The funny thing about the spinning sabers having that huge hole in the middle, that was exactly how Kanan Jarrus from Star Wars Rebels defeated the Grand Inquisitor. While the inquisitor was just spinning the saber, Kanan stuck 2 lightsabers into that gap and sliced the hilt.

Part of me wonders if they were mandated to have that dumb spinning saber by the Emperor. By consciously making the design stupider while giving the illusion that it's more useful, Inquisitors can be struck down if they become insubordinate relatively easily by Vader or Palps. Oof, halfway into this I feel your frustration seeping in from the story but not from the fights themselves. I'd argue the RotS had more egregious errors than the fights here but I think you're angrier at the story but not at the choreography, Star Wars always had bad spinning but you were never this criticial-ish. A good watch nonetheless

One thing about turning on and off light sabers during fights. It's an legit existing technique in star wars canon but is looked down upon by both Sith and Jedi. Sith consider it cowardly and weak to use tricks like that against their enemies, and Jedi forbid it because they consider it to brutal. It's easy to forget that Jedi don't really wanna kill anyone (most of the time)

An idea for a video: "Things to aim for, and things to avoid in fight choreography", so you can put all of your core, foundational thoughts on this subject in one, well scripted, structured place. This might even be quite a good exercise for you to sit down and formalise your ideas in as nuanced a way as possible, taking into account context, realism, as well as dramatic goals in a way that presents better alternatives to bad tropes. There's probably a bunch of people in your audience who would really appreciate a single accessible resource to guide or influence their own fictional works

I love the idea; however, fights can be so varied, even with two people dueling with the same weapon in a controlled environment, that one comprehensive video may be impossible. A video covering the basics/fundamentals as a sort of intro or brief overview to a larger choreography series could absolutely work, though. I’d definitely use it as a reference/source and watch for “edutainment.”

@@MiraBoo Well this is more or less why I think it'd be an interesting exercise for him. It might be quite a challenge for him to pin down universals that run for all situations, but doing so could be quite enlightening, while also hopefully showing quite how much context matters and how there can be exceptions to "rules". It'd almost be an exercise in finding the "spirit" that he thinks all fights should have
@UnreasonableOpinions
@UnreasonableOpinions 2 жыл бұрын
Not even necessarily a mega-long feature, just a simple video of standards and context would be good. It would also let you clarify things like the way this sort of frame-by-frame breakdown is fun, but not actually a good way to plan your choreography since people don't move or see that way. Showing examples of good flourish versus bad, or where ineffective attacks make sense and when they don't.
@williamchristy9463
@williamchristy9463 2 жыл бұрын
@@hollandhenry7517 It's really not fucking difficult. Make something that actually *looks* like two people fighting. Anyone whose ever *seen* good fighting choreography can *tell* you the difference. It's genuinely night and day. Do things from binds, or don't bind. Throw strikes that'd actually hit, if they weren't blocked. Employ logical technique-and-trick ways to move the dramatic arc of your fight, rather than bullshit. Employ camera angles that'll actually let you *see* what the actors are doing. Take into account character skill level-- if they're professional, employ techniques from the martial arts they're supposed to know. If not, have them look like they have less an idea what they're doing-- swing wider, and the like. Basically-- watch anything from the channel scenic fights, and then watch one of Shad's negative fight scene autopsies-- anything from the new trilogy will work. Bad choreography exists because people who don't know what fighting looks like try to make actors who can't fight, look like they're fighting. Every time, they fail. Sometimes, they *know* they've failed, and try to cover it up. It almost never exists for narrative reasons-- though, admittedly, there are some *moments* that can be crappy for narrative reasons.

It coasted into the hanger too smoothly, the ship popped up into a hover position and brought the shields back on while Anakin was gawking at the droids, and it rotated in place to aim directly at the generators. Quick note on your quarrel with the Jedi code shad: compassion is definitely good in the Jedi code, meaning the Jedi strive for unconditional love for all living beings. It’s the possessive love that is a bad thing, because the Jedi need to able to put the greater good over their own wants and desires. So Obi-Wan’s motivation in this scene shouldn’t be that he has a deep emotional connection to the twins, it SHOULD be that if he fails to stop Vader, the twins could die and the galaxy may be doomed. It’s his job as a Jedi Knight to destroy the Sith. That is all the motivation he needs. Obi-Wan’s power as a Jedi is strengthened through calming of the mind, letting go of his fear and allowing the force to flow through him as an ally, instead of as a tool.

The jedi philosophy was wrong and it's been proven time and time again in starwars Canon, They were wrong in their failings with Darth Revan and they were wrong in their failings with Vader, Over 1000 years if dogmatic ignorance lead to their greatest failures as an institute.. Even when Luke is trained Yoda remains stuck in his ways and Luke wins against vader despite not having his full training because Luke believed in his friends and the light in his father, in the old Canon when Luke started his academy he allowed his students to form connections and even use the "dark side" abilities he just didn't want them to become consumed by the darkness.. also in every scene where a sith lord is defeated in the movies, (idk about the new 3) The jedi gives in to emotion and their connections to their loved ones, Obi Wan beats Maul when he steps it up after qui gons death, Luke bests vader when vader threatens his sister, Anakin bests Dooku when both of his mentors are in danger, Ironically Yoda the jedi with the emotional range of a slug was unable to defend his temple and defeat Palpatine.. In knights of the old republic 1 and 2 the jedi code is questioned and there are countless examples of how what they believed was not the right thing, their abstinence from war let the mandolorians pillage the galaxy in failing to react they lost their best students when Darth Revan abandoned the order to stop the mandolorians, this failure would be echoed 1000 years later with their ignorance of the dark side of the force would leave them blind to the threat right under their noses, had they not tried to neuter their students emotionally and instead encouraged and guided them they might have been able to show Anakin the way, but their beliefs left him in the dark, literally.

It’s mostly a problem with how they showed it. It didn’t look particularly strong, and she didn’t seem particularly affected by it. Disney missed some great moves for Vader, that would look cool, make sense, and not mess with what Vader does in later movies. Like showing that he kicking her shin destroys her leg. He could even either simply rip the lightsaber from her hand, or rip it from her while he tosses her across the room. But instead it looks like a little bonk to the shin made her let go.

The force giving one strength via one’s passions is canon. Problem is, for the old Jedi Order it was largely considered to be skirting the dark-side, which is why it was never taught or was actively warned against. Probably in part because strong passions is essentially ALWAYS what energizes the Sith - primarily the darker passions like hate, etc. It was only the new Jedi Order under Luke that changed things, where the Jedi learned how to draw strength and power from their passions - primarily their POSITIVE passions like love, compassion, and so-on. It was a wellspring of power always available to all force sensitives, but one which the old Jedi were without as they strove to avoid it. So, technically, the scene doesn’t break canon (not that it would make a difference to Disney / Lucasfilm, and theirs!); but Obi probably woulda felt dirty about it, considering all he had been taught his entire life.
@LadyDoomsinger
@LadyDoomsinger 2 жыл бұрын
As I understand it, the Jedi Order (of the prequels) had, somewhere in their long history, confused "controlling their passions" for "repressing their passions". They came to view any expression of emotion or attachment as a path to the Dark Side, and would go out of their way to stamp out volatile emotions (whether love or hate) in their Younglings (and older Jedi); this was why Anakin was "too old" to be a Jedi; the Jedi were relying on indoctrination and arguably even a sort of brainwashing to make younglings reject emotion. Anakin was too old for this kind of conditioning - being told to suppress (or let go) of his fears and emotions only aggravated him further (and made him feel guilty about having such emotions in the first place.) Notice, that while Luke does embrace his emotions (specifically in the form of his love for Leia and Anakin), he manages not to be ruled by his emotions. He is able to control his actions, and act in accordance with Jedi philosophy (peace and pacifism) despite his emotions. Unlike the past Jedi, he doesn't suppress them to the point where he feels nothing (or refuses to admit to himself that he feels something) - rather he accepts what he feels as part of him, and is able to transcend these feelings to do the right thing. I think this is what the Jedi were intending to be all along; but at some point in ages past, their philosophy got confused and twisted, mired in rigid doctrine and inflexible tradition, that they lost their way (which allowed the Sith to rise against them and form the Galactic Empire). How Disney Star Wars fits into any of this, I have no idea - I stopped caring, and don't consider any of it canon anyway.

This is wrong. Mace Windu quite literally invented a fighting style that was just a bootlegged version of a dark side fighting style. He has, in the EU, taught it pratically half the jedi order by the time he dies, and in the Disney Canon he's taught at least 3 people, who have gone on to teach others. Moreover, Luke's 'new jedi order' has been demonstrated to demonize passions and connections the same way as the Galatic Republic in accordance with Disney's canon -- the only canon that matters in regards to the content Disney produces. Moreover, to your last point, Obi Wan has actively used dark side manuevers in his fighting as early as Attack of the Clones, seemingly without much moral lamentations it seems.

Also, regarding jedi philosophy: the jedi preach the "no attachments" philosophy, but it definitely isn't how they actually get their strength. After all, if you aren't attached, why care if the Sith break all the things you aren't attached to. Pretty much no jedi is attachmentless, but they really mean "don't let your passions overcome you". Now, whether that is an in-universe inconsistency (the kind of inconsistency that is very true to life because the characters themselves are inconsistent) or whether it is just accidentally written in, I don't know, haha.

@jakobrenner2230 2 жыл бұрын
The no attachment thing believe it or not is actually not an integral part of Jedi philosophy, but something that actually came much later from the inception of the Order. Basically what happened is that Jedi started falling to the dark side and had a tendency to make huge wars with massive collateral damage when they did. Because most of their motives for falling was because of revenge, the Order as a whole ended up concluding that it would be better if they trained their own when they were very young and forbade attachments because of probable dark side influence. While this method did have it’s benefits and did decrease the number of fallen Jedi during the later wars with the Sith, it ultimately came to bite them in the arse hard during the Rise of the Empire era for obvious reasons.

15:40 an interesting thought to consider: lightsaber fighting would be closer to modern sabre fencing than to historical longsword fighting because the swords are very light, it is usually a duel, and you win if you can make your sword barely touch the other person's body. With that in mind, Obi-Wan didn't even need to withdraw and thrust here. Any sabre fencer would have seen the exposed hand (wrist technically if it is sabre fencing) and done a quick tap for an easy point. With lightsabres, that "point" is the opponent losing their weapon hand (in this case, losing it again, lol).

I can see Obi-Wan "sparing" Anakin at the end of RotS because killing your defenseless brother in the heat of emotional intensity is a great way to fall to the Dark Side. Hell, Anaking killing a defenseless Dooku while under emotional intensity is a major contributing factor to his Fall. The problem is that its a lot harder to justify Obi-wan not killing Darth Vader when he has acknowledged that Anakin is gone. Though I am of the opinion that Obi-wan and Vader should have never met in this mini series at all. I have to disagree about one thing. Your complaint about Obi-wan's dodging instead of slicing Vader in half at 52:10 does seem like a valid point, it even seems glaringly obvious, except that Vader is in the midst of a full spin that will complete no matter what. If Obi-wan sliced him then, Vader's upper body would still complete the spin and Obi-wan would join him in death. Remember, we're talking about lightsabers, not metal swords. We're also talking about the Force guiding one's actions. Sensing the end result, the Jedi is forced not to follow through with what would otherwise be an obvious strike with metal swords. Therefore, as painful as it is to admit, this choice not to take advantage of a seemingly obvious opportunity is actually wise, assuming he doesn't want to die or come out disfigured. Even if he swept his leg, Vader would complete the spin and his saber would go low, slicing Obi-wan in half.

TWO things that would’ve made this series better, plot wise. 1. Reva is trying to find Obi-Wan, because she knows she’s not strong enough to defeat Vader, but still wants revenge and believes Kenobi is the only one strong enough to defeat him. That may have gave Reva some more interesting characterization to work with? It may give her a reason to go after Luke, not to kill him, but to have leverage to force Kenobi to fight Vader? 2. After Kenobi defeats Vader, a good change would be, he’s going to kill him, but Vader gets air support from a tie-fighter coming in, that forces Obi-Wan to withdraw, without killing him, they could even flash a quick cut away of Vader pressing a button when the fight starts going bad, to show he’s calling for support. Sure, it’s Deus ex machina, but I’ll take that over what we got, everyday of the week.

Also, if you notice in the OT; while Luke does accept and embrace his passion (in the form of his love for Leia and Anakin), he isn't ruled by emotion. He controls his passion, rather than suppressing it (as the old Jedi did), and perhaps that was the point all along; that the Jedi Order, somewhere along the way had confused "control" of emotion for "suppressing" emotions.

Head canons: Apparently-static binds are a mind game. The combatants are feeling each other's power and trying to predict the next move, and forming an intent to get fancy with it may be more telegraphed than an actual big strike would be. Remember, after all, that the Force grants a small hint of precognition. In most cases, the best move would be to watch for the best opportunity to disengage. Blocking a saber with the Force takes an immense amount of skill and concentration, so even someone with Vader's power would have to go wholly on defense to do so instead of counterattacking with the other hand. A lesser Force user may not have even been able to block that way.

The problem with poison & weapons is the delivery mechanism. Just dipping a blade in poison is going to be extremely ineffective, as metal isn't particularly absorbent. On top of that, by the time you're close enough to stick somebody with a hypothetical poisoned blade, you're already sticking them with a blade so the poison is kind of pointless. Poison-tipped arrows and blow-darts are documented as having been used, as those are effective means of delivering the poison and make the weapon in question significantly more effective than it would otherwise be without poison on it.

Added to this it'd need to be so incredibly fast acting that it starts to significantly impair the opponent within seconds of delivery, because you have to be within melee range to ever apply the toxin with a dagger/swrod or whatever. This is ignoring the added problems of the toxin needing to be easily stored, stable enough to last from purchase to battle and not being washed off when it rains during the battle. Adding to the other problem of having on your person at all times a sharp object that if you touch will almost certainly kill you instantly. Have fun sharpening/reapplying the poison on that knife without touching anything except the handle at any point.

Excellent as always. The only criticism I have with Shad’s reviews is when he talks about one fighter disengaging their blade or moving in a way that leaves them “open” and he says “they’re wide open now, the other guy could just get them.” While it’s true you don’t want to leave yourself open, I feel like judging that in slow motion isn’t really fair since at speed, I don’t really think the fighters would be able to react to their opponents being “open” fast enough to retaliate the way Shad thinks they should. Like spins for example, I feel like by the time a fighter processes that their opponent’s back is to them and they’re open, the spin is done before they could actually do anything to take advantage of it. That’s my only “benefit of the doubt” opinion I have for fighters when reviewing their fight in slow motion.

I agree that watching fight scenes in slow motion can be a bit silly and can easily be way over critical (suppose that's the point though), but the assertion that they can't react quick enough doesn't really work out IRL. If your blade is in front of yourself, there is a relative short distance you need to move your hand to either defend or attack, if the blade is not in front you that distance many times greater. Moving this distance of course takes time, and they are already reacting within the time it takes to to move the short distance. The reason sword people get so bent about spins, is because the spin doesn't just take a few times more time, it takes an astronomical amount of time (relative to how fast a normal move is) all while the non-spinner isn't concerned whatsoever about being attacked because the spinning person's blade is usually not even near them. That said, some benefit-of-the-doubt options that can still make martially questionable fights enjoyable are: They just missed the opening or are getting exhausted (people make obvious mistakes allot when reviewing combat footage) The person is not taking advantage of the openings because they are toying with the opponent. And finally, realizing that the fight was choreographed to be fun, look cool, be friendly to the film's budget and safe for the actors.

@@deadlymarmoset2074 Good reply! Thank you. I was partially worried I'd get hate for my comment. And of course you're right. And plenty of shad's points are valid. Aiming at nothing, doing a crazy move when a simple one works more efficiently. Doing something non lethal when you're trying to kill. All valid, And also just what happens when you're filming a choreographed sequence rather than just fighting, they have to avoid really hitting each other and won't always make the most efficient move, which is why if you look at people in larp, who wear decent protective gear, and use safety weapons, they sort of just bash at each other aggressively. Actors have to avoid hitting each other, both are different to what I imagine someone who had to train for real would look like. By "can't react quick enough" I suppose I mean "not sure if they should react" or "waiting to see how to react" I do stage combat which definitely isn't the same as a fight to the death with laser swords, and it could just be my own way of doing things, but I try to avoid rushing in for an attack when my opponent is in the middle of a movement. If they're doing something, I don't want to try doing something too. I want to figure out what they're doing and protect myself from it. I imagine real fighting looks more like it does in "the duelist" with a lot of watching and waiting. So yeah, suspension of disbelief is important in starwars but also they should try a little harder to choreograph what makes sense.

Fighters at extremely high levels react faster than you realize. The subconscious isn't reflex, it's faster. A highly well trained fighter could be on someone turning their back in an instant, and we're talking about Force sensitives here who can act even faster. There's a nice scene from DBZ where Frieza blows up a mountain, and even though Goku's aura is not visible, the rock fragments shatter in mid-air as they fly towards Goku -- implying that Goku has an aura around him, even if it's invisible. I would just use the logic that a visible aura just means they're putting more power into the barrier compared to usual.

What they would do as precogs is, I imagine, to either disengage because the bind limits their possibilities or to do small movements while holding the bind to feel out their opponent and to control the possibilities in their favor. Standing perfectly still doesn't change anything unless they are waging a force war with their minds or something. It is a static situation until you introduce a new variable or change an existing one.

@@andrewjustice210 because the showrunners don't either. You'd fight very differently if you could see the future. There would be an emphasis on psychological, not physical, warfare. Both parties would try to manipulate each other. Jedi and Sith would be constantly attacking each other psychologically, since even a moment of weakness would be fatal. The physical moves are irrelevant if you already know the outcome. I don't actually know of anything that does this so I would default to The Gamer-manga's interpretation: Factions have foretellers specifically for this purpose and they wage a constant war in trying to change the future in their favor and to obscure the future or hide details of it from their opponents. You need to control what information your opponent has access to.

With regard to Canon saying that Jedi must forgo all attachement in order to keep balanced, that was the Jedi Order's way of doing things. They were the ones who were all air nomad telling the jedi to not love. Hell, Ki' Adi Mundi had a wife and didn't love her! But the two strongest Jedi in the order (besides Yoda) were Windu and Anikin. The reason why was that they used their attachments to make them stronger, Mace had a tragic backstory and he actually toed the line of the Sith and Anikin loved lots of people. So Obi-Wan becoming more powerful with the protective instinct makes total sense.

I've been waiting for this video for ages now and not disappointed at all, you nailed it! I would like to add a comment or two about the arcing and sparking with the lightsabers now. Before they only arced and sparked when they hit something else, now they do that when contacting each other now. The original writer for the original Obi-Wan Kenobi movie has revealed some details in some interviews that would've made this series a whole lot better and not break any canon, specifically it would've solidified canon the way his script originally was. - Reva didn't know Anakin and Vader were the same until Obi-Wan told her and that's when she had a turn of beliefs and died protecting Obi-Wan from Vader. - Obi-Wan and Cody were on Tatooine together watching after Luke and Cody stayed behind to watch after Luke while Obi-Wan left Tatooine for some reason. This would explain how Luke knew about the Clone Wars because Cody could tell him some pretty good stories about them. - Obi-Wan and Cody would get into scuffles with Stormtroopers and would dispose of their bodies in the Sarlaac pit. This would explain the Stormtrooper body we saw in its belly in The Book of Boba Fett and the actor who played the Tusken leader in The Book of Boba Fett said he played that Stormtrooper in the Kenobi show and there was an interesting story behind it but they cut it out because we never saw it. I'm just waiting to hear more about this original script, hopefully it will be released like The Duel of the Fates and other scripts so we can see everything that was originally planned because it sounds like they had a much better story in the beginning before they rewrote everything. Great video and looking forward to your next one! 👍✨🔥💥⚔🛡

Obi-Wan‘s over the head pose with a light saber. I’ve actually found to be not that bad. I know from experience especially when it is dark in the place we were dueling or playing with one even the LED light sabers will blind you if you hold them in front of you. So a good guard would be held above your head giving light to see the entire fight but still offensive. Holding it in regular guards like a regular sword would simply blind you making it very hard to focus on the fight

To comment on 27:03 In legends, light saber sparring was done with modified light sabers or with the containment fields turned so high that they would effectively bounce off of solid matter, including flesh, incurring a painful zap at worst. To my knowledge, Disney canon has not confirmed or contradicted this yet, or provided any analogous explanation.

I'm enjoying seeing the Force used in more powerful, better ways than we may have seen before, but at the same time it seems almost random... sometimes it's used, sometimes they seem to forget they have it. I think the "Obi-Wan spares Vader" scene would've worked if they brought the context of the quote in RotS where Padme tells Obi-Wan that there's still good in him before her death, without any of the "Then my friend is truly dead" lines this would've actually made sense that he spared him, because he really thinks he can be redeemed.

I've had a lot of gripes with this series, but the lightsaber duels in episodes 5 and weren't one of them...although I would have liked to have seen a more dynamic environment like a waterfall or a water-based planet in the middle of a thunderstorm for the final duel and not another dead planet. Great video as always, Shad! I will say I have to disagree with your criticisms about Obi-Wan's character. It makes so much sense to me that given everything he went through in Episode III that he would be a broken man, disconnected from his former ideals and also that he wouldn't have kept up with his training. That's the point of this show is to show him going from that to the start of the man we see in Rebels and then in episode IV. I also agree that there was a lot wrong with the way they did that, but specifically regarding where he is at the beginning of the show, I feel like Obi-Wan's character makes sense.
