Over on my patron only Discord server we talk about Daniel Smith watercolours a lot but I’ve never tried them, so I bought myself a limited palette of primaries and their Payne’s Grey to try out! I’m basically converted now but will probably balance my painting time with my old faithfuls (Winsor & Newton Professional Watercolours) and these.

I'm honestly always so impressed with how methodical you are about your paint mixtures! I feel like as though I black out and forget what I did for a portion of my painting process haha! So glad you enjoyed the paints, I adore Daniel Smith! Looking forward to the next video

I do the same for sure, I get into a kind of rhythm and black out until my phone screams “YOU’VE RAN OUT OF MEMORY” or my cat wants a cuddle 😂

This is lovely 💙 If you can find them near you (or online), Daniel Smith makes dot cards so you can test every color before you buy. There's enough paint on them to really test them out and determine which colors you really want, while allowing you to use those you only want a touch of (like the shimmers) on your normal paintings without getting the full tube.

That’s a good idea, I’ve seen them before because sales assistants had brought them out when I was browsing a while back, but I never thought they were for sale. I’ll definitely consider than before buying more 🖤🖤

Love the final piece! Just a note, the Alizaran Crimson you got is fugitive, they have an alternative Permanent Alizaran Crimson I recommend if you're concerned with light fastness. As for the iridescent colors, I've heard they are not as good as other metallic out there. I recommend coliro/finetec if you want beautiful metallic watercolor. Looking forward to future videos!

@@Finelinernerd Speaking of fugitive, moonglow also unfortunately fades too. I saw this on a blog post by Jane Blundell (I hope I spelled her name right). That was a downer to know, because I really love the moonglow color.

I’ve heard from a few people about this, it really is a shame isn’t it! I got some moonglow for Christmas so I’m going to do a lightfastness test myself just so I know how much it changes against other colours that are supposed to have excellent lightfastness, I’ll mention it in a relevant video when I have the results 🤗🖤

I have heard that Moonglow is fugitive due to the PR 177 used in the mix. I heard from the same person that a good substitute is a mix of Viridian, Quin Coral and French Ultramarine from Daniel Smith, which is very close in appearance but is lightfast. DS is my absolute favorite watercolor paint! Beautiful painting, thx for sharing your thoughts!

finally someone actually PAINTS with Daniel Smith or other high end WC. All I've watch for years are people swatching them and comparing them with other brands. I agree with you about a lot of things, Masking fluid, the convenience of using a calligraphy nib (for example) to apply the fluid, haven't tried, but as I'm inking a lot lately occurred to me could be easier to use a nib instead of a brush. The high cost of the Daniel Smith paints. And living in Mexico is a lot more costly to get them. Besides I paint mostly large projects, i barely use half a sheet of paper, commonly i use the whole sheet. So tubes run out fast.

Thanks for another wonderful video. I've only just started using Daniel Smith watercolours and, as you say, they are very intense and, even though they are expensive, they go a long way. By the way, I think your source's 'hat' is a kokoshnik ... a traditional headdress in Russia and Ukraine.

I can totally relate to your sentiments about using other than W&N. I started with W&N Cotman 48 pan and they have worked wonderfully for me all the while. I discovered DS earlier this year and the rave about it. I was intrigued to give them a try but the price per tube (after conversion rate) kept putting me off. I finally invested in French Ultramarine, Perylene Red, Indigo, Payne's Grey, Hansa Yellow and Moonglow and I could see why it was so popular, especially Moonglow. I would love to give the other granulating colours a try as they are no other than DS that makes them. I guess that's what sets them apart from the other brands. Oh, you might also like to try Holbein. Holbein has only one grade so that means it is a professional grade paint all the way. Just a tiny drop can go a long way. I've also been using Holbein in my pieces. Like DS, I only invested in the primary colours and I was able to go a long way. Thank you for taking the time to make this video 😊🙏

Hey Maureen! I had a similar start with watercolours, I started with a REALLY old set of Reeves from my university days which I now know were quite bad paints 😅 and quickly bought Cotman tubes which served me very well like they did you. Thanks for the suggestion of Holbein paints, I’ll be taking a look at those for sure 🖤🖤

@Deejay d Thank you for sharing your thoughts and findings of Holbein. I've not experienced the excessive white opaque unless I use their gouache. I came to know about it through another artist whom I had to subscribe to her Patreon where she describes and shares in detail about her work and materials that she uses. Her primary palette is Holbein and she pairs them with Arches paper. She did some experiments with other watercolour papers and it did not give the same results unless that combination is adopted. I'm attaching the link to her channel here in case you would like to take a look -> kzfaq.info/love/6REX05YGmRdpGm8vfe5txw I've heard good comments about Schminke but they are so expensive after the currency conversion for me. There is also the Mijello Mission and Sennelier which I am dying to try. Again, I will need to slowly build a budget for these 😊 I do agree with you about the pigments and them becoming too muddy when mixed. I had experienced this earlier on in my journey. I just got some and after seeing this im so glad i did because i do a lot of the same techniques as you and currently my paints dont blend well with that water kind of technique to blend shadows into base colours. Im so glad of my purchase.

i think the ideal is to get 6 colors. you should get the three primaries in warm and cool tones to maximize mixing possibilities.

Good video man. Daniel Smith is awesome. I would suggest not using moonglow since it’s fugitive (Kimberly Crickart has a good video about this and how to make a lightfast replacement).

Try out their dot card. I held off for awhile but then it really solidified what I wanted Also here is a list of some of their beautiful colors that are defiantly worth trying: lemon yellow, Deep scarlet or quinacridone burnt scarlet (AMAZING for portraiture), quinacridone coral, sodalite genuine, transparent red oxide, cascade green, green apitite genuine, jadeite genuine, undersea green, kyanite genuine, quinqcridone rose One more thing, Moonglow is an absolutely STUNNING color, however the lightfastness is off in rating as the PR177 is not lightfast in watercolor form. I would recommend mixing a hue from ultramarine (PB29), Viridian (PG18), and a red such as quinacridone coral or quinacridone Rose

I just stumbled across your channel and so glad I did. I really enjoyed watching this and your inspiration board just wow'd me! I use Daniel Smith watercolors and I've been collecting them for about 6 years now. I think you would really love "Terre Ercolano" as well as "Minnesota Pipestone" for some beautiful glowing skin tones. I really love the Primatek line of these paints as well and finally have a few of the duochromes which are just as magical. The dot cards are simply a must! 🤗

this is really helpful i have been using windsor and newton artist colours for years. i had schmincke hordam set and i had to sell them as they reactivated too much i found i couldn’t really layer with them or do that pull away technique. i’m not knocking the schmincke they are amazing but these seem like they would be better suited for me

they're really expensive here but i love them... btw i hear moonglow is fugitive too, but there are videos on here showing how to mix your own version of them. some of their other convenience mixes are beautiful, and i really recommend the quin gold. beautiful painting and explanations, just subscribed

I heard about the moon glow, it’s a shame but I’ll look into mixing my own as you say (and Daniel Smith being pricey is why I own only a handful of tubes, so worth it but my wallet wears the trousers in our relationship hahah!)

Yeah I’m hindsight it’s something like a humectant that helps with the flow I think because they dry sticky to the touch on the palette, either way the way these perform is so so nice. And I’m glad you liked the video 🤗

@@Finelinernerd - Daniel Smith & Qor watercolors are both vegan. Neither use any ox gall. However I believe DS Ivory Black, Sepia, and Payne's gray are not vegan due to them using bone char.

You can also look on amazon for silicone brushes that work well for masking fuild! The one I got has a metal end on one side and the silicone brush tip.

I got mine from Jackson’s too, they have the biggest range here and I think I’ll get the dot cards so I can try more colours in the future

good luck 😂 as once you start on daniel smith you probably keep buying them as they have unique gorgeous colours that is a bit addictive to get them. but the moonglow I suggest to read reviews first about the light fastness. as it appeared to be a fugitive colour after some did light fastness test of this colour.

Omg Brenda I’m doing everything in my power to stay off Jackson’s right now, there are another 3 colours at least for my essential palette and I could easily buy the entire collection 😅 a couple of people have said that about the moonglow so I’ll definitely keep that in mind 🖤

@@Finelinernerd may I share some advice? to help in the 😍 effect standing in the shop or online shop looking at daniel smith paints picking more daniel smith paints to avoid you pick them all and spend easy 500 £ out of a sudden 🤭 (6 to 18 £ a tube 😱) it's recommendable to buy their dot card at first. so you can swatch all the colours in their collection and by that way can choose which ones have you preference. they have several colours that look similar to each other but are different in pigment such as made from minerals, granulating or not, a multicolour mix in 1 tube or pure pigment, light fastness or not so much and a different outcome when mixed with other colours eventhough natural they look very similar. it really depends the artist preference and painting style which of the 2 similar colours match the individual artist. on daniel smith website they give information about each colour. I got myself the dotcard and it helped a lot togheter with searching some specific colours on their website for more info about the characteristics of the colour. moonglow is a beautiful colour but you might need to protect against light that decolour the pigment strongly. that hasn't been tested yet if it's light that reduces the pigments over time or if it's time that reduces it. if it's light then there are glass panel in framing as you probably know that filters UV out and coatings and fixatives. maybe I gonna do a light fastness test myself. 🤭 because moonglow is very beautiful.

Hello, thank you for your time doing these. Quite informative. I am new to watercolor (only four months) but I am already a bit frustrated with Master's Touch, the only paint I've used since the beginning. However, after watching other videos and reading much information, I now want to upgrade to better paint, and most likely Daniel Smith. But like most everything else, Amazon offers numerous choices on most any single product and paint is no exception. I thought it would be a simple task to just look for Daniel Smith Professional, but I do not see that listed. So, my question is: is Daniel Smith professional paint not called professional, but "Extra Fine?" Thank you.

@@Finelinernerd Thank you very much. Yes, I am pursuing a dream from a young age. In my twenties I earmarked teaching myself to paint at 50. I figured that was a good age when I'd be through with all of life's crap. Of course, I was wrong and life kind of got in the way of painting. Now, at almost 70, I had a burning desire to start painting and that's what I'm doing. I really fell in love with it. My paintings are so bad, however. But I figure maybe 5 people in the world will ever see them ... none of whom will be an art critic. So, I'm off and running with no regrets. (Sorry to reiterate, but you're saying the "Extra Fine" quality is the top of the line? Thank you, sir.)

Hi Robin, good for you!! And don’t worry about “good” or “bad” because I believe creativity can’t be measured that way. As long as you make things you love and are proud of with a desire to improve then that’s all that matters 🖤 the extra fine watercolours are what all their watercolours are called, and their pricing is different for each colour depending on how rare the pigments are. Their “primatek” watercolours are a specialist subcategory with pigments/formulas that create different effects so I’d avoid those unless you’re feeling confident, and then they have sparkly watercolours which are their “luminescent” and “pearlescent” watercolours. The crown was beautiful it’s always so cool seeing artist do detail like that. Heads up on moonglow an artist on here called kimberly crick art, recently discovered it might *not be as lightfast as advertised if that’s something you care about it is gorgeous tho can’t lie lol. P.s. I did try one of my Payne’s grey recently and really enjoyed it, it was sennelier 🥳

I LOVE the Senellier Payne’s grey! It’s much less blue than other brands isn’t it? Thanks for the tip on the moon glow colour, I sell my paintings a couple of times a year so light fastness is really important to me. I’ll get a small tube and test it under sunlight before using it 😊

Wait, Kimberly said it's was lightfast? I only saw the video where she said it's, on the contrary, fugitive, and even gave ways for people to mix their own Moonglow, one which is not fugitive. So that's a complete turnaround, and I thought I saw all her videos since then 🤔

I am so happy you included the mixing of your special colors. I've been missing that in other artist's videos sometimes because I tend to spend a lot of time mixing to get the color I want or disappointedly seeing that it is not going where I want it to. It is fun, but I have a limited time schedule. And lifting up the paint from layers beneath is my biggest challenge, it happens when I don't want it to and doesn't work when I need it to. I also have to use school color watercolors because that is what I have and it hasn't been used up yet. And before I buy myself nice expensive colors I want to first have used up the old stuff. Do you ever go back to your cheaper range colors? Impressive how symmetrical your picture looks. I struggle with that too. This is very pretty.

I’m glad to hear you liked seeing that because I’m going to do a video about a limited colour palette and getting to know how much you can mix from buying so few paints. Just know that you don’t need to invest in a huge palette of premium paints when you decide to get some, you probably need 6-8 colours maximum 🖤🖤

@@Finelinernerd I would love that! I especially have trouble creating a vibrant purple. My paints have purple, but it is kind of muddy and when I mix it myself it is worse. Thanks for the tip on premium paints, I will definitely keep that in mind! All I want is paints that work well and are not so chalky. Basically like what you said about it in the video. Easy to remove, but also easy to blend.

I would recommend Cotman paints by Winsor & Newton, they’re inexpensive and very good quality, they’re not “artist” quality but they are fab. My favourite colours to mix purple are Alizarin crimson and indigo, when it’s more blue and pale it’s like lavender, and when it’s stronger with more red it’s jewel-bright 😍

If you are near a Tindalls art shop, they stock a good range of Daniel Smith - I'd really recommend trying some of their granulating colours, they are so beautiful and really add something to a picture. Sodalite genuine is gorgeous. Plus they have some fabulous colours that do interesting things - like the Cascade Green. (if you're interested, here's something I did recently - sodalite in the sky textures, cascade green with shadow violet washes in the sea part - instagram.com/p/CGZ6KUPHU4C/ ) I'm a tad obsessed with all the different watercolours you can get and really into handmade ones, so yay for doing a collab for your next video!

Maybe get kyanite from Daniel Smith. It’s a natural stone pigment. Primatek watercolor. See channel Dr. Oto Kano. She swatches out colors and compares side by side.

Love Daniel Smith and m Graham because they rewet really easily. WN less so (though you can add glycerine).

I’ve never tried the W&N tubes, good to know they struggle to re-wet though for future (I love their half pans though). I hear a lot about M Graham so I’ll need to find some of those to try out one day 🖤

@@Finelinernerd m Graham are great but there are a few tubes that squeezed out ( cobalt teal is infamous) that never set up, so don’t put that one in travel set. I’d forgotten since I use tubes but I gather pans/half pans of WN are “normal”, it is only their tubes that are mixed differently and so rewet less easily.

I love Daniel Smith watercolours, and I discovered them while trying to find vegan watercolours (which feels like an almost impossible crusade...) For those who actually care about this, even though Daniel Smith doesn't use ox gall nor honey in their mixture -which is great! - those colours containing Pbk9 are not vegan since they're made from animal charred bones (Ivory Black, Sepia & Payne's Grey) so personally, I stay away from those. But these watercolours are absolutely lovely to work with!

Do you still recommend these paints in light of recent events? I'm European and I don't know if the quality is worth paying so much for a product that might turn out to have secret additives or false lightfastness information.

@@Finelinernerd Haha, I should've clarified a bit more to be honest so that's on me. Someone on Instagram (worldpigmentday) analysed the primatek line and found it to barely contain the minerals it claims to contain- instead the colour is the result of common, sometimes toxic or fugitive, pigments and such that DS has been keeping off the labels. When asked about this they were incredibly passive aggressive and condescending towards them. Shortly after this Kimberly Crick Art found fluorescent additives in their manganese blue hue, also unlisted, that are understandably fugitive. I was thinking tried and true workhorse colours such as ultramarine blue could be safe to buy (since I really want to try them!) but now I'm not sure.

Oh wow that’s pretty serious huh! Thanks for filling me in! I’ve never had a problem with these paints but I don’t have many so perhaps I’ve been lucky 🤷🏻♂️ if you’re worried about DS paints then I would recommend Winsor & Newton professional series personally if you wanted some really nice paints, I’ve always been very happy with them 🖤🖤

Moonglow is an interesting color, but another youtuber demonstrated that the red in it fades pretty bad. I've not personally done a lightfast test with my tube so I can't vouch. She does demonstrated how to mix your own lightfast version in the video

Hey Kim! A couple of people mentioned that too, it’s a shame because I sell my paintings and light fastness is definitely important to me. Apparently I accidentally mixed a version with Indigo and Pyroll red (which I understand to have near perfect light fastness). Do you remember the KZfaqr’s name so I can check that video out? 🖤
