This was epic you guys! 👍 We Germans should be full of guilt as ashamed as well, for how we looked like in the 90's! I go down to my knees because I was already a teen, full involved in the GDR community [without an accent you noticed, right] and also responsible for this pictures we painted for the rest of the world. Anyways 😂 The longer the video last the better it gets. There was so much within this short movie. Where Jerry is holding the f6 cigarettes, they btw survived until today. Also so much proved stereotypes and the guy in Cologne who's talking to Jerry, made me falling down from my couch 😂

@@ThomasAndAbe au contraire, it’s one, if not the German trait to really take the piss and utter the most insane nonsense with the straightest of faces - which is excactly what he did. As a German, I find this documentary also hilarious. Especially, after watching "Jeremy Clarkson - King of Controversy". With that in mind, you can see how he’s just trolling and being deliberately ignorant of facts about Germany and England, for example. Claiming that England is better at football, has prettier cars, better music or more distinguished history is just a-class trolling.

It used to be that the only SAFE drinking water was from the kitchen 'cold' tap which was at mains pressure, all the other taps hot and cold were fed from a loft water tank which could become contaminated over time, this was ALSO fed by the mains supply but only gravity was used from the tank to the various other taps and boiler feeds. Most of the tanks were plastic or galvanised steel with just a cover on top for ease of access and were almost never cleaned internally(awkward and difficult job mostly)

At 11:14 the "East German town" shown is actually the Kornmarkt in Zwickau, Saxony. It's where the aforementioned Holiday Inn used to be located, by now called First Inn. Never has been particularly busy of spot because as there is no real business there, while down the street is the Hauptmarkt with cafes and other shops, quite busy back then and even today. Also; Back then 20:30 was a somewhat misleading time to pick in Germany to judge "activity" of people on the street. German TV has the tradition of showing news at 20:00, and then some interesting movie/show at 20:15. So between 20:00 and around 22:30 plenty of German streets can be eerily empty, particularly back then when streaming wasn't even much of an option.

@Zen Well, maybe I am overimagining things here, because I like him as well as being German myself. But I do feel like whenever he insults people or is racist about something, it is not in fact meant that way. Not in an insulting or deminishing way at least. It may be criticism, but in many cases it is his way of processing difficult subjects into a story that is lighthearted enough to be enjoyed. I mean he managed to scrape quite a few parts of deep-rooted world-moving problems that originate in Germany, while not making them so overbearing that the 30min long episode becomes a heavy history documentary. Because that is never what was intended.

As a historically interested would like to add that Germany is not only a 100 years old. It was the Holy Roman Empire of German Nationality which was founded in 962 AD and devolved 1806 so Germany has over 1100 years of national history

Gotta love that even to this day you can still see East Berlin from space, because the old street lamps were never fully replaced with better ones, so they glow differently on nighttime photographs.

@@AlfaGiuliaQV I mean, some of the most recent photos of berlin from space (where the differences are still visible) were made by Matthias Maurer while he was staying on the ISS during the ESA mission "Cosmic Kiss". He took off from earth on 11. November 2021 and landed back on earth in may 2022. But yeah I guess in that time span of not even a year, poor city of berlin randomly found a crate of gold and decided to invest it all in lightbulbs and payments of workers to change those. What an Idiot you are.

Pay no attention to the comment before me, he shouldn't feel ashamed for liking to be exploited by men. The world is busy and stressed, It's not a German problem. this was filmed in the dark ages aka 2001 with little to no internet. Maybe 1/3 of these people had the internet at home. Life was easier and more carefree.

It is quite funny how Clarkson claims that Germans have no humour and then he speaks to the German pilot, who said things like; "I quite enjoyed the Luftawaffe, until you bastards started shooting at us" and "I am 78, but I have to admit that I sometimes feel like 76". This is Monty Python at its best...
