Conincidentally, my mother-in-law is an archivist with a particular interest in preserving digital media and ngl, it's not looking great, especially with the new idea that any content on the internet can be scraped to train AI, folks are getting more cagey with their data which is totally understandable. Sites like The Way Back Machine are super useful tools for internet historians, so like, the best way to help preserve these sorts of services is actually to donate when they do fundraisers (you know, like Wikipedia)
@SMNFXCN
@SMNFXCN 19 күн бұрын
Internet Archive is far more deserving of donations, they are constantly hit with lawsuits and paying for storage to archive all of the data that gets uploaded all the time is expensive. Wikipedia deserves donations too, but they beg for money so that they do not have to resort to ads. They are swimming in money but want to keep the site up for generations.

Since the HBO Cartoon Purge was mentioned, here's a Fun Fact about it: When HBO removed a bunch of Cartoon Network shows, they somehow forgot a single episode of Uncle Grandpa, which caused the internet to meme about Uncle Grandpa being one of the most powerful beings in animation (which as someone that watched the show a lot as a kid, he absolutely is).

That's a logically iffy saying I don't think people are thinking about critically, and I wish people would use full statements over zingers to make their points. It's pedancy. Simply, just because you can't _own_ a thing you buy doesn't mean it's now automatically up for piracy. Just because an act isn't _stealing_ doesn't automatically mean it's not unethical/illegal/wrong. Better arguments consider who has the rights to the IP, what they lose when you infringe on their copyright/service, and what harm comes (socially, economically, emotionally) when services _that are NOT OURS_ are being used in ways the IP owner doesn't consent to. If someone wants to pirate from Disney, it's generally illegal and pretty decidedly unethical. But the harm that comes to "Disney," writ large, is (in practice) negligible. Not without any harm: people, human artists, who are not money-grubbers and would not exploit access to their art on their own, may not want to see their designs utilized outside of Disney. We can assume they don't care, but you don't know until they explicit say or you explicitly ask. And this saying absolutely doesn't apply to smaller artists who get paid for every use of their art, performance, etc. This saying would further kill voice acting as a career. Voice actors don't sell their voice or even their lines, in perpetuity, very easily or very cheaply. And it's contracted for each voice actor making a living for a period of time for a very specific purpose. Using that performance and likeness outside of what they agree to invites all kinds of nonconsented use that makes a paying career as a voice actor unsustainable. That same logic would apply to any artist in a time where many works of art can be duplicated. I'm just saying the folks using this saying aren't really thinking about it. And folks who are very anti-piracy and have a decent grasp of logic would tear it to shreds. As they ought to, because I don't want folks defending reasonable access to art and rights of artists to use such an easily refutted banner.

I paid for Prime Video just so that I could watch Hazbin Hotel, as I was more than willing to pay to see it. But apparently because I'm on Linux Amazon Prime refused to give me the show in anything other than Standard Definition (480p). Apparently this is because in order to have the option of viewing the content in HD (which I was paying for) they wanted Windows or Mac to certify to them that I wasn't trying to pirate their content. Apparently because Linux actually gives me full control over what happens on my computer I am by default a pirate to them that wants to rip their content. And ironically they pushed me towards piracy by giving me such substandard service. I made sure to play each episode on Prime after I had watched the HD version in order to show on their analytics that the show is why I subscribed, and I paid for my subscription for as long as the show ran. But I can honestly say I am never going to pay for Prime Video again. Their automatic distrust of me for caring about my privacy really rubbed me the wrong way.

Piracy is an accessibly issue. If you can't get something ether for it being too expensive or too hard to obtain, people will find a way to get it. If you make things easy to gain legally, people will gain it legally due to it being the easiest solution. (Great vid btw)

This is what Gabe Newell proved with his commentary about "Piracy is a Service Issue" and why video game piracy on PC has dropped since 2004 as more and more games have been made available through Steam which has regular seasonal discounts and sales to encourage people to buy games they might not be comfortable paying full price for but still have a refund window in case the game isn't for them (though the refund window part has been a bit of a legal issue Steam didn't always service properly, taking an Aussie court case from the ACCC to get the current refund policy).

I keep thinking of the Xwitter comment that someone who works on The Casagrandes made about "just support the official releases & buy the merch/DVDs, cuz piracy is inherently evil", and one of the first QTs was the creator of Infinity Train pointing out how he's had to rely on pirated rips to get a copy of his own series to keep & that 90% of animated shows don't get merch anymore, let alone home releases for repeat viewing. There's no guarantee that an official release will be available at all, let alone indefinitely, and it's extremely depressing. Anyway, I look forward to a return to prominence of the Bootleg DVD Guys at cons; they already allowed me to own the full series of Megas XLR (which is another banished-via-tax-writeoff series), and I'm sure they're hard at work now filling the void left by legitimate markets yet again.

I think every worker of every show and animation needs to learn about the Toy Story 2 situation, how the only reason it was saved was because someone kept a physical copy of it at home It is so, so incredibly important for any worker, if they are able, to save and archive physical or digital copies of what they work on during multiple stages of production. I've never had great qualms about piracy - I get the hypothetical argument around it, but I also engage in it. What I would instead question about how we do things now are: 1. The producer-consumer premise of media production. The reason why piracy is "harmful" has to do with how we tiptoe around the consumer model, and we can't see another way out of it because that is how post-war capitalism functions. This is NOT just about the shows we like - it's also the plight of the so-called "iPad kids", who learn to use electronics just in the sense of launching apps and receiving dopamine. Anything resembling genuine computer literacy is taught only in a professionalized context, as if media were a priesthood. This era makes a lot of production moves that only make sense on a spreadsheet, versus thinking about culture in terms of sharing wisdom. 2. The role of media productions in a consumer society. The reason why investment can appear for TV and movies has something to do with the narratives they create at a national level, and to some extent, internationally as well. When a "prestige film" engages with some Important Topic, it's drawing on the energy for that discussion to be had at a national level. It follows up on preceding political narratives, and it allows critics to create derivative commentary about it. Hollywood wants "Barbenheimers" because those indicate a successful normalization of a political outlook - they are the kind of projects that powerful people will fund. Simpler entertainment like the MCU also isn't immune to this: it's made to be non-challenging, so the productions fall into a formula intended to let everyone pat themselves on the back. When we engage in piracy both of these things are challenged. The content lacks exclusivity: it isn't a thing we "reward" ourselves with in the sense of putting up hard-earned money. And it gives us more opportunities to contrast the views of the past with those of the present, to compare, for example, how James Bond was portrayed in the 1960's versus today. Often the critics celebrate progress in media, but then you go through the record and see that actually, nothing happened after the last five "breakthroughs". Piracy is both easier and harder now depending on what you're doing. There is a lot more spam and more aggressive attempts to control your machine than in the past, when the most that happened was a virus that caused some data loss. But it's also easy to reach pirate streams and torrents for many popular things. I would describe it as the world going through a phase where everything became "knowable" for a while - when it was all there, posted on social media or a streaming service, but the investment climate was still pushing money into the system - and then the gradual decay into darkness that has taken hold lately as the economic model failed and no savior technology is allowing it to be rehabilitated, in fact, it seems to be accelerating. It's a very good time to be engaged in a DIY community and express yourself in a non-professionalized way. I've found a space with retrocomputing since there is a new crop of hardware mixing old and new chips together to create computers that would have been the envy of any 80's hobbyist - open designs that can be completely understood, unlike an iPad. That kind of knowledge is worth preserving and passing down.

I very much appreciate the context here. It deserves more of a reply than I'll give it, but I do agree that anti-piracy folks (I'm generally "anti-piracy," in theory, but most media is produced by large entities with resources and teams that could not create larger works of art by themselves or buy art to distribute made by other teams of creatives who may have different opinions on if they want their art to be accessible and to what extent.) ...I agree most anti-piracy folks lump "creators" with "owners" and do not discuss harm and financial compensation when determining what the cost is to the people who made the art. So something made by a solo artist (say, a voice actor) being used in a way they didn't consent to being pirated for AI really burns me. I really don't care if someone pirates a show/movie/game owned and copyrighted by a big company especially if the creatives who aren't rich don't get meaningful royalties. I think you mention it, but it's weird that we've embedded a social good into a capitalist economic structure. It's kinda necessary, because having a benefactor, private or governmental, restricts artistic freedom. But so does working for a company or even being beholden to an audience that only wants to hear you play "that one song" and won't go to your concert if you never play "that one song" even though you don't want to always play "that one song." In practice, I'm against most piracy. But I feel like the art that is consumed and known by most people is "fine" to pirate, because it bypasses a lot of the qualms I have with consent and compensation (because the people who _created_ the art don't have the copyrights to the art and can no longer be paid for the art.)

@@Socioromanticism Yep. Most of the games I pirate is not available for purchase anymore. Pricing on the 2nd hand market is often so ridiculously expensive it is straight up unreasonable to expect someone to buy the game used. PS3 and 360 games are often quite cheap on the 2nd hand market so I tend to buy them instead of pirating. The same goes for a bunch of PS2 and Xbox games, though it is becoming more expensive. Console generations before that tends to be quite expensive. Anything Nintendo will be sold at full price or higher no matter what. Piracy has become the best method of digital preservation when the big companies don't bother to do it and I believe copyright law needs a reform.

The same you said about TV shows and movies applies to music and videogames as well, with music being the one that's probably still the easiest one to distribute across multiple services. I really can't blame anyone for pirating these things anymore, especially with raising prices for these services but if I can, I still try to support the creators by buying a legit copy of the media I want. Funny enough, video on demand services started as cheaper and better alternative to cable and sat TV. Now, it's essentially the same except online.

It was treated so horribly on so many levels, from book 5 being scrapped for not having a "child entry point" ( when it was already supposed to be approved under the initial contract! the script was done! ), to the execs at CN ghosting Owen Dennis when he tried to appeal, to the lack of marketing and official merchandise for it, the refusal to put books 3 and 4 on DVD, to finally it being taken off of HBO Max /and/ places like ITunes and Amazon Prime Video. The only way left for it to be bought officially now is the DVDs, and even then you can only get book 1 and book 2. And there's no telling how long those will still be accessible.

So I found my old PS3 and i wanted to build a collection of games, but the thing is, NONE of the games on the ps3 that are being officially sold on the storefront are actually worth buying due to them being remastered on other platforms, and the ones that ARE worth playing are listed as "Disc Only." I would love to support the developers but due to the state of the storefront i really cant, and thats before we get into the matter of who the money is going to because sometimes the studio that makes the games has been long defunct. That leaves me with 2 options, either find a physical copy of a game on ebay thats often overpriced and/or in bad condition (and thats if the game had a physical release) OR go on a website and download the files and play it direct on the console with the console acting as a glorified emulator, and for the past 6 months, thats what ive been doing. Is it piracy, legally yes, And i dont regret it one bit.

While I don't mind using any piracy website/app for consuming media, my biggest complaint regarding these mediums is how they almost always advertise +18 websites. For a 21 year old man in the states, I can get around this easily, but I have a strong hunch that stuff like this might drive away users who are 13 or under.

An example to why piracy is the only option: Disney+ came to my country 2 years ago. Before that, the only way to re-watch Disney movies legally was to have them on CD, and forget about their new shows like Owl House, there was no way to watch that legally. Another problem with this is that when a streaming service has a show, the others won't have it. If the streaming service that has a show is only available in North America, then the rest of the world is going to have to pirate it if they want to watch it. The services provide no choice.

The restrictions are the main issue, it's funny to think how much money they miss out on by not selling to people whom WOULD pay for it if that were an option, only for those consumers to instead: 1. Get it for free or 2. Pay money to someone else. Though. of course other factors can be at play. For example, the first four episodes of Doctor Who (classic) are not available on BBC as the son of the writer is basically holding it hostage. People seem to be actively encouraging the piracy of these episodes (the guy holding them certainly hasn't garnered any support, quite the opposite in fact), I wouldn't even be surprised if the BBC intentionally leaves it in their blind spot.

Netlfix is available with a nice library and that is why I would be happy to sub. But then If netflix decide to get rid of a show aka final space for example then it will be lost media and gone forever. Infinity train had the same fate. Also the reason why I hate also netflix is that there is one nigerian show produced by nigerian and with nigerian cast, and not even available on disney+ nigeria. There is the City hunter anime that I want to watch the original version but I couldn't find any legal way to get it. Even the pirate streaming services doesn't have it. And at least for me it is lost media.

Really? Wow! Haven’t seen City Hunter, but I’ve heard a lot about it from fans. I would think at least the pirates would have it through fansubs from long ago. If that’s true, that’s horrible! If it has so many fans from now and long ago, it should be available at least with the pirates. Edit: I was able to find it in English subs. Idk if it will help, but when I have trouble to find certain titles. I try to look up alternative names for the series. Like its main English name, the Japanese one, any other particular titles that might come up. Sometimes checking MyAnimeList for all the different titles helps. I also like Wikipedia. I was able to find the series on a site that has both anime and cartoons. I’m not sure if that will be enough to help. Without actually saying the name of the site. I want the site to remain up. I don’t want anyone out there to get ideas of shutting it down because I said the name. If you are able to get to that site from your country or with a VPN, you might be able to watch City Hunter. It is through an unofficial(non-legal) type site though. I guess, with this one, in particular, maybe the initials will be alright. The initials are w c o s . The site has been going by its initials lately. Every time I’ve typed the name into the address bar, I’ve always managed to be taken to the site though.

I fully believe that bar the most extreme of edge cases, any random pirate will have far more respect for a property than its IP holder. Media preservation is gonna be made far more difficult than needed, for as long as art is viewed as a financial asset rather than a cultural one. And I really don't think we'll properly treat it as the latter, as a society, as long as it's considered the former. So piracy is low-key made *cooler* when it disrespects the ip rights of evil megacorporations. _koff koff umg koff koff disney_ Profitability will _never_ be a good measure of significance, quality, cultural relevance... _anything_ that matters to _people._ In other words... yar har fiddle-dee-dee :3

The even worse is most of them are out of expiration and removed without proper preparation within one month in due to copyright. In most cases, people and I ended up finding good live actions or cartoons by relying on random pirate websites and try to ignored tons of pornography and gambling advertisements. Who knows these websites could give inspirations for some artists even after the end of humanity?

6:50 I know you just explain how people felt about films back in the day why did they put more effort into the preservation of those films back then. But just hearing that data deliberately destroyed them destroying a huge bit of film history just because they couldn't do a good job at preserving it for some reason heard a piece of my soul. Cuz I feel like when it comes to media, every single last bit of it should be preserved whether they be movies, TV shows, books, music, and even fucking video games. Hell, that last one I'm trying to do my own contribution of preservation just by getting footage of said media. Because it's easier to get away with recording that and it's not considered piracy. Mainly because you physically cannot pirate a game like that and it's not even considered piracy for video games. I mean you can't even control anything. No, this is a different case scenario when you get into story-based choice games. Word controls don't matter, gameplay doesn't matter, and it's all about the story. Meaning you could just watch it on KZfaq and don't need to ever play the game. Ethically and morally complicated, but for the most part at least you're well preserved and nobody's ever going to forget about them. Did I specifically mention video games because the reason why hearing about films just deliberately being destroyed and no further attempts to preserve them hurt my solar pit is because this is already happening to video games as well. Not even recently but today. I remember hearing about an article that was going over a percentage of video games that were basically lost Media or in some sort of copyright limbo due to the dissolvement of their original company. Leaving them pretty much no longer available to anybody. Back when I was a little kid during the Xbox 360 and PS3 days, there were tons and tons and tons of games. And unfortunately at least 12% of those titles now are gone forever or in a copyright limbo. For some people who don't know, this can be way worse than a company just voting a title and not bringing it out until it's ready to go into the public domain where they registered the copyright again and see if they can make a review 20 years later. They're kind of preserving that media even though they're not purposely not trying to. And when the day comes to hold on to it long enough to where it ends up in the public domain and they can't register the copyright anymore. And they will have no choice but to get rid of it into the public domain. Thus it will not be lost media. But unfortunately copyright limbs can force the media to be lost in time. The only exception mean for anybody who still has a physical or even digital copy out there. Because those are the two next best back to preserve certain media. The third one being footage at least in the case of video games. Because you can't preserve a multiplayer games along with their servers and a full lobby of players. And there are only a few games out there with accessible multiplayer matches and maps without even a single player beyond the host like call of duty. Where you can explore the map without a single person in your lobby. But of course that will just be an empty Map and no match would be going on. And for those of you who didn't know because I doubt you can do this with the new call of duty games. But back in the day it didn't matter if you didn't have internet connection or not, you can actually still happen to a map just to explore it. So even if you are physically incapable of hopping into a match, you can at least see what the maps look like in the design layout. No, I will say this when it comes to preservation of media that at least nowadays preserving a book, A movie, or a TV show whether digitally or on a DVD as much easier nowadays than preserving a video game if you don't have the physical copy or ROM. Yes those who have their physical addition to digital versions as well. But again it's much easier to preserve something like that when you can just record it and have another copy version of it or burn it onto a DVD. And heck, between those two mediums, music is even easier nowadays to preserve as long as somebody is willing to upload it to the internet with full lyrics, and don't care that they get a copyright claim. And for those two mediums it's easy to transfer to an in storage device as well as those two mediums being very accessible and playable at any time as long as you have a media player that's compatible with their format. Unfortunately though the same cannot be said about video games. You either need to emulate the original council it was on if it's digital or actually have the original physical device if it's a physical copy. It has a reverse compatible digital version of it within their servers that's playable. But that means they would actually have a digital copy in their system that would allow you to play it the second you put it to the disc. And if that feature is still a thing now, because beyond that it still needs to be within their servers to even work for a specific video game. And with my general frustrations on media preservation aside especially with video games, at the end of the day I still think every last piece of media ever made by a human being should be preserved whether it's there from america, japan, europe, or literally anywhere from any part of the world no matter what language it is or what style. Every book, movie, TV show, documentary, video game, scroll, painting, piece of artwork, piece of drawing ever made by I need every human being ever should be stuck into this massive digital and physical library available to the masses. Or better yet a museum library hybrid. And it has to be partially digital that way it's accessible to everybody around the world. But still a physical place where people go in to get physical books, other forms of physical media, and maybe even make their own contributions like hey, here's his DVD nobody's heard about. This film was almost lost to time. Burn it onto your servers. Heck, libraries are already storing movies, TV shows, and video games right next to their books. Libraries are pretty much already doing their part to contribute to Media preservation. They should be funded so they can do a greater, do it more, and do it even harder. Especially with media just becoming lost the time nowadays very easily just because the copyright holders doesn't want to deal with it anymore. And personally I think all libraries around the world should start having servers if they're able to fund them that way their library collection can go digital and become accessible for everybody around the world. Not to mention this will give us a reason to not even have to Pirate anything if it's just available at our local or digital libraries. And I will give more people a reason to have a library card. Go pick up it a copy of your favorite film, a video game you never heard of, and a book series based on that video game all that the same library. Maybe we'll bring back DVD video game until it's just for the library so they can keep on funding that preservation effort. Yes you can get stuff from the library for free but there's a limited amount of time you're allowed to have it. Maybe for $3 you can rent an entire DVD or video game from the library for an entire week. Just pay up front to borrow it for even longer especially if copies are limited. Just need it for a day or two, no need to pay just get that copy. Want it for longer. Then they'll charge you. But if you just don't bring it back then that charge will become your late fee or return fee anyways. If you held on to it long enough. I know it seems weird to come up with a way for libraries to charge for the media they preserve, but again we're talking about helping to fund their preservation efforts and I'm trying to find a way to make it work where they can sell a lot of things to be borrowed for free but for that limited amount of time. Plus hopefully it'll make sure that people are more likely to take care of this media and not destroy it or lose it. Especially if it's harder to get a brand new copy to replace it.

Got to this one late, but good video as always, Apollo. My thoughts on this are a bit nuance, or at least I like to think they are. But in terms of piracy, I did it when I was younger, and not anymore, I try my hardest to watch my media legenimatly. Here's my thing on terms of lost media I feel like there is maybe an argument for pirating it, especially if no money is to be made anymore. However, especially with animation, money is tight, and a LOT goes into production first and pays checks later. Eventually, that lost money from pirating will affect that budget. I know we like to point at a billion dollar company and say we'll you should have enough to pay, there's criticism to be had there, but bills still need to be paid and I have a hard time believing people would stop even if the problems were fixed. I would just worry that encouraging pirating even if from a creator will backlash. Whether the creator is paid before or after the release of a show, movie ,etc. Hell, there are plenty of people now that pirate things even with it being perfectly available. Now, this next bit might be a bit cold, but streaming platforms, games , movies at the BIG XD theater, are luxuries and as they advance, add new tech or try new styles it will get more expensive. Doesn't matter what economic form it's under. Media will just becomes more expensive. If you're paying for these things, you've probably got it good or okay or at least grew up wealthier, middle class even. Companies and their workers are gonna have that higher price tag to accommodate. That especially doesn't matter if the show is good or bad. You're paying for a service. Plus, you can still criticize bad business practices like cheap lootbox tricks in games or companies not giving shows a proper chance, but two things can be true at once. Finally, at the end of the day, make what argument you want getting caught with piracy has legal consequences. I can't stop anyone from pirating. But if you get caught, take it on the chin, and understand you broke a law, there's gonna be punishment no matter what. I care about artist and the art world. Hell, the new indie animators creating new works is a huge step forward. Though I especially wouldn't want their work being pirated as well should they try to profit off it. Sorry for the long post, but those are my thoughts. Say as ya please comments. Just don't be too crazy.
