I was surprised that LeVar didn't offer an anecdote about Hawkings's appearance on TNG, but since he seemed pretty nervous for his first try, I understand him not (yet) channeling Alex's personal commentary.

Reminder: the things one has to do to qualify for Jeopardy are HARD. Patrick is as smart as anyone who takes the test, he just had some unfortunate slip-ups. Just the fact that he made it on should be achievement enough.

@@NickTheEnlightened exactly. What makes me more frustrated is how inconsistent the audience is in terms of response to horribly low scores. Sometimes they reach out with loads of support, other times they say that the person’s I.Q. is as low as their consolation prize. (Okay, I obviously made that up, but that should give you an idea.) At least Patrick wasn’t treated like Marge Simpson by the host and producers. (If you know, you know, if you don’t, well, I’ll let you find it.)

I did too. But I hope he's going to do well. His Twitter Fiasco about him saying "I should get the host of Jeopardy job because everyone on the Internet thinks I should" before he even Hosted His First Episode did not win me over. It took Alex at least a year, so that line he took was enough to call out on .

I think Burton should be the official Jeopardy host. He is so nice to everyone and has the most kind of hart and cares about everyone else than himself. Puts children and learning at the forefront of anything else. He is a great man.

Unpopular opinion: I found Levar a bit awkward on this first episode, but it's only show #1, I think nerves got to him and he himself said in interviews he realized after talking to his wife he was trying too hard to be Alex on show 1 and he took a different approach from there on, so let's see what happens on show 2 tomorrow. I still see him as a frontrunner for permanent replacement.

Yeah, he definitely had the jitters going in on this episode and I can't blame him. He was trying to be someone that he was not, and since he realized that (thanks to his wife) the next episode, we should see a totally different approach from Levar. I can't wait to see it!! He still has my vote!!

Not so unpopular, his wife basically said the same thing. He asked her how she thinks he did after he shot the first episode and she was like ehh. He knows it was a little weird and he said it took some time to get used to.

How is that unpopular? It's obvious. This video shows him to be a little awkward. I'm cutting him slack like I did everyone else since, unlike some people, I don't expect someone to hit a home run on the first pitch. I'm hopeful that he improves as his episodes go on, like most of the others did. Mrs. Burton had to have helped even though there are only 15 minutes between episodes. It's fortunate she got to be there. I still think Jennings is the frontrunner but LeVar is #2 and Cohen #3. Rodgers suddenly returning to the Packers after all his Prima Donna drama may have something to do with him getting a "no" from Sony.

Not only is Stephen Hawking interred next to Sir Isaac Newton, but both Newton and Hawking were, in their day, the Lucasian Chair of Mathematics at Cambridge.

LeVar Burton was amazing! His voice is smooth and not to mention he's one of the more sharply-dressed hosts of the group. There have been other actors/comedians to do game shows. But LeVar emits a feeling of respect to the show and its history. I'm for LeVar for the new host!

DANG!!! Devastating loss for Patrick at -$7,400. That’s probably the new negative record. Matt & Kathleen we’re pretty fast on the signaling devices. If Alex Trebek was still here to see this, he probably would’ve been devastated.

not adjusting for doubled scores, yes. adjusting for doubled scores, the pre-doubled -$10,200 set by joan kantor in the first season is still the technical record. watching this still hurts on patrick’s behalf, since he clearly came prepared - he was actually above average on the signaling device, at 33.96% first on buzzer (for comparison, kathleen’s was 20.75%) - but he was just too nervous to get any momentum, and facing who would go on to become a 38-day champion didn’t help either. i really hope he’s invited back for the second chance tournament.

Anyone else feel like Jeopardy has been getting easier over the years? I watched some old episodes from the 90s not too long ago and it was damn near impossible for me.

I don't think it's been getting easier over the years, just that older episodes rely on outdated info. Partially because Jeopardy keeps with the times, and relies somewhat on pop culture. As such, clues from a decade or more ago are obscure or obsolete in the modern conscience, and therefore seem more "difficult".

I think Betty White should have her chance as guest host like Alex wanted. 😉 Missed Levar's show due to watching the Olympics. So far I pick Sanjay Gupta. I rather enjoy revolving hosts. Would love to hear James Earl Jones read the clues! Lol No.matter who is chosen as host I will still watch Jeopardy every night (sans Olympics broadcast nights) as I have for years. RIP Stephen Hawking.

I think LaVar did very well. I just think the clues needed to be read a little faster. The contestants seemed to drag as well. The show moved too slowly. Obviously when all the clues aren't read because time runs out, there's potential money that's not earned. I still enjoyed watching. Good job, Mr. Burton 👏

It’s so funny how many people in the comment section of Jeopardy videos wish that someone was around them to see them get the right answer and so they casually mention in a really believable way that they answered correctly to themselves like we know them or care. But that is the quintessential Jeopardy viewer: Someone with slightly above average intelligence and slightly below average levels of self-confidence.

Maybe he’ll improve but I was not impressed. I don’t understand all the cheerleading for him. Right now I still want either Ken Jennings or Mayim Bialik. She did far better than Burton from the get go, as did most of the others.

It removes one part of the clutter from his brain so that way he can focus solely on figuring out the answer instead of trying to supply the correct phrasing. And considering he’s outlasted all but five contestants, it’s working pretty well.

This might be just me, but I wouldn't mind if Jeopardy kept rotating the hosts instead of finding a permanent replacement.

He almost even sounded like Alex, but he said on GMA this first night he wasn't himself, so I am excited to see him tomorrow if I can find a way to watch. I also signed the petition. Get this right, Jeopardy

You could hear the nervousness in his voice. His nerves were probably jangling. But I have no doubt he'll get better. He's still very polished and he's been hosting for decades. He can do this. He's my pick for permanent host...and I'm glad he's open in his desire to actually want it. It's down to him and Mayim Bialik honestly. No one else is close in my mind. Mike Richards is, but he's producer so he's out. So it's down to them.
