We are sharing the results of the concrete core samples we had tested to determine whether or not we need to tear down our brand new investment build. Back at our homestead, we continue working on the stone wall- adding 90s to the corner and push forward the fence build.

We are a couple who are building our own home from the ground up in the mountains of West Virginia. After living near the city our entire lives we finally decided to sell it all, pack up our 3 kids and live in an RV on our 73 acres while building our own debt free, off-grid house and learning to live a more self-reliant life.
Our house build is documented entirely on our main channel "Wild Wonderful Off-Grid" and our family life vlogs can be found on our secondary channel "Wild Wonderful After Show"

Hay Guys I am a civil engineer with alot of expirenc, more then 40 years. I am following your chanel for along time and enjoying it very much. I just so the video on the failure of the concrete samples. In my opinion , you can still continue building your house without destroying the Existing structure. As much as I know there is no risk of Earthquake in your area. And even though the samples are not good the structure will be able to Stand the forces. Sorry for my English. I am from Israel. If you you went to be on the safe side call en local enginer that will give you his opinion on the mater. You are very sweet family. keep it up. Nimrod

Screw the concrete, why not just use metal stilts to prop the house up, run it the same way the first house is w concrete filled tubes in the ground. I see a bunch of mansions done this way and cabins on mountains and reveens.

@randomman057

@@MrPappymn Who knows honestly. It could have to do with a lot of things. Thumbnails, video titles, length of videos, editing, or plenty of other reasons. And sometimes channels just get promoted less than others. The property they're building is more of the same content that a lot of people originally came here to see. Also, their promotions aren't any more than other KZfaqrs I've seen. I also believe I may know which channel you might be referring to that grew a lot faster than this one. And to be honest, their growth may just come down to their on camera personalities.

As a contractor w/ 30 years experience, when i watched to original video, i was blown away that they ONLY built a 2x4 footer frame!! Here in NC its 8" Min and goes up to 12" thick and then 24" wide!! No vertical rebar inside the footer - connecting the wall, as you stated and the tiny baby 2x4 thick footer that is MAYBE ok for a tree house. I knew you'd have to take it down. So glad you started over. Only upward and onward from here. Best of luck moving forward. Keep It Up!! You got this.

I know it is a pain to redo things like that foundation, but you will be so glad you did it right. That may have been one of the worst foundations jobs ever. Brown soupy concrete that had way too high a slump, poorly done forms that burst open and were not even straight, no height control on the walls and the J bolts just plop into the walls. It is actually amazing the concrete tested as high as it did as bad as it looked. Not to mentions leaving out the rebar and mis-positioning all of the other piers and using junk gravel as base fill. Not sure how they could screw it up more.... But, hopefully you will find a good one this time.

You're simply the best on all levels in the homesteading league. You never fail to get me a smile on my face, even when there's an occasional onion-cutting going on. The concrete in the investment property looked extremely suspicious to me when they poured it and your lab confirmed it. The building/contracting industry is so inefficient that, in my country, local government rents public infrastructure out to the building company that does a repair or modification job. If they agree in the contract that the job can be done in a good way in two weeks then the contract says the contractor can charge the rent for those two weeks back to the municipality. No BS, no excuses, no small print. The problem with the pour, from the looks of it, was that it was way too wet. You need water to make the chemical bonding happen between parts of the concrete, but too much water triggers the chemical reaction without proper bonding and worst case, you end up with something that is like sand.

I was studying some tests about different concrete mixtures. The strongest concrete is made when the amount of water is actually LESS than what’s specified. As little as possible. Of course pouring it becomes a challenge at that point, and without tamping it down and compressing it, it may have air pockets in it, weakening the structure. So the “normal “ amount of water is already a tradeoff, weakening the concrete in exchange for easier pouring. Adding MORE water just makes it even weaker in 100% of the cases. And beyond “more water”, there is “too much water” and then that dirty water they dared to call “concrete”. I was actually hoping this test will fail. Because if THIS concrete doesn’t fail, then concrete standards are lies:D

You guys and the kids are all awesome. I believe that telling all who the contractor involved is would never be considered vindictive by your family of viewers . You both have earned the respect of all of us who have watched your channel since you were living in the camper with 3 happy kids…. That alone shows everyone watching that unless they “MAKE THIS RIGHT, WITH MINIMUM STRESS to your fam … they should be exposed. I love watching and look forward to every new episode …THANKS , Michael

Gotta know , Josh when you wired up under the deck , we're you planning on brooder bins being there in the future ? Or was it an after thought ? Cause it seems your mind sees things 2 steps ahead

Quite a few holes still to make for the fence posts before you complete that red line on the sketch... Did you consider a fence post drill aggregate for the back of the tractor but ruled it out for the benefit of building biceps or something? :)

Stonework looks GREAT!!! Finishing touches are the icing on the cake. Hope that you can negotiate with the contractor to work things out. That you're taking it in stride is a great sign of maturity. I'm old and would probably throw a hissy fit. Best wishes to all!

You could build a second perimeter foundation with CMU and leave that one if it works with the structural layout of the house. Then you save yourself the demo and waste fees

FYI weather patterns are not unusual. 1987, 1993 and 1997 all had late April and 1 early may snow. In 1993 snow last for over a week. Before that I lived in Alabama but was snowed in with family once I remember in 1960. Thank goodness it does not happen every year. All your hard work is paying off your farm is turning out beautiful. Thank you for sharing you story with all of us

Wow my heart fell to my feet hearing that news even though I felt it was definitely coming down and starting all over. What an awful experience for yall. I'm so sorry you've had to go through this disaster. Breaks my heart. It's just terrible there's people out there that will do these things to others like that and I pray nothing bad has happened with others that have used this guys business. Well now that yall know you can get the contractors back to work and get it rolling again and hopefully find a competent concrete company that will do the job right. Ellie always being warm when it's cold means she's going to have the immune system of a polar bear 🐻‍❄️ 😁😉 Well thats one way to get Mike & mellisa down to your place. You hit shale digging that post hole.Mike will be loading the excavator on his trailor and be up shortly to dig a huge pile of shale for future projects around the farm and for the kids to climb on haha Yes Erin I've had the same feelings about your animals and why I said in one post that I would fence the pasture in to keep them safe. So I agree even though it's not an easy thing to do. I didn't know yall had a pond.loved the drone shot of your property cuz I've always wondered what the rest looked like.thats cool surprised we've never see video of the kids down throwing flat stones across the pond or just playing around it. But maybe they've gotten orders not to be down there cuz someone could drown. Just me being the worry wart I am.runs in the family LOL. Yall be safe God bless 🙏

I hated and felt so bad when you had your problem with your investment property, but after watching your family as you started your journey together with your beautiful home and how both of you overcome any challenges through the build. I believe without a doubt you will get through the issue with your investment property with flying colors because you all always work together to overcome any kind of obstacle. Keep up the awesome work. You all are awesome

I've been around concrete construction much of my life, and I have to say that was the worst looking pour I have ever seen. Sorry about you guys having to tear the wall down, but its absolute the right choice. I was surprised those cores even broke at 2400psi. Hopefully you will be able to get some of your money back from the contractor.

When they were doing the pour I told my wife that didn't look right at all, way to wet. Sucks they have to tear it down but better now then have issues down the road when it cracks open.
