Hello everyone! A new year, a new watercolour sketchbook! In this video I try out Etchr’s signature series watercolour sketchbook made with cold press, 100% cotton Fabriano paper. I also explore loosening up with my brush strokes and mark making to make a more organic portrait than normal, so the process features footage of me using the wet in wet technique, dragging, charging and using hard edges in watercolour. I hope you enjoy it!

Absolutely love and agree with your sentiments about wanting to experiment and be looser in my sketchbook! <3

i always find it useful if youre someone who worries about keeping a neat sketchbook to just glue in finished pages you like into one book, helps keep the pressure off when working with nice paper, you dont have to be perfect consistently every drawing in a row.

I love it when I have childlike fun creating stuff. It really is freeing. Taking off the pressure of having to produce something beautiful should be normal, but I kinda have trouble managing that and always end up building road blocks for myself.

so i have a couple different sketchbooks (one of them is a daily sketchbook practice that i have been keeping for 5 years and its filled with "bad pantings") and honestly the best thing about a sketchbook is all work being together makes to look back on it see how your style has evolved how even your down days are part of your story. they are really really autobiographical and really really interesting to look back on after some time has passed. happy 2021 James :)

Oh my gosh I relate so much to what you are saying about the freedom a new sketch book gives you. I also have started swatching and allowing imperfect sketches to stay in my books rather than erase them and try and fix them. It’s so liberating! Allowing yourself to be loose in your sketchbook is the best feeling.

I feel like a lot of artists feel really pressured to have the first thing they put down be really good, so I like the idea of just putting down some swatches or something imperfect on the first page to counteract that.

Happy New Year, James! So good to have a new video from you 😊 Enjoy your sketchbook a lot. As you said, do not put too much pressure on your shoulders while filling it (we all have the same pressure I guess. We’re our worst enemy haha !) Sketchbook is a place to experiment, have fun, and where we’re allowed to make mistakes to learn more and more. This one could be a good place to experiment gouache maybe ? And sometimes it’s really surprising to see what emerges from these no pressure drawings/paintings. Again, I wish you a wonderful year, and thank you for your videos (and hearing you laughing is always a pleasure 😁)

♡♡♡ That is one beautiful sketchbook. ♡♡♡ I can totally relate to what you said about working in a sketchbook; I struggled for years to work in sketchbooks because as soon as I created something I didn't like, I'd feel it was 'ruined' and stop using it. Which is silly because sketchbooks are meant for experiments and working things out, and 'unfinished' things etc. Your paint swatches are such beautiful colours. I love seeing them next to the painting as it shows part of the journey and thought process.

So happy I found your channel! My sketchbooks are always a mess and all about experimenting. But that’s ok. It’s all about learning about making the bad art so you can make good stuff.

I bought this same sketchbook last year and haven't opened it yet. I had no idea about the logo being pressed in to the paper and that makes me uncomfortable. Really appreciate your thoughts in preparation for my own use of the same book! Also looking forward to all of your amazing experiments in 2021!

This sketchbook is beautiful. I bought an etcher sketchbook for this year too but it doesn’t have decked edges like that, just ordinary cut edges. Still 100% cotton paper but I’m not sure if it’s fabriano.

With exception of cold/hot press paper difference, how do you think the Paul Rubens sketchbook compares to the etchr?
