countries poaching is mostly done for survival and COVID is not helping the situation but, in the UK looks like it's done just for fun?

In my experience steel shot will not effect modern shotgun barrels . Shotgun guns manufactured before 1980 will be effected. What I’ve seen is that the constriction or choke can be shot out of the barrel. Full will end up being modified and modified would end up being improved cylinder.

But is easier if you are (a) game keeper girl (b) land ovner or even farmer .for me impossible I can join a club and with a little bit luck shoot a rifle max 50m I call this heart breaking is like have passion for football been paralysed and never have a chance kick the ball ⚽️ ( specially in this country)

To you it is hunting - to others it can be conservation. Either case, guns are the best tool for the job (which is why I follow this channel, I like shooting). It totally depends on why you are a vegan as well, I suppose. I would personally avoid killing an animal for my pleasure or consumption (I am largely vegan) wherever possible - yet I acknowledge wildlife management/conservation involves population control. Where populations need to be removed for the benefit of the wider environment, it seems wasteful to me to not make use of the animal that is killed either way. I've been involved in managing populations and it isn't nice, but you accept it is necessary - even with a vegan mindset 🙂
