“Love’s “Forever Changes” is one album that everyone should hear. It’s the type of album that gets better with repeated listening, not worse. Why it wasn’t a massive hit is a mystery, because when it came out in November, 1967 it had the sound that fit perfectly with the times. This album was an instant classic in England and most of Europe and Australia, just not in the US for some reason.

MacLean wrote this song but Arthur Lee is the real genius behind Love. 1967 was all about Peace, Love, Do Your Own Thing (Man).... But FC was warning that nothing had really changed & during an era of wild solos & louder noodling music FC was dark visions coupled with outre orchestral backing - what was more radical than singing about the Apocalypse backed by Muzak? It took me 2-3 listens for that to sink in & it hasn't left my playlist in 55 years. "The news today will be the movies for tomorrow..."

This song is so beautifully constructed...and so hauntingly melancholy. In my opinion the composer is taking traditional Flamenco and musically projecting what it would become with the Gypsy Kings, Paco etc 25-30 years later (i.e. trend setting). The lyrics are exceptionally biting and painful...as someone who was dating in 1967 and experiencing the ups and downs of infatuation, love, lust, rejection- it can be overwhelming. Think of the Doors, "Hello I love Won't You Tell Me Your Name"...and compare that to the stanza where the woman is saying she could be in love with ALMOST EVERYONE... but he won't experience that love, acceptance, comfort, warmth: instead he will be alone, isolated, depressed, wanting her, and knowing that she's indifferent to his needs and unlikely to change. The trumpets in the break are from a type of Spanish music called “Pasodoble”, played in bull corridas (in my mind he was the bull and gored by her whimsical unpredictable actions). That really hurts. I think he's laying his soul bare to get her to realize he's in pain, and wants this torture to end...OR - she could stop it by spending time, showing love, reciprocating etc. - but she won't. Loved the way the song ended in a suspension...with the listener wanting a resolution (e.g. major chord) ending-but not getting it! Great song and liked your analysis of the song. All the best! MO

One of the greatest “unknown” albums of all time. A concept album along the lines of The Beach Boys “Pet Sounds”…, with themes of ‘coming of age’, ‘disillusionment’, ‘not fitting in’, ‘loneliness’ and ‘escape’ with an undercurrent theme of observing and being immersed/trying not to get completely sucked into the mid-late ‘60s ‘Sunny California/LA - Rock and Roll drug taking lifestyle- while still enjoying it’s pleasures. Beach Boys= Brian Wilson/Love= Arthur Lee. However if someone told you this album came out in the early ‘90s…, it’s believable. Arthur Lee was FAR ahead of his time with Forever Changes. Listen to the entire album in its original running order. It’s a bit unexpected almost confusing. Listen again, then again…, it’s a grower. Genius work of art. The final song, “You Set The Scene” is IMO, perhaps the finest, most beautiful, uplifting…, song to ever close out a Rock album. God Bless Arthur Lee. And…, how bout the album title…? “Love, Forever Changes”. Get it…? Love (IT) Forever Changes…? Yep.., that was Arthur…. clever eh?

"I said I'd love you forever, but forever changes." Arthur Lee claimed that he heard someone say this to a partner, when the person had "fallen out of love" with said partner. It struck Arthur so much that he chose the phrase for the album title. I don't think it's meant as a celebration of cynicism, but more in a sadly poignant way-- sadness, even in 1967's "Summer of Love," which fits in with the overall sound and themes of the album.

A spectacular track from one of the greatest albums of all time. Forever Changes was Love's third album, but their record label was getting fed up with their drug-fuelled antics, and threatened to bring in a group of session musicians to replace them, to take advantage of having a band with the best possible name in the "Summer of love"... this forced the group to up their game, and they knuckled down to bring in a collection of fantastic songs, including this one by Bryan Maclean. Lead singer and main songwriter Arthur Lee didn't like being sidelined, but even he had to admit this song was a classic, and agreed to it being the first single and lead track on the LP, though he was sadly very begrudging in his respect for Maclean, right up until his death... Strangely, though the single and album basically flopped in the US, they were both successes in the UK, and the album has a big cult following... it's said that everywhere else in the UK, boys get given a bike for the 14th birthday, but in Liverpool they get a copy of Forever Changes! :-)

After losing my parents, Mama Lizzie, Bryan, and Maria took me into their family. Bryan and his half-sister, Maria, each had a Mexican grandmother, and you can hear the influences of the culture in some of their music. The key word to the meaning of the song is the word, "or". According to Bryan's mother, Lizzie, Bryan was implying you could end up alone, or something else might come along. Bryan was an amazing singer, musician, and songwriter. After he left Love, he continued to write songs. He wrote a song, "Don't Toss us Away," which was included in his sister's first album, which was later recorded by country singer Patty Loveless. I find it interesting that this came up on my YT feed on the 25th anniversary of his passing.

🎺Perhaps it was the Herb Alpert influence, but for some reason, Latin sounding trumpet solos were really a "thing" in 1967. They also pop up in The Byrds' "So You Want To Be A Rock 'n Roll Star," Tommy James & The Shondells' "I Like The Way" and The Mamas & Papas' "Boys And Girls (Together)." As has been pointed out countless times, this whole album is a feast for the ears from beginning to end. Like The Doors' first two albums (also on Elektra), every song is relatively short, except for the last one, which is far more cinematic in scope. I'll tell you in advance that the next song, "A House Is Not A Motel" is a real psychedelic word salad along the same lines as "Along Comes Mary" and "Incense & Peppermints." Scrutinizing the lyrics in order to find some sort of hidden meaning might prove to be an exercise in frustration, as they are essentially an LSD induced stream-of-consciousness tone poem.

Just stumbled across your channel. You are the first person I've seen to go this far away from top 40 songs. Major Props to you. The rest of the album is equally enjoyable. If you like complex lyrics, there is nothing better than Leonard Cohen. if Bob Dylan hadn't won the Nobel, it would have been Cohen. "The Partisan", "Suzanne", or "Who by Fire" are nice starters for him. Also, "Hallelujah" that he wrote. If you like slamming hard rock, try some Wishbone Ash. Again, I've never heard anyone react to them although they were probably the best guitar band ever. They used double guitars instead of a lead and rhythm. If it's hard and fast you want, put on a neck-brace and try "Phoenix". If you want to hear two guitars chasing each other up and down the scales, try "Leaf and Stream".

@@georgewodicka4839 Good question. At the time, Love never really toured much and stayed in California. The Rolling Stones caught some of their shows and there was some question of them influencing each other (Love's She Comes In Colours and The Stones' She's A Rainbow for instance). My guess is that The Moodies and Love didn't directly influence each other but were both caught up in post-Sgt. Pepper advancements.

This may sound bad but I've been listening to the UFO version for years and had heard the original but I forgot that the UFO version was a cover. Not saying the original version is bad in any way but it's definitely very different from the UFO version.

Elektra was one of the three "major" all-acoustic folk labels, the other two being Folkways and Vanguard. The first electric music Electra published were "Paul Butterfield Blues Band" and "The Doors". The "Lost Paul Butterfield Blues Band" recordings -- available as CD -- is essential. "The Doors" are a depressing bore.

Neil Young was set to produce this record but Neil just Can't keep his commitments. Love Forever Changes is my favorite record of all time. Other great songs from this album are Maybe the People Will be the Times..." and House is not a Hotel but almost every song is good. The Wall is my least favorite album and I'd rather be alone again or..
