I'm so excited to play this. Riven is, in my opinion, the greatest game Cyan ever made. It's certainly one of my all time favorites. I still play through it every few years.

I like how this pretty much completely preserved the art-direction and the atmosphere of the original. Doesn't really feel like a re-imagining of the original or something, more like the way the original was always meant to be played.

@@gabrielwolffe oh god, same. I still have my original Riven CD ROMs in the paper sleeves. There's no way I can play the original but I can't bring myself to get rid of them.

@@ViviFuchs Ditto that. I came into the series on URU, and I still have my CDs for the whole collection too. I don't even mind that I had to buy all of them a second time on Steam, and I kind of wish Cyan had held a Kickstarter for this so I could have helped out in some small way.

Exceedingly excited for this. The previews have looked spectacular. I suspect that Riven, as a fully realised and cohesive world, will transfer significantly better than Myst to a realtime 3D experience (the smaller, disjointed, sandbox/toybox nature of which always felt a tad uncanny valley in the remakes to me - but that’s subjective). Riven holds such a special place in my heart and personal history. (But please please please include a colour blind mode this time around. Accessibility isn’t optional anymore.)

New walkway, machine in the middle gone or modified? Access to dome is now via a lift instead of walkway perhaps? I keep spotting these little differences in the videos, gonna make it interesting. The other recently posted video of the town in Riven had an extra building that isn't there in the original.

Loving the previews! I hope there are video settings that let users imitate the cinematic look of the animations in the original. Framerate, motion blur-I can't place it, but something about the 1997 original still looks like it was shot on film, despite being entirely digital.

It happened Riven to be the first game in the series I played, as a teenager. I never managed actually to "overcome" the experience. Still haunts me to this day, I am 39 years old. Unique, UNPARRALLED. It gives me goosebumps to see this project.. I would never imagine that I would ever comment on the "remake" of Riven. Especially on a channel of the creators themselves. How cool is that? Once lost in Riven, forever lost in Riven.

And don’t forget Richard (Vanderwende). He was key for making Riven into what it became, and as far as I understand he’s key into what Riven will become now. Not to downplay Rand and Robyn’s role, or any of the other team members’, but Cyan didn’t reach out to him for nothing. And yeah, Cyan can’t be thanked enough for having produced a game like Riven, and in 1997 no less!

@@rknowling No problem, and no sweat. Everybody makes mistakes. That includes me. I just thought it fitting to put Richard Vanderwende into the mix. It doesn't mean, the others are not important though, the Team is bigger than just the 3 of them, and without them they also wouldn't be able to pull it off. We shouldn't forget that either. Just saying ... Love and peace ... ❤ And thank you Cyan, all of you, for taking up this enormous task. Honestly, I believed this would never happen, and I'm so happy it does now after all.

Interesting decision to show off such a late-game area as a preview. Makes me wonder if perhaps its no longer as late-game as it was in the original. Also, wow, that area below the dome looks amazing, and I'm really curious why there appears to be a book pedestal there (I hope that's not replacing entering the smaller domes, though admittedly I have been wondering how that would be accomplished in VR). The squinting eye looking thing is delightfully terrifying as well.

It's not a book pedestal. In the original, it was a pipe diagram, I believe.

@jonathangriffith5699 In the original, the walkway didn’t continue towards the center of the dome. It stopped at the ring around the dome. That’s the main difference from what we can see from this preview, apart from all of the elaborate details.

That area was not so late game, you could get there even before you ever visited Ghen's lab (which I think I did on my first playthrough)

Will this game have different levels of difficulty? Options like "Story" for those who want to focus on the narrative, "Normal" for the original experience, and "Expert" where many clues are omitted, requiring more discovery and sleuthing.

I was actually starting to wonder something similar, like will there be an “original” mode for those who want to play the original version in an modern, upgraded way, and a sort of “extended” mode, with a new story, new puzzles, and possibly even randomization, sort of generating new puzzles on every new play. And I’m still wondering if, and how they are going to integrate this into the bigger D’ni story picture, like some kind of integration into Myst Online. Even though some say, that doesn’t make sense at all, with which I partly agree. After all, this IS still part of the original story … 🤔

Oh looking at this, I'm curious how they solved the puzzle where you have to lift the bridge up to become the stairs and then maneuver around to walk up from the other side: in 3D that bridge is gonna lift right in front of you, so why not step straight on it like an elevator. I hope they'll have a solution that doesn't break immersion (like: please don't be an invisible wall).

I'm still wondering how they will render the NPCs in the 3D remake. In the original game they were integrated in the environment, but they were 2D recordings in a 2D environment. Are they going to be 3D models? If yes, I hope they look better than the Firmament one...

As much as I am a sucker for the aesthetic, I prefer the construction of my artisanal monoliths to NOT have a body count, and if one knows how this place works and how much the villain cares for their subjects, one safely assumes this place has a death toll between the Qatar World Cup and Chernobyl.
