I always assumed the “5 minutes” was three separate things 1) Freiza under estimating (like you said) 2) A discrepancy between his perception of a minute, and namek’s perception of a minute 3) Everything slowed down for the audience

King Kai also claimed “most of the 5 minutes were up”. Either time physics work differently when talking, or King Kai couldn’t tell how much time was passing on Namek.

In the manga I read that the reason why it didn't instantly explode because Frieza was scared that the blast might hurt him too so he held back a bit.

This is actually the best explanation I think I have ever heard about the nature of "five minutes". Freeza is all about wanting to inspire fear and doubt in his opponents, and making "five minutes" out to be merely a boast to cover up his error in attempting to blow the planet up works wonderfully. Brilliant video.

Don't forget: in the frieza saga when goku is in the healing machine vegeta says it will take 1 hour to fully recover , Vegeta then sleeps for 45 minutes then at least 30 episodes later goku finally gets out the machine

2/9/2034 I was not prepared for MatPat's final episodes and Akira Toriyama's death to occur on the same week. Both Great Pioneers and Visionaires. I am so excited for Mat Pat. For someone as brilliant and creative as him, whatever comes next wont be a step backward, just a step in a different direction. Not better or worse, just different. Im so thankful for the years of great content Mat has given us. So proud of the way he has represented folks from North East Ohio over the years.

Frieza didn't know how much time it would take for the planet to explode, he just threw out some random number of minutes to put the pressure on Goku. If he really wanted to, there would've been nothing stopping him from blowing up the planet for real then and there with a second energy blast (or retreat into outer space), but he chose not to because his ego wouldn't allow it. When he made the 5-minute bluff, he still had his 100% power form to resort to to put up a better fight against Goku. He was probably banking on beating Goku with his full power form and then getting out before the planet would explode, instead of getting caught in the blast in mid-battle.

I like the DBZA explanation. Frieza doesn't know what a minute is. Why would he? He's an alien that can destroy anyone he's ever met if he wants so what he says sorta goes. It is a mad king situation, no one challenges him so he thinks he knows everything.

It's probably already been mentioned but the Tournament of Power was meant to be about 48 minutes, but it spanned a few dozen episodes in DB Super as well. Basically, how time is said to elapse in the series is obviously not equivalent to how fast or slow time would pass for us in real life.

I think it's Goku's very moral high ground that is the key to his growth in power and skill. It motivates him. You know how the saying goes "You're only truly strong when you're protecting something." It's like that but a bit more ambiguous as it's more like down to his conscience. A saiyan's strength is heavily linked to his mentality, I think. Considering Vegeta achieving super saiyan by basically being just that determined to surpass Goku.

Sound is not a constant, it travels differently in different mediums, plus Friezas not from Earth, so 5 minutes for him could be the time that he gave, plus plus DragonBall Z magic, they have to spend an episode or two with each power up.

You'd have thought frieza had come across the issue of blowing up a dense planet before and knew to overcompensate. He must have destroyed a lot by the time we get to this saga.

this theory is really funny to think about because it means Goku is such a chad that in 40+ minutes he never once tries to call Frieza's bluff or question why the planet hasn't blown up. he literally doesn't care

I should point out that Frieza's 5 minutes line does occur in the original manga in Chapter 126: The End of Namek?, so it is manga accurate information (unlike OVER 9000 which is actually OVER 8000 in the original manga & Japanese dub)! Also, Frieza was aware of the Super Saiyan God legend in addition to Super Saiyan, according to Goku's Dragon Ball Minus retconned origins which were later adapted into DBS: Broly!

Hello, a big time DBZ fan! The whole time thing with Frieza and Goku, I was told a long time ago that the Namekian time is about 30 mins every half hour so that 2½hr time is kinda accurate for that planet so that makes 2.5x the last 5 minutes.

Also frieza knew by explaining things and sort of stalling out he could for one get goku caught in the blast, two gather energy which I think he dragged out on purpose to a degree too but after just doing it and having a fresh feel for it he was able to go right back to his max he could during the gohan fight and idc if it’s filler it happened cause how it affects the fight with goku anyway.

Matt, I was rewatching Dragon Ball and in ep 24 when Krillin went against Master Roshi they spoke within the fight when it was a flash of a sec for the viewer and exampled what they did and said within that sec. Therefore in Dragonball z you can assume the same when freezer said 5 min. 5 min really went by. Now how Goku started the ship and got out of there I can not example that part. 😅

Maybe ... maybe... he was distracted from controlling his blast. As we have seen many times that they need focus to activate the blast or control its trajectory. Example- when goku planted 2 energy bombs under sea to hit frieza and also to get away from it. Like that when frieza died or defeated by goku his control over his blast was gone.

It’s just because the original Z anime had super slow pacing, having to animate a 20 minute episode for each 12 page chapter. If you read the manga it’s much more believable.
