First of all, I love the animations and the way you edit! This is a great conversation about the gatekeeping that seems to emerge with Inktober. As far as traditional vs digital art goes, I think that they both have their benefits and drawbacks but there is a reason that both options exist - so artists can choose their own tools which they prefer, sometimes even a combination of traditional/digital! As a traditional artist, I don't have enough experience with digital art to compare it too much but I have on occasion created art digitally and I can see the appeal. To be honest, learning the drawing programs that people use might be the most daunting part. Since I have accumulated so many art supplies, it only makes sense for me to continue working traditionally as I'm comfortable with it at this point. I respect all artists and love to watch others who work in a different medium than I do! That all being said, Inktober and other drawing challenges don't need to have any set of strict rules. Sure, you could use the challenge to improve your inking skills, but you could also use it to practice sketching, painting, or drawing in a new style, and you could do this traditionally or digitally. Basically, its best to use the challenge in whatever way would benefit you or make the most sense to you. I did Inktober once in 2019 and I used it to practice my finelining skills. While the challenge was satisfying in the end, I felt that producing a drawing each day was stressful and interfered with my other work and other art and videos I wanted to complete during the month. Inktober may be especially challenging for youtube artists because we feel the need to make the challenge into videos, which is a lot of extra time and work on top of creating the drawings themselves. Maybe I will have a go at it again one day, though. Thank you for inviting me to contribute to this video and I am glad to be part of this discussion :)

Thank you so much for providing your thoughts on this topic, and I really am sorry that we weren't able to have you in the main video due to time constraints, but you are absolutely right. It really isn't the tools so much as what you do with them, and it's refreshing to see people creating something different than you. Pls anyone who sees the above comment give Alexis a sub, she is a lovely person who creates some fantastic work! 1000/10 highly recommend

as always, your video was insightful and incredibly well-put!! you have a way of talking about things that makes difficult topics sound so much more reasonable and objective and less inflammatory than so many other commentators and audiences alike, and it’s always so refreshing to listen to ;u; thank you for giving me a chance to comment on this as well!! also the Celestia mask on your sprite genuinely demolished me, i watched this in a coffee shop and the man sitting next to me literally made eye contact with me while i choked on my tea after seeing it okay also: the art?? murderous fiona??? I've done Inktober both traditionally and digitally- though this was the first year I was able to finish it. I'll be honest though- most of my motivation for finishing it was because I wanted to do a sketchbook tour of my Inktober pieces.

To be honest, I didn't know that the origin of the Inktober was kinda nuts, lol. Also, I didn't really know these October challenges perfectly, but when I see and read them I was thinking to give it a try. At first, was fine, but later I failed it. It wasn't for me, at least for now. I also have to remember the most important thing about art and social media, because I still have that problem sometimes. Amazing video once again Fiona!!!

As a hobbyist who used to draw traditionally, then switched to digital after very long break of drawing in general, all I can say is that dissing either is just dumb. Both require actual understanding of the tools given to you. Though atleast with digital drawing I dont have to worry about accidentally wiping my sweaty hands all over the paper...

Great video, There is no restricting art really and it can be expressed in anyway, shape or form. Traditional, digital, who cares really as long as it works. As a professional artist myself as long as I have fun, get my work done and get paid for it, it really doesn't matter as much at the end of the day 😆 So lets all just chill, make some amazing art and most importantly have fun 😁✌ keep up the great work and stay awesome.

i've been doing inktober since 2016, and my approach to it has definitely evolved over time. when i started, i stuck with the "official" prompt list, but now i like to hoard a bunch of prompt lists and pick which prompt i like best for each day. for me, my ultimate goal is to get something drawn every day, be it traditional, digital, sketched, inked, etc. i also try to use inktober/drawtober (as i tend to call it, to distance it from the creator) as a way to experiment and innovate. for example, this year i am making it a goal to ink as many traditional pieces in as many different ways as i can, since that's not one of my strong suits in theory i'd like to participate in huevember and other monthly prompts, but i've found that two monthly art events is as much as i can do without overloading myself- artfight in july, and drawtober in october

You saying that drawing everyday is impractical reminded me about how in an art class I took we had to do inktober and draw 1 everyday for 70% of our grade. Most people failed that challenge

I think I understand now why there are so many types of "Tober" challenges. I always wanted to do an inktober, but, I wanted to only do it with the traditional method. Except that I am not sure what are the tools , so, it ended up with me never trying inktober 😅 Never realized the event had such an odd drama behind it as well.

I said this almost exact same thing on duchesses video buuut. In my opinion, digital art isn't easier per-say it just more efficient(?). like you said in the video you don't have to worry about cleaning up or anything like that. you can just whip out your drawing tablet (or phone *cough * * cuz I'm a pleb). Also I just remembered you exist and how amazing you are. You put so much effort into your videos and its just...beautiful

Referring to the traditional vs digital thing, neither is harder or easier. As a traditional artist, however, I get so mad at the folks who often criticize digital art for "bEiNg ToO eAsY" and "lEtTiNg ThE cOmPuTr Do AlL tHe wOrK". It's like... have you even opened an art program, my dude? I'm really bad when it comes to using ink and pens, because I have a shaky hand and it also gives me more cramp than when I'm colouring with pencils; it's part of why I have never participated in Inktober (the other reason is because seeing everyone elses cool artwork daily made me feel insecure lol). The same can be said with digital; lining in digital art has always been a pain for me, but I do love playing around and colouring with the brushes. (Maybe I just like colouring, idk lol) Nowadays though, I mostly use digital art to fix my art to make it look nice on a website. Also I've seen way too many people call it "cheating" when people fix their traditional drawings digitally, and all I have to says is: if you want to make a website or a digital portfolio for your art, you have to digitize your traditional work. To make it look clean for websites and digital portfolios and the like, you may need to use Photoshop (or any other photo editing program) to: (1) fix the colours a bit to match how they look if you where to see the piece physically (because they can become washed out on a scanner; if they don't, great) and; (2) remove any marks that your work may gain in the scanning process. I could be wrong, but this is something I learned in University and it's stuff I've carried with me for a good few years now. Tl dr: Traditional Art and Digital Art are both valid forms of art, and tradtional artists need to learn to use photoshop if they want to make a digital portfolio or website. PS; Sorry for rambling, I feel like my point in this comment was all over the place lol xD

YES to all of this. It sucks that inking cramps your hand so much bc i know how amazing your art is 😭 and it doubly sucks with comparing to other artists. Social media just doesn't want anyone to be happy with what they make. It's so silly that ppl get up in arms about retouching pictures bc??? Literally every magazine ever does that?????? All forms of art are valid and we should respect them, tysm for sharing ur thoughts 💚

When somebody mixes "practice makes perfect" and "draw everyday" in a drawing plan (or in this case drawing challenge),you are on your way to make an artistic burn out cake with drawing insecurities as topping. As you mentioned, not all artist can draw everyday, let alone having the mental strength to stick on one specific prompt and at the same time try to get out of the comfort zone at the same time. I personally think that the key for a healthy participation to such lengthy challenges, is to find something that will make you return continuously to the challenge (for example, if someone's loves drawing shera they should add shera characters in the challenge), and try to mix it with the daily prompts! Also, it will be best to keep things simple, so the artist won't grow tired within the first 3 days. Last but not least, breaks are important! It's okay if you fall behind a few days, the fact that you had fun and learned something is all that matters! I apologize for the lengthy comment, i really did enjoy your video. Inktober is a very interesting case of what went wrong, not only with the creator of it, but with the whole community as a whole! Keep up the amazing work, Fiona! 💙💚

As far as I understood, the main goal of inktober was to draw directly in ink, as in, to remove the option of erasing or sketching, so an artist would try to plan and rethink the way they do their art since there is no going back. When I heard that, I thought: Huh, makes sense, and it is challenging. But then people sketched before inking and it was a mess and then digital art was part of inktober and many cried because there was no ink. I mean, I got it,but assuming the challenge would remain the same would be stupid in an ever changing and evolving art community and as long as people were having fun I didn't really mind.

I’ve gotten tired of Inktober. I’ve since done other October challenges including my new favorite of the bunch OCTober which is just drawing original characters all month which I much prefer as is anyways.

Quick question, would shaming people that use digital art just because of the bs reasons be considered ableist?
