Can Hyundai’s Ioniq 5 drive the entire North Coast 500? The COMPLETE Challenge | Fifth Gear

Fifth Gear

Күн бұрын

Considered by many to be Britain’s most beautiful road drive, the NC500 follows the coastline of mainland Scotland, and as the name implies is 500 miles long. 10 years ago this trip would have been impossible in an EV, but apparently, sufficient rapid charging points now exist to make it doable. To find out we take it on in Hyundai’s futuristic Ioniq 5. The Ioniq costs £40,000 and has a range of 300 miles, so technically one extra recharge should get us around the route. But we all know it won’t be as simple as that. And to add to the jeopardy we will try to complete the whole route in under 48 hours. The clock starts at midnight. Tune in next week for PT 2 and watch our brand new series, in full, via Discovery+ www.discoveryp...

We will have had our 2019 Hyundai Kona Electric for 5 years this coming May. Having frequently driven much longer road trips here in western Canada (BC and adjacent Alberta), our approach is to always charge opportunistically. Rather than pushing on to a more distant charging station (even if we can), we stop more frequently to "top up" to 80%. This means more frequent, but shorter charging stops; and it lowers the odds of being held up if a "must charge" station is either busy or faulty. Love that North Coast 500 road.

I don't disagree that cheaper EVs should be an option. But the average cost of SUVs solds in the UK is 38k and the Ioniq 5 starts at 42k and at 45k for the bigger battery. The 4k price difference will almost certainly pay itself back over the lifetime of the vehicle, due to cheaper running and maintenance costs. I see the big challenge for EV pricing, being affordable compact cars. But when it comes to bigger cars I would say they're pretty comparable in TCO already and will probably out compete them in a few years.

Learning to efficiently drive electric cars is like relearning to drive. I own a 2022 Ioniq 5 Limited AWD and I've managed to get 4.8+ miles per KWH and 300+ miles on a charge. With a mix of acceleration and constant playing with the regenerative break paddles to cost and break. It reminds me of the days of manual transmissions and playing with fuel efficiently. I'm an early adopter of EVe because I love this huge change in mindset.

I have a PHEV and when in and around town, I only use the EV mode. And since buying the car my driving habits have changed enormously. Always lift completely off on downhills. Always pull away gently. Lift of on flats and only dab the accelerator to keep the momentum up. And generally never over do the speed. The benefit of this is two-fold: get the maximum out of the battery range; but also, less stress and road rage.

I’m sure @Rory should know this, as a Leaf owner, but the heater (climate control) and the heater seats & wheel run off totally different circuits. In any Hyundai EV if u go to battery on touchscreen you can see this. Seats take about 150w off 12v circuit, climate take up to 2500w Off main battery circuit. Basically seats and wheel make no difference to range. Heater (and AC cooler) do. Pls don’t dumb it down , does EVs a disservice. Great drive. Loved it!

I did this with my EV 6 this week. It was a treat. There's a couple of things to think of: 1 there's basically only one charge provider along the whole of Scotland. And they usually have a 45 minute charge limit. Also they are only 50kw "fast chargers". So at points it became a chore. There's simply too few good chargers for a busy week.

As soon as you drive any car like you stole it the range drops off dramatically. The point is though that in everyday use and without a mildly manufactured and slightly fake bit of range anxiety a car with 200 plus miles of range is a very practical and worry free option for 99% of drivers. Just as well really because the petrol will not last forever ...

This will be the final era that such EV voyages will be fun. From here on, it will be about fighting with fellow motorists over who gets to sit for 20-60 minutes holding up the queue. I'm happy to be packing a "lifeboat" in the form of a 2cyl Range Extender in an i3 REx. Sure enough, charge up when chargers are not broken, vandalized, occupied or in an unsafe spot. However, if there's any issue, it takes me only 90 seconds to fill the tank and get on with life. Why are PHEVs and Range Extenders being ignored? ...There's a built-in incentive to use electricity (here in the Seattle USA area, per-mile running on petrol is 4x electricity)

Wrong other way around. The 100kw plus fast chargers barely exist and many more will be installed. Soo lots still to improve.

Amazing that in this day and age we're asking questions like this. Can it do 500 miles on one of the most well known charging routes in the country? I should bloomin well hope so since even early Nissan Leafs could. Oh and pretty much anything with an ice in it for the last 80 years or so... My point is the cars are all capable now. Even the 30-odd kWh ones are usable for the odd road trip if you can put up with waiting a while for not a lot more range. The problem hasn't been the cars for years - the infrastructure is a joke. Every single garage should have as many rapids as fuel pumps as a minimum. Then watch as it suddenly becomes really easy to do long runs in pretty much any ev - with only the time spent being different between them. Throw a dart into a map at the moment and even in some of the best ev's you're not guaranteed to be able to get there and there are a lot of places where its very inconvenient. Can't blame the cars for that.

Vicky, you definitely need to reprogram your right foot. The sport of driving EVs on a long distance trip is efficiency. Frankly it should be the sport for everyone, every day. My average last year in our BMW i4 eDrive40 is 4.6 miles/kWh!

This is why I always gravitate towards Fifth Gear compared to Top Gear (when it was at its peak in popularity). Fifth Gear has the perfect balance between fun, and informative. The last few Top Gear seasons with Jeremy Clarkson and the boys became way too theatrical and information in their test/reviews became heavily diminished.

I love EV's but try that journey in the height of summer and see how many spaces there are at the chargers, I have done the NC500 several times at different times of the year in both my Motorhome and Impreza and never seen the roads that quiet.

btw, stuff like lights and wipers have a negligible effect on the range. rain might, going uphill(specially if u don't come back down in the same charge) definitely will. also, charging to 95% isn't really a thing most EV drivers do unless its a last resort.

Disagree with their 19 chargers comment. I’ve counted more than 30 rapid and more than 100 fast chargers. Not to mention, if you really got stuck (incompetent) any 3 pin plug will give you more range if your patient. How many petrol stations are up there?
@pangolin83
@pangolin83 2 жыл бұрын
Does that exclude all the chargers that have restrictions (Tesla chargers, hotels/shops that require your custom, car dealerships etc.) and that are served by accessible public networks? I am all in for EVs but this whole fragmentation thing is an issue that still needs to be solved. Also remember, a 500 mile journey can be done on one tank by most cars that are similarly sized or bigger than a Golf.

@@jameshblack what, the North of Scotland? There are like 5 people live there and hundreds of chargers not to mention the people who do live there usually gave private parking so can have home chargers. For tourists, Scotland has plenty of chargers. More than anywhere else in the U.K. with the possible exception of London….. You clearly ether don’t have an EV or have never been to the North of Scotland or both!

We have a Tesla Model 3 and a 2001 Boxster S (we’ve had from new) and I think we’ve decided to get the Ioniq5 based on this review. We know Vicki is a real deal driver and if she enjoys it then it’s good - period. And we love the design and space. Thought of buying a Porsche 992 but I think it’s too late for ICE cars now…and the range in the Taycan is too short. The Hyundai is much more about taking your time than hauling ass through corners, but that has its own pleasures. Time for a change.
