Film room: What does J.J. McCarthy bring to the Vikings?

Sunday night on FOX 9 Sports Now, Vikings analyst Pete Bercich hit the film room with Jim Rich to provide some analyst on what J.J. McCarthy will bring to Minnesota.

all I know about Mccarther is when his team needed him the most, he delivered every single time. Just look at his advanced analytics. QBR under pressure, 3rd and long, yards under pressure etc.... The numbers that really matter, he's at the top of the class. Dude played 2 1/2 quarters most games, while others were throwing it all over the place in blowouts. He also didn't pad his #"s throwing a bunch of bubble screens and passes behind the line of scrimmage. The Vikings will be happy with him for years to come.

Troy Aikman wasn't asked to pass a lot in Dallas, how did that work out? Folks get too enamored with big QB numbers... A good QB does what needs to be done when it matters... Regular season stats don't win rings... Situational football does... Current Cowboys fans see it every year with Dak...

I love the dude...I watched him play and play well for three years at my alma mater, Michigan, and he's a wizard. I look forward to seeing him succeed in the NFL. I think the Vikings have a super bowl in their future.

If you think stats prove a QB is great, I can whip off 20-30 QB names that were stat monsters in college and were complete busts in the NFL. Going all the way back to the 83 draft.

I think one knock on JJ is that he sometimes throws late and flat and behind his receiver, rather than lofting it up and letting the WR run under it. But his arm strength is good, ability to run, ability to diagnose a defense, etc.

As someone who grew up in the UP, I’ve been a Packer fan and a Michigan fan my whole life. JJ going to a stacked Minnesota team bums me out so hard.

Biggest complaint is he hasn’t thrown the ball enough - average 20 times a game, but that is all he was called on to do at Michigan because of their superb run game. I’m confident Kevin will have him throwing 30+ times a game with accuracy and success.

One caveat. Harbaugh let Luck throw a lot more at Stanford than JJ at Mich in a same style pro offense. I know it is unfair to compare, apples to oranges, but why would you not let him throw more if he was that good?

The name JJ has already been taken in the Vikings Roster. McCarthy has said he goes by Jets McCarthy. GET HIS NAME RIGHT.

You have that backwards. Jefferson goes by "Jet" and McCarthy is JJ.

They drafted a guy whos main job is to hand the ball to the RB. Falcons selected injury prone Qb over JJ and that tells you how bad the vikings selection is. This guy will not be anything but another Zack Wilson.
