This week we tackle prep work for solar and plumbing at our investment property and also being the task of installing stone around our foundation. It's a week of many ups and downs, including a devastating attack on our farm.

We are a couple who are building our own home from the ground up in the mountains of West Virginia. After living near the city our entire lives, we finally decided to sell it all, pack up our 3 kids and live in an RV on our 73 acres while building our own debt-free, off-grid house and learning to live a more self-reliant life.
As of 2022, we are living inside our A-Frame home. The next phase for us includes building the bedroom wing onto our home while also building investment properties and renovating dilapidated homes.

My advice as a builder of forty five years, it's the same as dry stone walling, (i've done a lot) use the stone you have, never refuse a stone, make sure you don't usse too many bigger stones first, or in the end you're left with lots of small ones, i'd use them straight off the pallet, it really does work out, they stacked them after all, love the channel, well done so far, you've got this.
@wirelesmike73
@wirelesmike73 2 жыл бұрын
This is very, very good advice from Anthony. Let the stones go where they want to fit. Try not to shape them unless there's no other option. Try to utilize as many smaller stones to fill between the ones that don't fit as tightly as you may initially like, and keep as many of the larger stones as you can for later in the job. Just like wood, you can always take stone away a little at a time, but you can't put it back when you need it. Have a little fun playing with the placement of the smaller stones and keep in mind that irregularity is part of what makes stone look so good. You're not building a pyramid, it's not supposed to be "perfect". ;)

This is one of those moments where it might go up and stick for now, but after a bunch of kids running around on the deck vibrates the walls or a kid bumping into the wall, in a year or less, those stone veneers might start falling off (if they don't put up a scratch surface first before buttering each stone and putting it up).

Before Josh got injured a while back, I thought the plan was to build a concrete curb to set the stone on top of. I'm worried that that's a lot of weight to not have a support at the bottom. I might get a 2" x 2" pressure treated piece of wood and screw it to the bottom edge. Stain it to match the deck. I don't know if you were instructed to install the stone the way you are doing it, but I think it would stand a better chance of sticking in the long run, if you nailed metal lathe to the wall first and put the thinset on the wall as well as on the stone. I'd also wet the stone so it absorbed some water. Dry stone will pull moisture out of the mix and it will dry out before it fully cures. And even though it might seem like a waste of time, I'd measure out an area on the ground that corresponded to the area you are covering with stone. Fill it with stones and arrange them to get that "random but not haphazard" look. You might do some searches for stone walls with similar stones and see how they arranged them. I hope the cat pulls through. They do make wheels for cats and dogs, if you need them.

Coyotes never give up or go away. We have lived this fight for the last 30 years. It was when we fenced the total outer perimeter and got our Pyrenees, of which we now have 4 on 100 ac. It is discouraging when it happens but it seems to never end. Also we have disposed of over 26 coyotes, 6 bobcats, and racoons. Good luck with the controls you chose.

Well, that's an interesting way to do stone face. Generally a ledge is used at the bottom and you build up, similar to tile. Also, not using mortar on the wall with a notched trowel, and butter and notch the stone is how I was taught. Gravity works.

I completely agree, for one they well overbuilt the wall to hold the stone, and then not even place the stone correctly, I know there are many ways to do it, but that way will never hold and the stone will fall within a couple winters..

They are skipping important steps here. This is one of those parts of a project where skipping key steps will ultimately cost more in the end. These stones may very well fall off the wall over the next few months because the moisture and temperature fluctuations will differ from the substrate to the stone. Next winter, moisture will find its way behind them and freeze, forcing them off the wall as well. We always use lathe with a scratch coat with a notched trowel and then apply the stone…or a brown coat if stucco finish is desired. It takes time which I am sure you observed with your installation. Everyone just needs to take time.

But we used mortar and if the stone was being difficult we would add a solo cup of cement to the mixer. The only downfall is that the cement gets all over the stone if you’re not careful. I used a the edge of my trowel to chip the stone, like a hatchet. Another tool that I found useful was clippers used on horse hooves, works great 👍🏻 you guys are doing good, sometimes you have to learn as you go 👍🏻

Sorry for the bad news -- hope she pulls through. Y'all are much like us in that you'll do whatever it takes to give your animals a good life (referring to the choice you made at the vet). Sounds like dead rabbit squeals on the boom box and a thermal scope on the AR time....just saying. Take care.

I wondered about wild animals coming in but I guess you live in their roaming territory. Sad to hear about the cat. I pray for her daily progress and healing. I hope she gets to walk again soon. The stone wall so far looks great.

We had a black cat that was attacked by a Great Horned Owl years ago. She survived with a permanently straightened back leg. They are amazing what they can recover from. All the best. BTW the wall is looking great 👍

You could get a small group of Guinea hens . They will let you know if any predators are around and eat all bugs they see .

Been waiting for this part seems like YEARS! You too I bet. Very impressive so far. If you think this part of the stonework is taking a long time, JUST WAIT! You’re going to have to ‘point’ it all too!
