Otherwise known as ALT Star mode, today we look at this important and powerful mode in the A320, what it means for us and how we can get it wrong!

I am a real world Airbus pilot with thousands of hours flying the real aircraft and thought it would be fun to have a look at the new detailed simulation of the longest baby 'bus by Toliss as well as the new MSFS a320 NEO. Hopefully you find this useful and it brings another perspective to your simulation. Any thoughts or comments are welcome!

Mornin' Captain! What a way to start a relaxing Saturday Edit: Fantastic video, love it when you get into the limitations of the aircraft, like the potential dangers of ALT* . Also love your perspective on the bus, really shows me how if you understand the operating principles of the plane, you can really appreciate some of the features and styles of implementation, rather than just not liking it because it's different. I grew up with stories about american pilots fighting their buses sometimes (stories told to the Mx guy [my dad]), because they were unfamiliar with how the aircraft would respond to certain sequences of inputs. There was always an air of incredulity that anyone would do it that way (Boeing does it like THIS), but you very clearly illustrate the clear logic in the design of the systems, and how the behavior of the aircraft follows from that logic

As always, love your content! Very informative & helpful! Has helped me get to know a lot of the MSFS 2020 Airbus A320neo's systems etc through the Xbox Series X. I was wondering if I may be able to make a request please for a video/stream of a flight from Wellington (NZWN) or Auckland (NZAA) with a landing at Queenstown (NZQN) in New Zealand? Such a beautiful but tricky approach.

So I know what 'Alt*' is and how to use it effectively, been watching the little '*' appear and disappear without actually being fully cognisant of its function......or at least I thought I did ! Apparently not....brilliant, straight forward and easy to follow 'how, why, what not to do and what to be aware of' when climbing or descending in the Airbus. Superb explanation made the process easy to understand and next time I get in a slight pickle as the Alt * symbol appears, I will know how to get myself and crew out of the mess fairly quickly. Great job as always Captain.

The new FS2CREW for the A320NX makes all those call outs and now it makes more sense on why it is recommended to do so, in order to work in tandem with the automation and thus remain engaged with the aircraft.

Very informative. I find myself from time to time using the V/S to have better control of either vertical accent or decent.. I watch a channel called Just Planes, has cockpit actions various planes. Constantly see pilots manually using V/S on decent. Especially when near airport on approach there's lot of traffic. As ATC instructs speed restriction.

its also more fun to calculator the decend VS rate via "flypad" in the FlyByWire addon and then just do that.. whilst listening to ATC complaining about staying at Cruise for.. 99% of the flight

Thanks for this tutorial. I had a recent experience of a sudden change of wind speed which resulted in exactly the same dangerous situation you show here whereby I lost over 30 knots of headwind within a split second pushing me very close to a stall near 36,000 feet. I soon discovered that because the aeroplane was in Alt* (was at about 35,700 feet climbing to 360) I couldn't put it into V/S mode so disconnected the autopilot and pushed the nose down a bit. Didn't think to press level off to recover some speed! Something I will always remember now thanks to you! :-)

Another great video that really helps you understand 'what the plane is doing!' I do have a question, and I'm not sure of it's a quick 'n' easy answer or if it's more involved, but how do you set and use the 'BARO', and what does it do?
@bluesfool1
@bluesfool1 2 жыл бұрын
Like any automated system in an airplane, it's the pilots responsibility to maintain situational awareness and constantly monitor the system to make sure the plane is doing what is expected. the AP in particular I think can get you in trouble pretty quickly if you aren't paying attention.

A bit off topic, but could you share your msfs sensitivity settings from your rudder pedals? Mine doesn't seem right lately, brakes works almost like a on/off button, so it's very hard to ride the brakes when taxing for example. Also parking is a nightmare cause the plane keeps stopping when I barely touch the brakes.

Tnks a lot for the instruction cpt! A question: on 737 i press a button called "alt int" on MCP to bypass a alt restriction. How can i do this on an a320? Context: ATC says im clear to climb to FL320 but the SID has an altitude restriction. Tnks again!

I have been wondering what this mode does for some time now; this mode has almost caused a collision between me and lets just say some very big rocks near Dalaman XD In the ToLiss. To be quite honest i think it was the constraints that were a *bit* iffy. Also, that rule of thumb is a good one; and could help avoid almost slamming into rocks. Planes+Rocks= RIP. And will help the descents with my daily flights between London Luton to Dalaman! Thank you so much for these tutorials! Means a lot to me and 48,000+ others (Congratulations to 48k well deserved captain!😉)

Looking forward to more streams with the experimental version. Possibly even more advanced approaches like RNAV. Should be doable now right?
@enriqueosuna
@enriqueosuna 2 жыл бұрын
VNAV has not been updated yet in the experimental version, so RNAV's are still not possible. I tried an RNAV yesterday and realized it does not work so I used the LNAV capability and used the FPA to complete the approach. But the LNAV is very good now. Looking forward to FBW implementing the VNAV update next.
@flighterer
@flighterer 2 жыл бұрын
@@enriqueosuna It depends on the kind of RNAV approach. Some are essentially non precision approaches so you can simply use minimum altitudes and descent down that way. All you really need for that is proper LNAV. Precision approaches however require VNAV to compute a vertical path.
@enriqueosuna
@enriqueosuna 2 жыл бұрын
@@flighterer you are right. We could use managed speed to descend at a 3 degree angle, or used the FPA feature, which I prefer because it allows me to adjust the descent angle as required. The current standard RNAV-Z approach does not work and the V/Dev is not active and we cannot fly the Brick for vertical flight path automatically.

So in the last case you showed, when you start losing energy on a go around in alt* mode, what would be the best recovery alternative? I suppose disengaging the AP, as a level off perhaps wouldn’t be the best option for a go around in a busy airspace for example… Any tips?

@320SimPilot
@320SimPilot 2 жыл бұрын
OP CLB has no minimum and sometimes it will level off almost whilst trying to maintain speed, but I think I know what you are referring to! Within 1200ft OP CLB commands 1000 FPM so that will be what happens there in the video. If we had been starting from further away it wouldn’t have, this is a behaviour I need to confirm however. That's not a silly idea....particularly if to participate you have to make a charitable donation into the Captains stream account....should be a doddle to add up how much has been given and forward to an appropriate charity......Clint Eastwood put it fairly succinctly when he described an aborted mission as a monumental Cluster F**k!! which is what is going on in Afghanistan right now....we should all be very ashamed in the West.
