I read/processed the clue last night as 700 because I was tired. Perhaps they weren't laser-focused for similar reasons (nerves, maybe?). It's obviously farther than Wellington, but I could see something like Nuku'alofa being a good guess. The Pacific is HUGE. At the very least, I knew Queensland as a state, not a capital like Sydney, NSW or Santiago de Chile. Yes, I know the national capital of Australia is Canberra and that Sydney is just a state capital. I can easily name all 197 countries and their capitals because I Sporcle way too much.

The first one also missed "capital city".

As a kid I learned all the U.S. states and their capitals from playing a game on my Atari 400 and that just wanted to make me learn all the provinces and territories of Canada and their capitals then all the other countries and their capitals. I liked drawing maps too, from memory and then compare my drawing to actual maps and see where I was wrong and next time do better. Then I got into making up my own maps of fictional worlds. I'm also a sucker for whenever I see an interesting map in a fantasy book. It makes me more inclined to buy it because even if I end up not liking the story I can still enjoy reading the maps. It was the map in A Game Of Thrones that tipped the balance in deciding to buy the book and then get into the story long before the HBO series.get I remember when a Jeopardy champion could only win a maximum of 5 times. For a while there a five time champion would also get a brand new car as a bonus in addition to their prize money. I remember back in the day there were other game shows that didn't limit the times someone could win. Wheel of Fortune used to do returning champions. Hollywood Squares, Press Your Luck, and Tic Tac Doe are other game shows that come to mind that had unlimited returning champions either at certain times or during their entire runs.we That is great you got to be on game shows! I have to disagree, especially with the guy in second place. Just a small amount of thinking about how far 7000 miles is gets you across the Pacific Ocean, not to New Zealand. It had to be in South America, and Chile is the only country that far down the continent. Remember, the winner was under the same pressure and he got it right. He bet conservatively because he was probably a bit shaky on the category, but he still got it right.

From the rockies to the pacific is Western Australia, rockies to the Mississippi River is South Australia and the Northern Territory, and from the Mississippi to the Atlantic is Queensland, New South Wales, and Victoria.

Lima was a good guess, but I felt it was too far north for the clue. When it mention that the city was also on the Pacific coast, then I had the feeling it was Santiago.

@@hsupower The clue said "near" the Pacific, not "on." Lima is on the coast; Santiago is inland to some extent. The legislative capital of Chile, Valparaíso, *is* on the coast. Also, Lima is in the middle of the tropics and thus too far north.

@@ericgittleman4324 you are right on the near part on the clue. My thought process was thinking on where Sydney is in the world. Then, go across the Pacific and see what country would be on a straight line. Peru is too far north. I thought Chile would be the target.

I thought Honolulu at first, and then eliminated that because of the difference in Latitude. West Coast of South America was my next best guess, and the furthest south capital is in Chile.

I think Peru is land-locked, i.e., not bordered by any ocean, much less the Pacific, the grandaddy of them all.

I went West and in kms and then realised I was nowhere near the Pacific.

Presumably they were vastly underestimating the circumference at that latitude and thought it was trick question, asking them to go east all the way back to Oceania.
