As a die hard Tool fan for 25 years i have to say their fans can be insufferable. Tool fans act like they are still this misunderstood underground band that they need to explain and not one of the most mainstream bands of all time that knocked Taylor effing Swift out of the #1 spot when they released their last album.

Surely the thing with emo nostalgia is not about wanting to go back to high school to be bullied, but about reminiscing about the music that (in their minds) helped them through that bullying in the first place?

As a psychologist I have seen it quite a few times; the vaunted fan who's salty their fav isn't socially relevant anymore and channels that resentment into uncontrollable D riding as a coping mechanism. What people fail to understand over and over and over is that a human being cannot help what musical art speaks to their soul. So if I don't like your band I don't like your band but I'm glad they move you and speak to your soul. Metal Gatekeepers are some of the worst... I don't care about 15,000 subgenres of metal. Pigeonhole and cornering it into all these little boxes takes away from any enjoyment you can have with some fans

as a 31 year old I thank you Finn for reminding me I only have a few months of being cool left. When I'm 32 I think I will start listening to megadeth. Also... doorguy metal ftw.

I think the hardcore scene is the most toxic about this because they'll straight up judge you in multiple ways; doesn't even have to be the well known bands, even the obscure ones have some kind of toxic aspect to them. And a lot of people try real had to prove they're more hardcore than others (whether knowing the band members, the most esoteric tattoos, went to the most festivals / shows, has the most merch, etc). I think true meatriding is when you're trying hard to justify your own musical taste and ego through a band. So if people don't like the band that you love, you have to double down because you feel like it says something bad about you. Once a band becomes mainstream, like Bring Me The Horizon, like Finn said, it doesn't really work that way anymore because it's hit a criticality of it's so popular enough and known, that it doesn't really hurt your ego or image much at all.

Megadeth has the meat rider fanbase because of their rivalry with Metallica. Rivalries always create loyal and tribal fanbases: you're Megadeth or Metallica, Pepsi or Coke, Nintendo or Sega.

i remember all i listened to was Tool. every day till the songs went numb on me....and then more lol. watching concerts, lyrical meaning videos, occult stuff, learning what little history we have of them.....then one day it fizzled out unbeknownst to me haha. now i'm in a "nu-metal bands i've somehow missed and have on repeat" phase rn.

I can kind of explain the hand tattoo stuff, I can only speak for the Navy side but a few years ago they changed the tattoo regs to allow full sleeves again, a smallish neck tattoo, and hand tattoos. I'm in San Diego which is a big military town and hand and neck tattoos have exploded here

I went through my "thrash big 4" phase in 2003 in highschool. I still only listen to Metallica from those 4, they were the biggest band then and now for a reason.

I feel like Bring Me has done too many different styles to really nail down a sizeable per capita of meat riders.

I had this experience in high school, but with punk music. A couple years later when I got into metal, all that noise seemed to disappear (this was around 2004 so the internet wasn't what it was with opinions and gate keeping). I still loved punk, but it got exhausting being fucked with over which sound waves were pleasant to my ears. Maybe they knew not to fuck with the tritones in metal.

I remember one time i was talking to this dude about KSE and metalcore songs we like, and then he brought up Unearth. I wasn't really familiar with more than 1 or 2 songs, and that was enough to set this kid off for like a half an hour about how I should know them and influence. He basically tried to make it seem like I was a poser and tried to delegitimize everything I said about KSE because I didn't know every Unearth song, "like, you don't know anything about metacore if you don't listen to ...." Also had this kid tell me I had a stupid opinion and don't know what i'm talking about because I like Mr.Bungle and don't like Death. The butthurt was so visible.

Maybe it’s the area I live in? I’m a meat rider for Sleep Token, yet the majority of people I know either don’t care for them, flat out hate them, or to this day have not even heard of them. I can count on one hand how many people I know who love them.

Right off the rip I'm glad you mentioned Glassjaw . My God I was read the riot act from countless friend's on why I should LOVE and ADORE their greatness ! To me , It just didn't grab me . Yeah some of the lyrics they forced me at gunpoint to read were pretty cool I guess . But they are playing me these songs smiling and bobbing their heads waiting for me to react like "SEE ! YOU SEE NOW ? " And I'm just like um...not really . So to shut it down I just say hmm.....maybe it will grow on me , if YOU like it their must be something I'm missing ! LOL !!!

The Sleep Token hate is crazy to me 🤣. From a steady following and two albums in, with a defined multitude of inspiration and talent. Then they go viral on tik tok and every hater is, all of a sudden, a hyper critc on what good music is. Y'all take yourselves way too seriously, you either enjoy or not 😂.

Haha agrees with Finn on everything except Avenged. Maybe not as much lately, but the late 2000s/early 2010s was an absolute meatriding frenzy period for them. Final would’ve been Sleep Token and Tool with Tool winning if it were up to me. Fun video!

I remember when Turnstile was starting out. (Their original drummer friggin ripped) Their first two albums blew me away and they easily became my favorite active hardcore band. But their sound has definitely evolved into its own style. I stopped listening to them after Non Stop Feeling cause I was pissed they basically weren't even writing hardcore songs anymore and I was salty and scared..of the change. I started listening to them again about a year ago and was actually pleasantly surprised by their newer albums and how fucking hard basically every song goes. Turnstile rules.

Im a really big Sleep Token Fan…. We can’t compete with Tool fans… I give a tool fan some Lore, they give me memes, Fibonacci Sequence, weird timings, Maynard, Danny Carey, novels….. I appreciate and respect Tool as a band, but their fans are pretty hard to talk to. Haha

Idk how I missed this video, but about 6 months ago I finally started listening to Origami Angel. Actually I started listening to Origami Angel on the way to see BMTH open for Fall Out Boy. I just saw Origami Angel for the first time the other day…and the description of the fans was spot on - but the show was insane. Very strange to mosh with a person dressed up in pirates of the Caribbean get up and joker facepaint while singing about going to McDonald’s at midnight. So for that, as much as I love both BMTH and Origami Angel, I would have put Gami up as well. It’s also more fun to ride Oli’s meat

To me, if you're not into thrashing, you're not a metal fan. Polyphia, as they said, is just nerd-core for ppl who like scales and music theory. It's not really music that makes you bang your head against the wall in order to forget your childhood trauma.

I used to Meatride so hard for Tool... until their last album. They are great. And their last album is good. But it was like asking me about my grandma while I Meatrode. 10 years of what I considered great Maynard output since their previous album... and then that. I am currently a big-time Megadeth Meatrider. I just don't get people who like thrash metal who don't like Megadeth. I get that Dave's voice is odd... but it just puts the hooks in deeper. Metallica is awesome; have way more iconic songs; I'm going to see them twice this weekend; but Megadeth just FEELS cooler to me in my soul. Can't really explain it. But other Megadeth fans usually just nod ponderingly, and throw up the horns. As you can tell by my avatar/profile logo, I'm a huge 311 fan. Actually, I designed that logo, that they used for one of their summer tours. But! I would not consider myself a 311 Meatrider. I don't gatekeep or try to promote them. I totally get why some people are turned off by them. That's okay.
