Tried to post this yesterday but it got blocked and I tried to re-edit 3 different versions to get this up 😭 I knew you'd want him to react to the Grammys performance so I had him watch it yesterday. I'll try to have it edited before I leave for Vegas but no promises (I leave tomorrow morning) 😅. Also Jake and more members of our team filmed some fun mukbang videos and Ashley has more ATEEZ/Super Junior videos for Jeff so look forward to those!

For the record, Jeff, there are no deserts in Korea. They built this entire set-- INCLUDING the dunes-- to resemble the American Southwest. The Big Hit set designers are freaking WIZARDS. (I suspect they were just as bored and frustrated as the rest of us, not being able to use their skills as often.)

@MarinaEariel 2 жыл бұрын
To add a little extra info, the set was built on a quarry near the Incheon airport (basically an excavated mountain where the materials for the airport came from)

ok so Ed Sheeran wrote quite a bit of it - he submitted a completed song and they changed a LOT of the lyrics to fit what the message they wanted to convey. The one thing that Ed requested was that they keep the phrasing "We don't need permission to dance". The reason it's not a super hard choreo is because they wanted to include EVERYONE and encourage everyone to join in regardless of their dance level and included the sign language so those who can't hear are included as well. It would be counterintuitive to say, 'we don't need permission to dance' and provide a choreography that only a limited amount of skilled people can do. Hence, the regular, every day people included in the video just dancing around. Everyone can dance, even in a pandemic, everyone can vibe out together. That's the message. Also, the letting go of the kids' balloon is significance BUT the comedic aspect wasn't missed on the masses (poor kid! LOL). Lastly, I think that was the longest you went without pausing and I was getting worried hahahahahaha. My takeaways from your always-awesome reaction: Deal Breaker in place of Bias Wrecker because, yes, they are a deal breaker LOL. Also, "Visual hook"! I love that!

One really cool thing about this music video is the set. That's not an actual desert. They built that along with the store and it's done in such a way that each side (and the interior) are used in the video. I'm always impressed when I watch the MV because it's a really clever way to use space.

Jeff, I totally dig your honesty. Since this MV came out during the height of the pandemic, my husband and I both cried the first time we saw it. We had lost loved ones, experienced a lot of hardship... to see images of people taking off masks and dancing freely was so incredibly moving for us. Then, when we went to the concert with the same name, we cried again. I suspect they chose a Western theme with a retro flair to convey a sense of longing for the past (pre-pandemic) and freedom. Cowboys are a great symbol of independence that we didn't have during the nitty gritty of the pandemic.

same, to me the "light" video is the dream of a better world, where there is space for everybody, we stop ignoring disabled ppl and dance together... while it is a lot less complex as a song than their usual stuff, the simplicity of that promise and the fact that they understand/possibly share this yearning is what made it meaningful to me
@mollyfurball

Hahaha.... Watching Jeff being a bit confused, like... "what's the purpose of this song?" since it's so different (and less complex) than the rest of their discography. I think knowing that they attended the UN and performed this song (pre-recorded at the UN hall/complex in NY) at the UN general assembly gives more CONTEXT as to "maybe" WHY they made a song like this. The song is a more "generic" feel-good uplifting-intended song, in my opinion. While we won't know the inner workings and decision makings between them preparing a song like this vs. their UN visit w/ the S. Korean president, but... my feeling is they prepared this song w/ this specific message, as it ties to the message/goal of the UN visit. That UN thingy must have taken months to plan (Sept), and this song came out 2 months (July) before their visit, and it's so atypical of their usual stuff, so I feel it's not only just for the pandemic message, but also a part of the bigger arc of the whole UN trip planning and goal they're trying to deliver, and also nicely tied together w/ their concert theme that happened later after the UN event. (I mean, imagine performing Mic Drop at the UN? hahaha... joke...) So I think it is a good idea that Taylor had Jeff react to this video, kind of a preparation to your concert experience! :-) Ah! I just realized, it might help if the teaser to this MV was viewed first for this particular MV. The beginning shot of the newspaper front page headlines pretty much summarized the whole theme and message of the song and MV. It'll provide more context to the MV itself. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/n7KpltiD0pe6YIU.html

14:40 There were people who were angry because they thought the song & MV were saying that COVID is definitively over & restrictions can end - esp. the scenes where they cut to people removing their masks. The song was released at the beginning of July, 2021, at a point when infection rates had been dropping & even countries, like S. Korea, with very strict COVID requirements were beginning to ease them. I think BTS were portraying this newfound sense of hope + summer vibes + something a bit deeper. Namely, that even WITH strict C19 restrictions, it's still possible & necessary to find & experience joy in life, i.e. we may be under quarantine, but we don't need permission to dance. P.S. I think you'll really enjoy, "Interlude: Shadow," and, "Intro: Persona;" both the songs & the MVs. They're both Hip Hop-centric songs; the first is a dark solo by Suga & the second is a less-dark but equally resonant solo by RM. Both songs also have a bunch of interesting cinematographic techniques in the MVs.

people had very different reactions to ptd! Some had more similar reactions like Jeff, while some, and I would say actually a lot of us, got really emotional by it. I cried the first time I watched the mv, and I’ve seen several reactors crying to, but not understanding why it made them cry.. ptd really gets me quite emotional to this day, and I don’t really understand why, haha
@shiroikami2690

I also didn't really like PTD the first time I heard it, mostly because it sounded like any generic pop song out there. Like it could have been given to any artist and it would have sounded almost exactly the same (also to a lesser extent because of the extreme levels of autotuning on the rap line's voices). It was lacking something that I had already come to expect from BTS's music in the year and a half-ish that I'd been following them when the song came out (I'm an ON-era ARMY). Over time I've come to like it more, although I vastly prefer their live versions of it to the studio version. Fun fact: In the crew choreography part at the end of the MV, the person at the center back of the group wearing the yellow shirt is Son Seung-duk, their director of choreography.

Taylor cam was a great addition! I definitely enjoyed this song the more I listened to the song and paid attention to the lyrics. (Sometimes I don’t really pay attention when it’s in English) I think in some ways it’s a snapshot in time of how we were all feeling last summer, wanting to see our lives get back to normal. I was moved by a few reactors who got emotional watching for the first time. For me, I also like the message of resilience and pushing through when there are obstacles, no matter what they are, and still managing to do it with joy. Hope you have a great time at the concert!

How do you equate singing in another language to somehow losing their Korean roots? That is incredibly disrespectful, you would not say the same about their Japanese discography would you? They have openly spoken about the racism they have faced, hearing people criticize them both for not speaking English and for speaking English. This is a very bad take.
@lauriemontijo
@lauriemontijo 2 жыл бұрын
I didn’t say that they would lose their Korean roots. I was saying I wanted people new to them to see how absolutely amazing some of their past videos and song and choreography. I was hoping people would not think that PTD was the extent of their gifts and talents and.., I have no idea how you got the idea what I said had anything to do with their Korean roots. Talk about disrespectful. Apparently, you have have an issue or you would not have taken my comments so out of context. Be well.

@@lauriemontijo You are the one saying that singing in English would some how be the equivalent of "lose[ing] their start to attract more fans." Maybe you should reevaluate what you say before saying it, especially as a non-Korean. Singing in another language has nothing to do with who they are or how they create their art. The problem lies with you, do some self-reflection.

I’m old and grew up buying 45 rpm singles that had the heavily promoted “hit” on one side and something nobody expected to do well on the B side. For me Butter is the single and Permission to Dance is the B side. BTS didn’t have ambitious plans for this song. It was just for fun. They were surprised at its success.

i recognized the sign language the first time i watched the MV and started crying right away. V, in particular, has used signing before but i think it was the whole group that decided to use it here. they even had a hearing aid in their twitter bio for a bit. part of the message was that even though the world was in lockdown, we could still dance, wherever we are. their 3 english songs were made to bring comfort to their fans since that's all they felt they could do for us.

Jeff, be advised - the first time I heard this song I HATED it - my heart sank! Now, after hearing - and singing - it many times, I love it. I think it is crucial to remember the time and circumstances under which it was made - both as a song and the MV. Lockdown had continued for 18 months and there was little indication things would change. Like their other English songs, BTS chose NOT to go dark, but instead to keep things light to raise spirits which everywhere (including in their own house) were struggling. Yes, this song anticipates the defeat of Corona virus - still only partially achieved, even now. In addition, Yes, the dance was deliberately simple and easy to achieve - because they wanted people to join in. They actually invited people to post videos of them dancing with the MV, in the PTD challenge, and many did. It took a loooong time for me to "get it" too, so don't feel bad about lagging behind. BUT perhaps be a little bit more patient and trusting of BTS - they always have a reason, and that reason is probably deeper than you will find with any other artist. I probably prefer the deeper meanings in their Korean work too but have come to love these songs as well.

Yes, honesty! Thank you! Not a fan either but it's actually a great song to end concerts lmaoo It's so different from their usual style exactly for the same reason Dynamite and Butter has: COVID. The extremely used genre, really simple and non-deep message, easy choreography, english... all it's so the good vibes during such awful global times reach easly to everyone. Don't worry about cathing up! I haven been an ARMY since 2017 and I haven't catched up either... Have fun in the concert!

To me, PTD was more of a message of hope, carrying on, being free. I loved the BTS You Tube shorts movement they did, people from all over the world participated in it. They also used some of those submissions and made one combo video in the end. So touching💜@Jeff if you see the masks of actors were on then off toward the end. Also love the sign language they incorporated (you should also watch the United Nations performance of PTD). Also there are some small hidden Easter eggs in the background of some of the scenes, i.e. the truck JK is standing on, the large poster behind Jin and JHope, signage on the storefronts, the sign next to J-Hope, etc. (you’d need to freeze frame them to check out). This totally sounds like an Ed Sheeran written song too. It’s funny, they hadn’t even met in person yet and this was the 2nd song written by him for BTS. This is just a feel good song 🎤🎶🎵🎤🎧

I'm not a huge fan of this song or this video. BUT. When I first watched it, I was first cynically grumpy when it featured people wearing masks. Keep in mind when this came out, and that whole world it seemed was masked. I thought this was kind of a "let's pretend everything is fine even though" vibe, and I was not having it. But then I found myself crying when the people in the video took their masks off--I cried again when I watched it just now in your reaction! It was a kind of happy reminder of what the world will be again--you could say it was envisioning a future when the pandemic response is over--but it was so well done that it was also a subtle rebellion against masking off people's faces. It was reclaiming humanness. It was focusing on people's faces, and joy, and bringing people together in the visuals, instead of separating them, like the world has been insisting upon for the past 2 years. I thought it was very well written and executed, because no matter where you fall on the whole mask spectrum you could find this video a happy place. So by the end I found the video cathartic. (advanced degree in Film Studies means I over-analyze everything, but this one wasn't about analysis, it was about feels. And this video, even though it still is not nearly my favorite, really hit me.

I think they were going for a 60/70/80’s feel with the aesthetic of the video. If you see Dynamite and Butter which came before PTD they both go along those lines with different palette colors but kind of making a continuation of the theme

Just an FYI, the MV is full of symbolism. Some are insider knowledge between ARMY and BTS, others are more general regarding the message of this song, and the overall intention behind the trilogy of English language songs they've released during the pandemic.

I really like Jeff's analogy here..its not that the music is not great, it just might cater more to a different audience. Still it doesn't reduce BTS's relevance..but I just want to say thank you for doing reactions to them and for being truthful on ur comments..great job taylor..i became a fan of ur channel because of ur great content..keep it up..btw nice shirt Jeff 🥰

You don't need permission to dance. There was even a Permission To Dance challenge before and a lot of of people from all over the world even the elderly joined the challenge including the famous Jabbawockeez & Elton John. This song was written by Ed Sheeran and gifted it to BTS.

Taylor, awesome job! I've really enjoyed your documentation of their (Jeff and Olive) journey down the rabbit hole.😁 Looking forward to the Grammy performance reaction(s). Jeff there is nothing wrong with enjoying the BTS songs with more depth and meaning. Honestly it is the reason most ARMY are drawn to the guys, they have a way of creating great music with greater meaning.😊 Journey on... 💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜

I like how you break down and explain everything. You shouldn't have to explain yourself and shouldn't be getting rude comments about anything you do. Maybe put a little description in your description area that you break down the process of filming, lighting, etc for new people coming across your information area that stays on there for when you continue to experience they're great talent. I enjoy watching you experience it.

The "poppy" mass appeal of this song was very intentional, I think. This was a fun, encouraging song for the masses. Normally, I wouldn't have vibed with this style, but it was released back when ee thought the vaccine would put an end to restrictions, so this was supposed to be a celebration of that coming soon. Unfortunately, that didn't happen, so it loses some of its impact. Watching the teaser would clarify some of the imagery. I actually cried when I saw this, because it was so hopeful, and we all needed that. The line "when we fall ee know how to land" is a theme that has been touched on a lot over the years, especially by Yoongi (Suga). That's a message the world needs to hear.
