First Night Camping in My Woods: Canvas Tent & Woodstove, Hot Tenting, Winter Camping [EPISODE 2]

2 жыл бұрынJoin me as I spend the first night solo winter camping in my woodland. I use a modified canvas polish lavvu tent and a woodstove as a hot tent for this winter camping trip. It's early December and the leaves have fallen from almost all of the trees in my woodland. The air is cold, but fresh. I setup the tent, cut some firewood with the axe and get the woodstove going. I cook up some good food and enjoy the evening listening to the owls and wildlife of my woodland. Thank you for watching!

RECIPE FOR EVENING ONE POT MEAL IN THIS VIDEO:
- 1 x Red Pepper
- 1 x Onion
- 2 x cloves garlic
- 1 x tin chopped tomatoes
- 1 x Spanish Chorizo
- Small amount of chicken stock
- sprinkling of rock salt and a bit of pepper
- HERBS - Dried Thyme, Basil
Lightly fry Onion, garlic and pepper for a few minutes until tender. Add the tin of chopped tomatoes, stir and bring to boil. Slice up Spanish Chorizo into thin pieces (peel off outer layer of sausage if it has it). Stir in to pot. Add herbs, salt, pepper and stock. Stir altogether then let simmer and cook for 30 minutes, lightly stirring every 10 minutes or so. ENJOY!

Tip for the sinuses: Stoke up the stove, close the tent door (with enough ventilation to be safe ofc), and boil a pot of water with some fresh herbs/ aromatics until you can't see the floor any more XD I once took a thermometer into my lavvu and it can get up to about 50 C at the top! Proper woodland sauna!

Enjoying your broadcasts so much! I am 73 years old and did a lot of wild camping when I was young, with the Girl Guides and then the Rangers. Pretty primitive, but superb experiences in the 1960s! It’s great to follow your story now and marvel at your expertise and also the gadgets which are game changing for winter camping - especially the titanium stove. Oh to be young again - but this is the next best thing! Cathy A.

I'm thinking that if you don't have a convenient tree to replace the centre pole, you could make up a tripod that would fit on the outside of your tent and use that as the centre pole -- effectively moving the pole to the outside of the tent. Great video!

I know nothing about setting up a tent, but couldn't you tie a rope between two trees and put the top loop of the rope somewhere in the middle of the rope... Instead of the pole? 💖🌞🌵😷

A happy man. In this too often chaotic world of bad news, too much plastic, consumerism and over consumption, it is truly refreshing to see and share in the joy of someone literally waking up to a new dawn... In a place he has worked hard to get by making hard choices and wise decisions, where he will both give to, and learn from, all that lives and grows there. He knows his time there is finite and that he is an honoured guest. It is an ancient place. With his skills, hard work and stewardship he will do all that he can make it thrive. Good Nz morning Mike. Been waiting for this for a while now. Needs the "Beast from the East" again doesn't it. A bit of the white stuff. Yeah when I first saw your setup, I thought to myself that that was a heck of a sag..I would just chuck a piece of wood under the center pole and raise it. But you've already acknowledged it. Just a little idea I've used when at 75 doing car camping in winter. We call them "Thermettes" ...(fire in the middle, water jacket on the outer,)..set one up, and throw in a decent size spud,partly split with butter wrapped in tinfoil into the coals. Then go ahead prepare your hot tent, and get your stove going. By the time that's done, you'll find that the water in thermette is boiling, cuppa tea and a hot potato ready to eat as a starter and warmer. Love your channel mate. The Polish poncho tent mod is genius Mike, I did this to my one just a few weeks ago, went out and brought a sewing machine and it's a game changer, so much more space. Really enjoying hot tenting now, I have a similar setup, it is just so much nicer being in a heated tent, cooking in a warm environment. Best Polish Lavvu modification in my opinion is the Lavvu centre tarp by Bushcraft Spain - It's the best $170USD you'll ever spend on your Lavvu and it more than doubles the usable space inside the tent - However, with the modifications seen in this video, the modification I've mentioned would no longer work, as it only connects two stock-standard Lavvu halves. It essentially turns your Lavvu into a baker-style tent and the tarp's buttonholes perfectly match up with any of the three Lavvu sizes.

I prefer canvas in a winter tent, especially if it’s heated. But if I’m going to carry it on my back I’m not entirely sure if id want to carry any canvas tent/shelter half system anymore. So heavy! So much wasted space in a pack. Car camping or if I have pack animals, sure, all day long. Flip side is the purpose built lightweight tipi shelters don’t really hold heat as well as the canvas. And they cost quite a bit more. But they fit into 1/4 the size or less & weigh next to nothing.

@@soonerfrac4611 You're exactly right, those silnylon hot tent tipis lose heat very rapidly, within minutes of the fire going out, the tent is freezing again, whereas you don't need to constantly feed your stove with wood in a canvas tent such as a Lavvu...

I like the lavvu mod, makes it even more versatile !!!!! hearing the wildlife is one of my favorite things about camping in the woods. I don't get out as much as I'd like since I don't drive but when I do get a ride to a camp spot it's well worth the wait

That as really made a massive difference in size hasn't it Mike. It's huge inside now pal. Lots of new mods as you say. For me the tension straps on the bottom, the hanging loop and the hook to hold a light on the inside are all fab ideas pal, loved it. I've done a few similar mods to mine. Zips front and back. So it can still be used a 2x ponchos and as a tent. Hanging loop. Zips in the arm holes. Rejigged it all so it not has the same 'wet side' when used as ponch or lavuu. Like the skirt idea. Might have to break out the sewing machine for that. Will need extra thought if keeping it able to be a poncho too.

🇨🇦❤️I’ve been a great fan of John Wyndham all my life and my favourite is The Chrysalids. His book of wonderful short stories, The Seeds of Time, is also one that I’ve read over and over. He was absolutely brilliant. If you’re not familiar with his work, you’ll be doing yourself a great favour by picking up a few of his books.

It looked like the length of your wood varied. One way to keep your logs similar length is compare the ideal length to your boot. Then you'll always have your boot right there to check the length against. Sending lots of love 💖 from sunny 🌞 Arizona 🌵😷

I always used to put a tarp down first after I raked up the area then put my tent on top of the tarp it keeps the tent 20 times dryer than without it. Huge difference you should give it a try.

I remember my dad telling me about a tent that he could wear as a raincoat, and you could put 2 of them together, to make a bigger tent. This was when he was in the Home Guard. So it was very interesting to see what this must have looked like.

Hi Mike You can use a ridge line through the d ring to support your lavoo so it can be hung between to trees 🌳 which will give a bite more shelter. Have fun in your 🪵 catch you later.

It was such a pleasure watching this, you made me smile so many times. You sharpening your ax was so great, i am most of the time the weird one who sharpens his knife on the back of an un glazed ceramic coffee cup. i also was drinking a beer, i cheers with you in spirit! That wood stove in combination with the tent is so cool, also really inconspicuous. I'm so glad I picked up a lavvu when they were still cheap as chips. The value was insane. I used a few cans of water proofing spray on mine and a D&D bath tub style ground sheet and am really quite happy with it as is. But those additions are cool. Looks like a quality job.

Our you could attach the D-ring to a tripod instead of a branch. Could also make a "cot" that's low to the ground, just high enough to get you off the ground but low slung enough to fit in your tent.
