This is by far the best Top Gun: Maverick analysis type video. A fast jet pilot talking about what he loves and pointing out the good things, while making good comments of possible differences between the movie and reality, but all done in a way that is engaging, and not patronizingly negative like most others from pilots or viewers. Love it!

100% agreed, its not like hes trying to take away the excitement from the film, where a lot of others try to prove how far off a form of entertainment is from reality. we know its a movie and we know its not all real, but it sure is amazing to watch, why ruin that for others and yourself

Yep. I loved it as well. I watched the C.W. Lemoine review of the movie and he was pretty negative on a lot of stuff, seems to be forgetting it's a movie, not a documentary. This pilot here did it perfectly. Toed the line between pointing out the mistakes but not being negative about it, instead educating us on what would be right.

As a pilot myself when he referred to the test pilot scene with Mav and it’s relation to being spiritual in the moment is as very accurate. That moment to divide your attention from a machine to what’s going on around you is the connection you create with the sky.

When I was in flight school I had a similar moment the very first time I broke through a cloud. Although I’ve experienced this as a passenger, it felt surreal when I was the one flying. With the machine under my control.

The Mach 10 sequence was so beautiful. I expected Top Gun to be good, but I never imagined we would get such amazing cinematography. This movie reminded me of why I love cinema.

Considering the fact that the filmmakers contacted DARPA and many other agencies who'd usually design aircraft for the USAF, it speaks volumes about the attention to detail in this film.

The fact this guy takes into consideration the residents, during the Mach 10 test is a highlight for me. without seeing this video I wouldn't have even realised he was over land.

Unauthorized sonic booms will eventually make it back to the military base of the originating flight (police switch boards tend to light up with reports from local residents). This will be followed shortly by a very uncomfortable meeting between the offending pilot and his/her immediate superior.

The Darkstar is most likely flying over 125k feet of altitude. I highly doubt it matters if he’s over land or sea at that point.

@@mgpalardythough it is over 10 times the speed of sound. I think the tremendous pressure compensates the altitude and would still make loud boom on the ground

at 2:32, Someone found out the hand signal. The signals maverick was doing was the "Radio Down" one, and the one the Su-57 Pilot was doing was "Follow me, Bearing 330"

My headcanon is the pilot that survived was the son of one of the pilots Mav did the parallel flight with and realized in that moment that the pilots were American. Meanwhile the wingman just thought it was one of their guys who had a busted radio.

@@TheXaelem Yes, I'm sure they grew a land mass for the movie. They used those coords for the same reason they just say "enemy". Why slap someone in the face when you can make it obvious who you mean without ever looking at them? Only one country left in the world that flies F-14s, and that's Iran. The terrain matches up as well. The Su-57s are a BIG stretch but Iran and Russia are military allies so I allow for it because it was an awesome part of the movie. I've seen enough debates on this subject to have picked my horse... and it won't be a photo finish.

Really loved this breakdown, he doesn't sound like the typical pretentious fighter pilot that is roasting every tiny detail in a movie and saying it's shit, he accepts that is still a movie and an 1:1 dogfight would be super technical and maybe not as engaging for general audiences, also what a great use of vocabulary he has

Most would get over technical and forget the movie aspect of it, realism is great, but you'd never achieve it 100% in a huge budget blockbuster, most experts need to get that and realise that the only way would be if you sing all the filming yourself

little side note on the mach 10 scene: it's no surprise you can't survive something like that by using an ejection seat, however during the x-15 program the scientists proposed a sort of "ejection capsule" for the craft, so probably in this scene Maverick gets saved by an ejection capsule in the SR-72 Darkstar, I still doubt it would be survivable but using an ejection capsule instead of a seat is way more plausible

Eject pods indeed the only way to survive and some were designed to withstand high speeds not sure if Mach 10 though.

Bill Weaver survived a failed ejection at mach 3.2 while flying a (then still in development) SR-71 that *disintegrated* around him. He was completely uninjured Maverick would also need lottery winning levels of luck but it is plausible.

@@lukeskylicker The aircraft disintegrated around Weaver and Zwayer. Weaver said he didn't initiate an ejection and the seat never left the airplane. He was literally ripped right out of it.

4:35 I think the hostile pilot didn't attempt the same manoeuvre because he was significantly lower and in a canyon, attempting that manoeuvre in those circumstances would be a death sentence. Other than that, really enjoyed this. Paul Tremelling is a very good guy, recommend his book about the Harrier.

In the canyon with the Su behind him, Mav chucked out a bunch of flares. That might have been a winning technique if he timed it right before a narrow or twisty part of that canyon.

Harrier pilots are a special breed! Re. the survivability of a disintegration at Mach 10 - well, the rest of the film could be viewed as his dying lucid dream - explains all the call backs, his heroic role and the reprise of the F14. Too dark for mainstream viewers but a nice theory.

I love seeing him smile at times during the Darkstar scene. Even having seen and done so many amazing things as a pilot himself, Mr. Tremelling stills shares that sense of awe we all felt during this incredible scene. Awesome. I have been onboard a corvette (main deck) in and out of a training session, he is absolutely right, there is no talking apart from commands and brief information. In the beginning it was fun, new, in the end it was a bore feast. I understand why movies need to have some drama.

If you want more of Paul Tremelling, he's done a cool interview with Jell-O Aiello from the Fighter Pilot Podcast where he uses his experience as a fighter pilot to compare flying STOVL (short take off and vertical landing) Harriers for the Royal Navy and CATOBAR (catapult launch and wire-arrested landings) on the Super Hornet during his US Navy exchange. Interesting combination of experiences!

Great video! Commander Paul is an excellent personality to break down these scenes, and demonstrates his obvious wealth of knowledge. There were some inaccuracies in the movie, but it still was a thrilling cinematic ride. Not everything can be textbook accurate ;)

Every pilot react video to this film has been extremely postive. Who would've thought a sequel to an 80s cheese would be such an important part of cinema. Let's hope many other directors push for this realism. Less CGI more practical and stunts is the way film needs to go.

Don't know if you've seen the episode of Mover ruins Movies where he talks to one of the guys who did the CGI on this film, he explained there is waaaaay more CGI than what most people think (i mean the entire final dogfight is all CGI apart from the actors)

Great analysis. Managed to keep a straight face thru some of the more "off the wall" scenes. As a 29 year Marine Aviator I enjoyed watching the movie knowing parts of it have been somewhat embellished Love the fact that they used real airplanes as much as they did.👍

Have known Tremmers since 1999, (not allowed to publicly call him a friend since the infamous court case of 2003!). Had privilege of working with him numerous times from my superior platform. He’s a great pilot, greater person and has written a book which is even greater still. If you or anyone you know has ever wondered about military flying, buy it. In fact buy 2 or 3 they will make Christmas more special for those you love/like or in the case of Tremmers and me,tolerate at a distance no less than 400m.

The scene is a tribute to Chuck Yeager who defied orders and broke the speed barrier. Any pilot, race car driver, or astronaut will tell you they inspired by him.

I think the funniest thing about this film is the way the pilots react and talk in the film. As someone who works with pilots on a regular basis and many ex military pilots. They are calm to the point of death. And these guys in the film are freaking out just lining up lasers. Their focus must be so calculated that during all these maneuvers they are focusing on breath and muscle tensions and all these other things on top of their equipment and mission. If they were so nervous just shouting at each other with every order they wouldn’t be able to regulate their high G turns without passing out and therefore die. Good luck to any hot blooded pilot because lack of control of your blood pressure while taking high G means loss of consciousness. (Yes I understand that is a simplification of a complex biological system and the interaction with pilots)

I thank him for not being a hot shot as seen is so many other break down videos. On the contrary, you actually pointed out that most things shown are plausible. In the end, it's Hollywood. Which the I-know-better-and-need-to-tell-everyone-about-it, tend to often forget. And let's not forget that some military stuff are most likely not even allowed to put in a movie, for obvious reasons I assume.

I'm not a pilot (though I once wanted to be one). I've only just seen this movie, maybe a week ago, and I've watched a lot of pilot reactions so far, and this one is probably the best one I've watched. I like the use of "plausible" here because it bridges that gap of while a scene might not be realistic, the goal makes some sense ...maybe. It's very interesting from these videos to see the difference in experiences between each fighter reactor though. I've watched reactors who dismiss certain scenes like "You'll never do that!" "Impossible!" "Hah! Why is he doing that" or "No way a gen 5 will have issue locking on in that terrain" (but in this video, Paul says "hot rocks" which told me all I needed to know about why it may be plausible)... then I see an older fellow who was clearly like a Maverick in his time getting all giddy about the same scene like "Oh that one brings back memories!" "haha I remember doing that maneuver! Don't do it" Anyway, it's all interesting. Some poeple are very very by the book, some are just young to not have had to think of doing anything crazy, then you have the wild old timer who'd tell you "HELL YEAH IT'S ALL POSSIBLE BABY! I DID THAT TO SOME RUSSIANS 15 YEARS AGO"

Funnily enough my Dad used to be a RAAF Mirage III pilot when Top Gun first came out. He said it was corny and wrong then but entertaining. For Maverick he just said "Too many issue I've no idea where to start".

They're assisted by catapult, have engines at high throttle because until release they are tethered and they're taking off into the wind because the carrier will be deliberately pointed into it, reducing the ground speed necessary for sufficient lift. Plus other reasons, probably.

Let’s all remember it was a movie? Very well made with regards to the inflight shots even if the end story was somewhat similar to star wars Loved the F14 the aircraft could have had much more development and the sucker punch on the 5 gen was legendary

I can actually see his face trying to suppress laughter and knowing smiles as these scenes dramatize the fighter jet business to the over-the-top range. From technical point of view, any movie depicting fighter jet business is... ridiculous.
