Fantastic idea. That tree image is very cool, dramatic and I’m very sure once it’s been printed out and framed it will stun the person looking at it. Work of art my friend.

Thanks Paul, I definitely plan to print it, the screen is not the performance for this one. Hope you and the fam are keeping well mate, hopefully get out on a shoot together later this year.

I have always enjoyed a bit of strobist photography and combining that with the landscape looks like great fun, enjoyed watching your process and the resulting images were really good. Especially at 7:40 the tree with the cool and warm tones of the sky really stands out, loved that one!

Thanks Lee. The funny thing about that last shot I put up is that the warm tones are all there because of light pollution. That's Sheffield glowing over the hill, bit of haze from the rain really made that work nicely. I'm a bit like you, I love a bit of strobing and light painting, so thought it'd be cool to start to combine with landscape.

There’s a bit of a night time theme developing here Dave with your last two films ! I tried this with a phone box on the Isle of Lewis with both red and white light - just as you did , I had a great time creating the resultant composite. I also created a day to night image down at Bedruthan Steps in a similar vein. All bloody good fun - loved the final tree images and well worth the effort Dave 👍🏻👍🏻

Thanks mate, yep it was bloody good fun. Definitely nice to challenge oneself to try these things. I'm really limited at the moment on days I can get out to film due to various different reasons so after dark it is for the moment, again though, makes for a nice change. You'll have to show me those shots next time we can get a catch up in the diary.

Really interesting technique, Dave. It's not something that I'd ever think about (apart from not having the gear), but it was like light painting and then some. Very arty results. I like them especially the shot at 7:46.

Thanks mate, yeah I thought I'd share something a bit different. You're right though you do need some gear for it, although I've seen similarly styled shots using long exposure and torches. But in the winds I had, that would have made for a pretty blurry tree!

What a great video it’s all about photography and you share your passion for photography unlike Gary Gough last video which has nothing to do with photography!!

Thanks Peter, yeah I thought that was a very odd choice of video for Gary Gough too

Loved the finished images Dave, I wasn’t aware of backplates until now, still not sure about how they’d necessarily fit into my workflow, but definitely something to add to the toolbox for sure. Bit of reading required methinks

Thanks Martin. I'll be honest, I had no intention on the day of talking so much about 'backplates'! It wasn't until I started putting the footage together that I realised just how many times I'd said the word haha. It's something I do all the time for portrait and product work. Basically clean images free of 'subject clutter' that can be used in the retouching process.

Wow, that's a really interesting technique mate. I've never thought of something like that, but then again, I don't know anything about portrait photography or working with umbrellas. The results are fantastic though, the drama you created was incredible, especially that image at 7:43! I'm interested to hear others reaction on this one, but the results absolutely speak for themselves! Fantastic work as always, really enjoyed that one! Chat soon mate!

Cheers mate. TBH the gate image won't make it into my final collection when I finish it all up but the two tree shots I am really pleased with. I learnt a lot from the outing as well, some things not to do. Felt it was about time that I started to bring some of the skills from other genres into the landscape to create stuff that isn't just 'another Mam Tor'! Should keep me going for the next 12 months, although I doubt I'll do more than a couple of vlogs on it - as you could see in the vid, night time film recording out in the PD ain't great for viewing quality!

Some very striking images Dave - love the drama. Almost like treating landscape as a studio shot. Was that at Surprise View?

Thanks mate, yes Surprise View it was - I have to go there in the dark to avoid paying those daytime car park fees 🤣
