"I wish I knew what that said" - it basically says Daechwita written in Chinese characters. Chinese characters were used for the Korean language before the Korean alphabet was invented. The three characters literally translate to "big," "blow," and "hit" - referring to the royal marching band procession and instruments used in daechwita.
@Taylormari

Thank you for this 😂 the whole time I just assumed it was Daechwita but then when he asked and I looked at the characters closely I was so confused as to why the characters didn’t match the ones in the title. This makes a lot more sense 😅

The music at the beginning and sampled throughout actually *is* Daechwita. It’s traditional ceremonial, military music often used to announce the presence of the king. I think it translates to ‘great hitting and blowing’. Yoongi/Agust D is playing two aspects of himself. The mad king (also called Anger) is himself from the time of his first mixtape ‘Agust D’ released in 2016, and the rebel commoner is himself now (well, in 2020). There are six others in his ‘gang’, representing the other members of BTS, and the young woman who presents him with the car keys embodies ARMY. The revolver he uses at the end is a Colt ARMY revolver from 1860. He has suggested that maybe he didn’t actually ‘kill’ his former self, at least not completely. Yoongi’s three named personas (Min Yoongi, Suga and Agust D) are distinguishable from one another as well as being aspects of the same personality. There’s also a huge amount of cultural and historical reference which is best left to the explanation videos.

Regarding being related to an empress - please understand that when they talk about Yoongi (i.e. the Min clan) being related to the empress, we're talking over 100,000 people who are "related" to her. He is not a direct descendant or something. This is something I see repeated by international ARMY a lot and it makes me cringe. Basically EVERY Korean person has a story of being distantly related to royalty like that, because that is literally HOW the last names were derived. There are only 280 last names in Korea, and they essentially all come from clans with royal members like that. On top of that, many Koreans are actually NOT related to the figures they share a last name with, because when last names became required, people adopted names even if they weren't ACTUALLY related to said figure. Foreigners don't seem to understand this is something Koreans mostly joke about regarding being related to royalty and act like it's some amazing thing. It's...really not. 😂
@Mark-vj7zd
@Mark-vj7zd 2 жыл бұрын
My understanding is that Yoongi himself confirmed the connection and I did qualify it as ‘distant’, which would be true of any members of the Yeoheung Min. I’ve deleted the reference anyway.

The car is actually old, it's Hyundai first model of Grandeur Azura, 1986 era. (A Korean friend told me). It was a popular luxury car in Korea at the time, it was only sold in Korea and it symbolized your social status. 😊 I am enjoying your reactions, I love film as much as music so your feedback is interesting. The characters that popped up on screen are the Chinese characters for “daechwita” (Chinese characters were used in that era). 大 = dae = big/great/grand 吹 = chwi = to blow/blowing 打 = ta = to hit/hitting So “daechwita” literally means “great hitting and blowing” and refers to a genre of traditional military processional music using wind and percussion instruments. The scroll is revealed at the same time as the line about Bang PD dancing, the CEO of BigHit. On the scroll is a simple caricature of Bang PD, first drawn by JK in an episode of Run BTS (their own variety show). There was a Pictionary style game where they had to depict their CEO, and JK did so by drawing eyes and nose. Below this caricature is the Chinese character for dance 舞.

He was spot on about the duality. Yoongi never talked about this mv being a series, but he did mention in the behind story that the second mixtape is somewhat a continuation of his first one. He also mentioned that the characters he portrayed in this mv is himself; the blonde king is his persona from the first mixtape while the black haired one is his current persona. so the final scene is a portrayal of him embracing the person he is today while eliminating his old self. idk if I explain that right but I think the behind the scene and some of the explanation videos made out there can tell you more about it.

One of my absolute favorite MVs and songs. Musically it is one of the most interesting songs and how he blended modern rap with the classical Korean instruments for Daechwita is genius and the mixing engineer labeled it yeh most difficult song he ever mixed with over 100 tracks (not unusual for anything BTS). What is next level is that he didn’t just write the rap he did it all including the concept and idea for the MV which he self financed. It’s almost accidental they got to use this location which is usually booked years in advance for Korean dramas etc but due to Covid a lot got disrupted and they got a 2 day filming window. This is all for a mixtape he released with no promo before or after for free, but did have option for digital sales and he broke ton of records as the top selling Korean solo artist again with no promo radio play etc. The idea of killing the inner mad/greedy/angry king that has been out beheading his haters and becoming his inner rebel/man of the people backed by BTS and Army plus all the historical references he put all over makes this just layers and layers of meanings. He used to be blind angry AgustD and he wants to be a rebel. One of the most well realized pieces of art and why he gets to refer to himself as “Min Yoongi - genius”.

He was involved in all aspects of this song and music video and had great input into how the music video was designed/produced (working as usual with Director Lumpens (Choi YongSeok) who does most BTS MVs) - Yoongi wrote, produced, composed the song, he conceptualised the MV and had creative control, all in his "spare" time for his fans as part of his second mix tape (D-2) that he gave to ARMY for free on soundcloud... He performed it live with the rest of BTS at last years Festa kzfaq.info/get/bejne/f9eEpqWnqL-meWQ.html MV Shooting Sketch - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/gb2CfZt0uqjXiH0.html and D-2 Album interview - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/p7Kna8p91syUknk.html I'm not sure how much you know about YoonGi/Suga/AugstD....but as you liked his MV then the following info might be of interest to you. BTS stage name SuGa comes from a play on the words of his basketball team position - Shooting Guard (he was a good basketball player before he joined BTS). His alterego Rap name AgustD is his birthplace (Daegu Town - DT) and stage name (SUGA) backwards. SUGA started as an underground rapper under the name “Gloss”, a play on his given Korean name, YoonGi, which means “to shine”. He is a respected producer in Korea currently and had won awards for his producing of other artists songs. He joined Big Hit as a producer and was convinced to join BTS as he was told he wouldn't have to dance. Video Fun facts - 1. the executioner/the butcher at the beginning - is the director of lighting 2. the two guys who started fighting behind AgustD in the beginning as he walked through the market were Jin and JK who turned up on set to support YoonGi while he was filming and decided to join in the fun 3. YoonGi learnt that sword dance in 2 days - never having danced with a sword before!! 4. The gun used was a Colt M 1860 ARMY 5. They were going to use a really expensive modern car but it wouldn't drift so then they went with the old car that was really flash when YoonGi was young Daechwita is Traditional Joseon Korean Royal Parade/Military Music - notifying all that the king is here - Fun Fact: Yoongi(Suga) is a member of the clan of the very last empress of Korea. Slight correction, he's from the same clan as the last empress of Korea, who was born into the Yeonhueng Min clan. She married into the royal family but had no children bc the last emperor was infertile (speculated due to poisoning). But in any case, Yoongi's not part of the royal family clan (which was the Jeonju Yi clan) bc he's a Min and not a Yi/Li.

Loved the reaction! No need to keep apologising for the pausing! The text at the beginning is Daechwita written in Hanja which is an older form of written Korean that used Chinese characters. Daechwita roughly translates into "big blowing and hitting"(likely referring to the instruments used). Taylor was right about what Daechwita is. Agust D rearranged that music and incorporated some if it into this song. Speaking of Hanja, during the lyrics about Bang PD dancing because they keep making so much money, they showed the scroll with the Bang PD illustration on it but right under the nose is the word, "dance" in Hanja. Putting the word right where his mouth is always made me wonder if it was referencing how Bang PD went back on his word to Yoongi about dancing. 😂 Their company used to be Big Hit Entertainment but it expanded to include things other than just music so it was rebranded as HYBE and restructured so that there's a label called Bighit Music where Lee Hyun, BTS and TXT still reside from pre-HYBE times. They also bought up other labels which operate independently under HYBE. Ithaca Holdings was bought during this too and falls under the HYBE America branch. I believe there's also a HYBE Japan branch.

The melody sounding at the very beginning is Daechwita, it is a genre of korean traditional music that born close to the end of Joseon dinasty. Someone told me that it was played at Korean Palaces and everytime the king goes out or march to other places, like an announcement that the king is coming.

22:28 Blood Sweat and Tears, when I listened to it on the album, didn't have the excerpt from Demian, and I was kinda grateful ngl. I think that when it comes to BTS, each version of a song they make has a place and purpose. The video is designed to tell a story, the album is designed to be the soundtrack to that story. So honestly, I've never noticed an annoyance because my experience with BTS has made it so that my interest is kept and the distinction between the two versions is clear. Wow, you opened my eyes on that one. Kudos to you I didn't even notice that BTS did that to me.

Yoongi said that shot you mentioned when the dark-haired Yoongi lifts his head from under the "hat" was his favorite photo of the mv. It is beautiful. Yoongi wanted to use a couple different cars but the director settled on this one because the others could be made to drift properly. Big Hit was the original small company that signed BTS. In 2021 it renamed itself HYBE in order to rebrand itself and expand its reach. There are several interviews with Yoongi about the making of Daechwita that are very informative. The executioner was one of the butchers you saw earlier on the street.

Daechwita is basically like a fanfare - the music that plays to announce the arrival of royalty so "Daechwita, play it louder" (the king is coming) also Bang PD is more like their boss/CEO not just their producer :) and yeah crazy king Agust D steps on the people, new Agust D the new king is one with the people. They kind of reflect the Agust D from the first album vs the second and kind of his growth as a person as well.

Just some tidbits ..... Daechwita” music video was filmed in a famous and well-preserved historically-themed location called the Dae Jang Geum Park. It was built to showcase how South Korea used to live in the past. It's pretty immersive since you can wear South Korea's traditional clothing (aka the Hanbok). This site is often used for period pieces for kdramas & kpop MV's.... The car is the first model of the Hyundai Grandeur Azera, manufactured from 1986 to 1992. BTS is a brand ambassador for Hyundai. Bang Si-Hyuk (Hitman Bang) is drawn in the pic... he started BTS and BigHit label... Near the beginning Suga acknowledged the butcher who is also the executioner.... in Silla & Josean eras the butcher often served as the executioner for the King... the look between Suga and him kind of indicates the plan they had for him not to behead Suga, so Suga could "overthrough" the Mad King... In the end the gun used is a In a homage to Army, the gun used was a Colt m1860 ARMY 44-single action revolver manufactured and used during the American civil war.

Little did I know where it would lead. I’ll be forever grateful to whatever algo caused YT to recommend this to me. I enjoyed your analysis, thanks for doing it.

The Chinese characters that appear at the beginning of the MV are the Chinese characters for Daechwita. (大吹打). The first characher "dae" 大 means big, the second character "chwi" 吹 means to blow and the last character "ta" 打 means to hit. Dechwita is actually a piece of Korean traditional music performed by wind and percussion instruments and it is basically a march. You can hear the beginning of the march in the intro of the MV where Suga is seen going out of the throne room. Also, the "Explained by a Korean" series are very helpful, especially to get some more info on the specific Korean elements.

He is knowledgeable and always shares bits and pieces of advice especially when it comes to cinematography. Looking forward to your next reaction. 💜

Actually, you're right. Yoongi have said this before in a interview that he plays both parts and both characters represents him, the old self (the king) and the present self or the new self of him.

What's interesting is throughout the video/song, there's only one beat throughout! ♡ yoongi's way of changing his rap speed and tone of voice is what makes the song interesting (besides the visuals and lyrics ofc) ☻

Big Hit Entertainment is BTS’ label (company/agency) and Bang PD was the CEO who is also a producer. He created and invested effort/money/time into BTS and it’s members when they were just a very small agency. Fast forward, as BTS success was rising into the stratosphere, the company was growing along with them in their innovation and investments, and then finally became an all encompassing company called HYBE which have acquired labels and companies under it including Ithaca Holdings which manages artists such as Justin Bieber, Ariana Grande, etc. They’re no longer called Big Hit Entertainment, but there is now Big Hit Music which BTS and a few acts fall under it. From what I read, Bang PD (HYBE) made Big Hit Music as a separate entity, even though BHM are owned by HYBE. I remember being relieved when I heard this, because I didn’t want new company higher ups/powers that joined HYBE to fiddle or mess with what BTS has going on and had established.

Soooo About the car it is classic Hyundai, classic as older car, it was first model that come out for public sale that was symbol of "luxury", it was like in 80s in Korea and if someone got this car that was like symbol of status then, so it is in some why a little not to modern history but little nod to korean brand history in a way, like he come in car that is old for now but at his prime it was for general public but was highend. I don't know if I explained it good... Like Mercedes or BMW in another places in teory everyone can buy it but when you see someone have it, it is like "oh wow". (actually Hyundai tweeted about it when they saw MV bc there are ARMYs in company ;) ) With the man that was to execiute Suga, He is a butcher at the begining and he also kills people for king and his advisors and etc, bc work with meat was important, someobe have to do it but it was very bad look on job, they didn't have good live, like people thought this was "dirty" job and look down, bc they were around death all time and this was bad omen, but that is why they also took job as executors bc they have nothing to loss, people were going to look bad at them regardless so why no to take more jobs and maybe have a little better life for themself - something like that. Hmm bc It was obviulos hard job like mentaly they were drinking before. That is why guy drink and split alcohol when Suga is on his knees waiting for death, it was death dance the guys were drinking to blank themself and they were spliting some of it to make evil go, so dark powers/souls/spirits didn't stay with them bc of their job - killing. I think if there some more info to tell that is not in making of video. Or explenation videos. Hmm Ohhh about Bang PD image on scroll it is Bang PD like he also say in lyrics and it is inspired by JK drowing, but to add info the lips part is actually symbol for dance in korean so it is like literally line from song he rap that Bang PD is dancing bc everything is great and they show this scroll that has his face and lips saing "dance". It is soo well thought. For fun fact the gun he pull out is called ARMY it is colt if I remember correctly, and it is all accurate time wise, like the last years of Josen dynasty (Suga is wearing their symbols and palace was from that time, we know bc of symbols in buldings and painting behind trone) and this gun production match, so it is history wise accurate.

Hybe basically has two parts hybe in America where they bought the itchaca holdings and the main branch is in Korea, hybe is a public organisation. Basically hybe is the expand bighit. But after rebranding bighit was under hybe Korea, and bighit music is not public label. It was directly own by Bang pd and the boys. Only TXT and BTS are under bighit music and simply no one can touch TXT or BTS because it's not a public label like hybe. Hybe has various labels like piedles and ect... hybe was also owned by Bang pd. Correct me if I'm wrong. I have very little knowledge when it comes to business and organisations and sorry for my English too ! And also as far as I know deachwita is some kinf of instrument they used in josan dynasty to announce the appearance of the king. I'm not a korean so you better watch an explanation video for this. I recommend DKDTV one. This song is a pure master piece. If you noticed this song only has one beat going through the whole song and it's only Yoongi's rapping flow changing. When you noticed it you'll blow your mind. It still gives me goosebumps when thinking how genius this man is. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/gMepeNee3r66oKM.html here's the explanation

Just one small correction, BigHit is a public company. When it went public, Bang PD and all BTS members received stock. They are the majority stockholders of BigHit and that means they own it. The money they made selling the rest of the stock was used to buy all the other companies and form HYBE.

I am so glad you saw this. I knew you would totally nerd out on it. PDBang is the ceo and boss of Big Hits. He created the label and is responsible for creating BTS. He just stepped down from HYBE to go back to creative directing with Big Hits. On another note, because you like rap you should check out not only more of Agust D but also some RM solos. The first that comes to mind is Do You for the stripped down nature of that recording and video. Then Joke. The video is as disturbing as the song. For the entire group I would love your take on Idol.

One historical thing in this is that during the Josean era the king/emperor would behead his enemies and keep their heads in a box so their body had to be buried without it. This was a way of not letting his enemies “rest in peace” and brought shame upon the family of the “traitor.” Suga is actually a direct descendant of the last Empress of Korea! Also, if you look closely, the two guys that get in a fight in the marketplace are Jin and Jungkook!

You see there is a difference between people that pause to add actual useful information and to comment on what is going on rather than people that pause every 20 seconds so that youtube can't copyright strike or something (I don't know how it works). Also, love that you rewatched to read the lyrics I would rather have you watch 2 or 3 times so that you can get all the elements rather than trying to watch everything in just one listen.

Daechwita is the traditional music played to announce the king or for the army to march to. Bighit was the original company of Bang Si Hyuk, when they got so rich I am not clear if he set up Hybe or bought into Hybe. Interesting note: you'll notice that Yoongi the Mad King is always in his palace alone while his advisors are outside. This could be an allegory to Emperor Qin Shi Huang (the tyrannical ruler who unified China) who was allegedly so paranoid that he slept in a different room every single night and didn't allow people within 100 yards of him. You are right, at the very beginning 0:18, those are dead bodies covered with straw mats with their heads placed next to them. More heads hanging from poles 1:54. Here 1:57 more heads in boxes.
