My brother tasting his 47 year old Chateau Mouton Rothschild 1970 on Boxing Day 2017 in Hale, UK.
He bought this wine in a mixed case from an auction house in Knutsford about 5 years ago. We have slowly worked our way though the lesser vintages and this is the last wine remaining.
As you can see, this is a legendary vintage wine, which improved considerably after opening. However it wouldn't justify the price.
PS he's got my Christmas present, his sandal socks on.

You need a more inviting intro. But it’s very cool to have documented this for everyone to enjoy. Great job 🍷👍🏻 you might need an Ah-So wine opener for bottles like this. Recently tested one for a video here on YT, for wonders on old wines. Cheers 🥂

there is this thing called an Ah-So it makes corks like that easy. Also, I have had a well stored 70 that had way less ullage than that, and it was nice, but is an unimpressive vintage. Smokey would not be a descriptor I would use. The camera man nailed it, with "quite thin".

Why are you calling the old man your assistent ALL the time? Guy has a name, doesn't he? Dont take yourself too seriously! That doesn't go well with your sandals and white socks.

Couple of fundamental errors. But ok. Wonder how it tasted. Definitely a different style decanter. Maybe a wine that age would benefit just pouring from bottle.

You do not use that TOY to open a 47 year old bottle of Mouton. And you "decanter" is a joke. If you can afford the wine, you can afford the proper tool!

Thanks for the video. Just a couple of points. You are using a spirits decanter, which lacks the flat bottom to enable the wine properly to oxidise. Here, most of the wine is not in contact with the air. Also, why didn’t you let it breathe for several hours? It’s vital with this wine to let it settle and breath as it’s more than 40 years old. The flavours simply won’t develop and you got maybe 20% of the full flavour. The smokey taste you refer to is the result of a lack of oxygen in the wine.

G'Day mate, just my input here. I've found that the younger the wine (maybe 5 years or under) decanting the wine for several hours does open the wine up significantly. However, with older vintages, especially one as old as this bottle, it's already been exposed to a decent amount of oxygen. The oldest wine I've personally drank was 21 years old, and the wine really only needed 15 minutes to open up like I wanted it to. The smokey taste he mentioned wouldn't have been due to the lack of oxygen btw, I've heard of many wines of this age developing smokey, tobacco characteristics. On the decanter end though... I completely agree with you haha

Thank you for the comment. I can see you are very experienced with wine and about how to get the full taste and enjoyment from it. I would love to hear more about what else I could do to make a vintage wine taste nicer. Once again thank you for your advice and comment👍

Several hours? No. That would be too long for a wine this age. 30 to 45 minutes would be more appropriate. Also, you don't know what he did with the rest of the bottle. Why not taste and see how it does before and after decanting? It's people like you who give wine a bad name and make people afraid to try things. If you're going to be a snob, at least do your research and be a proper snob. I thought this was a lovely video.

@@JBJones66 no, not for a mouton Rothschild - these wines are still very very powerful even at this age. For a delicate burgundy, I agree. For this, which is a cab sauv heavy blend it needs longer without a doubt. That’s what the wine guides all say.
