Three friends go on an adventure to bring an electric Citroen Ami with a maximum speed of 28mph from Amsterdam to the UK...and we have 12 hours to do it!

Nice. It reminds me of my little 1957 BMW Isetta that I bought for £25 in 1966. It did everything I wanted on just a single cylinder 275cc. engine.

It was almost like a military exercise on to enemy grounds to retrieve the Ami. I'm so impressed that you had the balls to go and go get it. Looking forward to the full review.

I love this comment! It really did feel like that: the covid regulations make everything sooo much much complicated. We spent hours the previous night printing out all the necessary paperwork!

@@MorselsAndMotors I'm also guessing it makes the purchase of the Ami feel a bit more satisfying. After all anyone can just rock up at a dealership and drive home. Most importantly your one of the first owners of an Ami in the UK. Kind of very envious, great work!

It is just my iPhone 11 with just a bog-standard phone mount. I was surprised at the quality of the image stabilisation!

Ordered mine in late Sept ‘21 with a £250 deposit on line .. due in UK ‘Spring’ but will probably be May/June and pricing well over £7k - closer to 8 with OTR costs added.. however looking forward to it …Bill in Sussex

I've put £250 down as well but if it's anything like that expensive they can take a running jump. It's £5,300 in France and it needs to be near that to justify the cars limitations.

Out of curiosity, what made you decide to import one when the UK version is out in a few months? But rear view mirrors, you can get ones that stick to the glass on Amazon for £15, though there's a third party company in France that sells a super wide one that covers the entire metal bar above the windscreen.

Oh that’s interesting about the mirror, thanks, I’ll have a look. It’s actually not for me, which I hadn’t realised I hadn’t made clear in the video. It’s for a museum my friend works with, and it had already been bought by them months ago

@@MorselsAndMotors No worries, there's a guy on KZfaq who makes/sells loads of interesting mods for the Ami, stuff like a sunshade and more robust handles Etc. But cool, is it an actual exhibit for the museum, or something from to run around in? I'm friends with the Cambridge Computer Museum and they're forever grabbing Sinclair C5's :D

Oh yes I’ve noticed you have one in your car. How do you deal with no sunshade? I find the sun is almost always in my eyes, and I’m in wintry Cambridge not the sunny French Riviera!

It's hard to answer as the car was bought by a museum and isn't going to be permanently in the UK

I'd love to hear more about the Ami before it gets put in a museum. Would you mind normalising the volume on the next video though? I'm having to turn the volume up to hear you talking then down as the music's much louder.

Yes I'm sorry about the volume issue - I edited the video in a huge hurry, and didn't have a change to give it a final check on the sound levels before uploading.

There's loads of accessories - I saw one in France last week with roof bars, so I'm sure a roof box probably exists too!

Check out Out Of Spec Review, they have a video about Ami. I belive that one was from the R&D. It was able to do way more power, and maybe 80 km/h

There is a way to remove the software limit but its ill advised as the car has a habit of toppling on high speed turns

@@giannicolamatteo8155 in the review video from Fift Gear, they managed to get on two wheesl doing a sharp turn, they said at "10 mph". The Ami is not designed to do sharp turns at speed. If a cat, or other small animals run in front of you, you might want to continue head on.

I quite fancied an Ami, but Citroen dealers near me are all too far for the car's limited range or require using motorways. However, when it's sold as a Fiat Topolino, my problem is solved! I can use it locally and buy something older to use for any longer journeys. Since it has a top speed of 28mph, it only risks speeding fines in 20mph zones, so my pristine newly renewed over 70 licence remains points-free.

wait...so the one time trip from the dealership to your house is the problem? can't you just load it on a tow truck? you might be the first person to ask(the particular company) for such a service but i am pretty sure they won't say no if you are willing to pay their rate.

@@yvs6663 If it were only a "one time trip" I'd agree, but servicing, warranty work or rectification would need the car to be transported to and from the dealership. As it is, my initial enthusiasm for the Ami has waned simply because the build quality seems poor. OK it's a cheap car, but I don't feel it's the car I really want, or need.

not sure what the laws are where you are from but here, a person riding a moped with the same top speed as the Ami in the bike lane(specially one that is seperated from the main road) would be getting a ticket if they were seen by the police. so i doubt driving it in bike paths is legal. also, i was expecting someone to attempt to actually DRIVE the Ami long distance, not just load it on the truck.

You could have gotten a ticket for driving on the cycle path! That's not allowed... Even with 45 kms/h you'll have to drive it on the normal road. And sometimes it's not allowed too. So that makes driving a car like this in Holland really difficult...

Oh hello fellow Dutchman, pointing fingers and telling other people off. 😘 Police is currently on strike and will definitely not write a ticket for a French registered electric quadricycle with two Brits in it. Actually I told them to use the cycle path anyway, if it was wide enough and had a blue round sign with both bicycle and moped.

I'd love to know how safe they are in a crash and if the driver and passenger will survive it at its top speed. No air bag and no crumple zone so no thank you.

Rather than yet more bloody stupid whizzy high-tech luxury EV toys for the Apple-Dyson-Tesla brigade, it'd be nice if a big-name manufacturer produced something like this with a 45mph top speed, 150 miles of range, and a price tag of £5,000. That'd transform transport for the masses.

It'd be nice but unrealistic. Napkin maths say an efficient EV getting 5 miles per kwh would need 30kwh of battery at a price of 4000 USD. That's optimistic, building a pack adds costs over raw cells. If you're okay with 28mph an ebike can hit the range and price targets.
