When I first saw this, it was the moment it debuted on MTV. And I don’t think young people now can truly appreciate what Jackson mania was like. I was waiting for you to react to this one! 😍 I was a teenager when it first came out (1995, if I'm remembering correctly so I was about 15) and it debuted at #1 and could be heard everywhere for a LONG time afterwards. I still love it even though I remember having so much trouble understanding what they were saying until I got hold of the lyrics, lol. Unfortunately, this is the only time they had a song together (unless you want to count "We Are The World" but Janet was almost hiding during that song despite being in the front row along with two of her other brothers and was lost among the legendary artists of the time). If I'm remembering correctly, Janet never wanted to be seen as riding her brothers fame so didn't want to directly work with him. However, there were some insane allegations at that time that they were actually the same person given that they looked and sounded very similar. (Who'd have guessed that could happen, right? They're only brother and sister. No reason for them to look and sound similar. None at all. 😒) Anyway, given their fame and schedules at the time, since the mid 90's was a period when they were both incredibly huge at the same time (not to be confused with mostly huge as they were the rest of the time,) it would seem logical that that was why they were never seen together. Of course, the term "common sense" has always been nonsensical to me since it's actually not very common at all. Also, the world seemed generally insane at the time with a cop shooting an unarmed young black man amongst other horrible things the news was reporting (which was mentioned in the soft part Janet sung but the video you watched was actually the shorter version where a part was cut.) So this song was basically their way of proving to the world that, YES, they are two very separate people and/but they're both so disgusted with the state of the world in general that they wanted to SCREAM about it. ...They also apparently figured they should go all out on it since it was the most expensive music video ever produced at that time and probably still is (though I haven't checked to be sure.)

So... there was almost NO CHOREOGRAPHY in this video. They found out at the last minute that the director didn't do choreographed videos. He did artistic, editorial videos with cutting edge technology (this was CUTTING EDGE in 1995. MJ was the first to use all the new tech!!). So they called in Tina Landon (who did many Janet videos) at the LAST MINUTE to put that short piece together. She came in day of shooting to create that choreography.

There was the buzz, and then we saw that they were finally going to do a song together. I was so excited because by this time, they were each huge stars in their own right, but the press was just hitting them both, Michael even worse. I think this came around the time when the molestation charges were ramping up for Michael. This video was a statement and it was great. I will say that this video has stood up, and it's been 20 years (?). This was their only collaboration and I remember Janet saying their schedules were so busy that this was the only time it could happen. We were lucky they found the time to create this.

Still one of the most expensive videos ever made. I was 13 when it came out and I was an MJ fan. I’d never heard much from Janet at that point but since then I have become a fan of hers. Such talented people and definitely one of my favourite songs by both.

Yeh like some have said, this was a joint rebellion song, when both were saying just give us a break from the non stop intrusion into their lives and the crap in the media. Michael's solo equivalents were Leave Me Alone and Man in the Mirror, his way of saying, give him a break and stop the lies. They were both huge at this time.

This was and I believe still is the most expensive music video ever made... I think it was like $7 million. The media was driving him crazy and there was talk that Michael and Janet were the same person so they made it a point to be seen at the same time at a music award event and of course doing a video was an added touch.
