The song was actually recorded and released in 1975. The bass player on this, Bob Daisley, played on the first 3 Ozzy Osbourne solo records, he also wrote a large part of the lyrics on those records. This band was essentially ere initially a "Supergroup".

I had to double check my eyesight when I saw that you were reacting to Rainbow! I saw them back in the day, and Richie Blackmore did like a 45 minute solo. In case you were not aware as you don't seem to have heard of him, he was a founding member of Deep Purple. Hopefully you have heard of them :) Love the variety of reactions you do.

I personal love "Long live Rock'n Roll" and "Lady of the Lake" better. And the have a nice ballad too, named "Rainbow Eyes"

Ah, the mighty Rainbow. Too bad that the mixing was abysmal and they've drowned out Dio's powerful voice. The album version does him more justice. Dio is one of the most iconic rock and metal voices, he followed Ozzy in Black Sabbath, he had his own band, DIO, which was really great. He normally is considered as being part of the "holy trinity", consisting of ronnie James Dio (obviously), Iron Maiden's Bruce Dickinson and Judas Priest's Rob "Metal God" Halford. BTW. Dio is pretty much responsible for introducing THE heavy metal hand sign with two fingers extended from a fist. Also his voice really aged very well, gave him a natural raspiness that fit the music he was making very well. One thing to react to would be Black Sabbath - Heaven And Hell or Neon Knights. Or The Mob Rules. And yes, the swastika in the picture was a bit off-putting to me

A little background that might be helpful. The guitarist was the same guy as in Deep Purple. The singer was in a band called Elf who supported Purple early to mid 70s. Ritchie (the guitarist) loved Ronnie (the singers) voice so much he decided to form a brand new band with him called Rainbow. After 3 studio albums they fell out (Ritchie can be a hard man to get along with and is known for throwing strops). Rainbow went more commercial and Ronnie joined up with Black Sabbath as they had fired Ozzy not long before. He did a couple of studio albums with them and then formed his own band called Dio. Dio is the singer on 3 albums that are called "classics" in the hard rock and metal genre with 3 separate bands, a feat no one else has ever pulled off! They are... "Rainbow Rising" by Rainbow: "Heaven And Hell" by Black Sabbath and "Holy Diver" by Dio! Ritchie eventually went back to Purple before falling out with them and starting a band with his wife doing renaissance music! As you do 😂. He passed away in 2010 sadly whilst still touring with what was Sabbath (they went under the name Heaven And Hell). I was lucky enough to see him many times between 1980 and 2009 and his voice was still pretty strong even near the end. He is a true legend to many of us as well as being a very decent man who always had time for fans, always happy to sign things and have photos taken. Hope this helps to fill in some gaps. Also try Mistreated by Rainbow love version they did in the same concert in Mubich 1977. Rainbow was best hard rock band in my opinion.

Ronnie James Dio was one of greatest voices of rock that have ever lived. He was also the guy that introduced the two finger rock sign to the world. Richie Blackmore is one of the pioneers of heavy metal as the first guitarist of Deep Purple. Both of them are rock legends.

For someone born in 1968... good grief... and a huge Rainbow fan... I'm happy that the music still moves people. The very first part of the intro part there is "Lazy", by Deep Purple... the band Ritchie was in before he started Rainbow. It's funny, Rainbow tended to blow through this song at "show speed" when they played it in concert, which is a shame. The studio version is better for being a bit slower and controlled, though there is a lot of energy in the live version.

Actually from the same concert two of the most fantastic live songs are "Catch the Rainbow" and "Mistreated" from the Live '77 Munich. So fantastic. Rainbow is an awesome group. Stargazer is probably their best song, but so many good songs. "Rainbow eyes, Temple of the King, Long live rock & roll." And so many more.

Rainbow was a super group. The guitarist was a former member of Deep Purple. The lead singer was none other than Ronnie James Dio. Everyone loved Dio. Most everyone didn’t really like Richie Blackmore (he was a bit difficult to work with). The group didn’t last long, due to the friction between those two mega stars.

The great Ritchie Blackmore playing the song at 2x normal speed. Mr. Blackmore was a couple hours late to this concert as he had been in jail for 2 days because while on stage at the last show he kicked and broke a security guys jaw who was giving a girl a hard time next to the stage and he was arrested. Once released from jail he traveled the 100+ miles to reach this gig as fast as he could still wearing the same clothes from the last show. So he was fired up when he arrived.

Ritchie Blackmore left Deep Purple to go solo and formed a band with Ronnie James Dio's early band Elf (minus their guitar player of course). He ended up kicking out the drummer, bassist, and keyboardist after that first album and replaced them with the mighty Cozy Powell on drums, first Jimmy Bain then Bob Daisley on bass, and first Tony Carey then Dave Stone on keyboards (the later players seen in this concert). Cozy Powell was already somewhat famous as a drummer and went on to replace Palmer as drummer in E.L.P. and joined Black Sabbath later. Jimmy Bain later joined up with Ronnie James Dio again and played bass in the Dio band. Bob Daisley joined Ozzy Osbourne's Blizzard of Ozz band as bassist on the first 2 albums plus worked with him on later albums too. Tony Carey became famous in Germany as a solo artist and later played keyboards with Black Masquerade and joined Zed Yago. Dave Stone moved back to Canada and ended up joining Prism. You may have heard of some of these groups! Rainbow was a huge influence on later power metal bands.

I was 16 in '84. 🤦 I saw RJD with his band Dio in' 86 in Birmingham (not in Alabama) on their "Sacred Heart" tour. He was the consummate showman and one of the best Metal vocalists of all time. 🤘

I graduated high school in 1971, and I have never heard of this band, but I was pregnant in 77 also, being busy working and being a wife so guess I was not up on music in those days.

never heard this song before, not bad. I never really got into Rainbow, but I did listen to to a bit of Dio's solo stuff, and I *really* liked when he took over Ozzy's spot in Black Sabbath. *"Heaven And Hell'* is one of my fave Sabbath albums

Ugh...it is heartbreaking when reactors don't listen to the studio version, the way the song was introduced to the rest of us. Live versions are always going to sacrifice something, be it sound, playing, etc. MotSM has always been performed at about 20 times the tempo of the original, which was always frustrating enough. Alrighty, done griping.

This was great ... Don't remember hearing this back in the day ( got married in 1977 ), but what an energetic performance. I would have loved to see them live. I did see Deep purple live in, I think 1976 in Ft. Lauderdale, as back-up for Rod Stewart. Deep purple was AWESOME, Rod Stewart on the other was very drunk, drinking Mateus (spelling?),on stage and was, if not for Deep Purple, the WORST concert I've ever been to. On another note, the Lindsay Buckingham video is blocked seemingly here in the U.S. Bummer ... Thanks for what you do.

Maunalee if I can give you some advice if it's a band and a song your listening to for the first time listen to the album version of a song first before the live version you wil get a much better feel for the song because this is a great song but it might sound a little bit jumbled live if your listening to it for the first time

Coming here perhaps a bit late but Rainbow was definitely not a one hit wonder. This was perfect combination, Ritchie Blackmore after Deep Purple together with Ronnie James Dio before he moved to Black Sabbath and later Dio. You could see this as a bridge between old Zeppelinisque “heavy blues” and early 80s metal.

Ronnie Dio first sang for his supper at the age of 15, and was a professional musician for more than 50 years. This powerhouse of a hard rock performance... not bad for a guy who started as a doo-wop singer.

Can't believe your mother has never heard of them if she was into rock music. So many classic Rainbow songs to check out and whilst this is a good song, it's not the best of clips. Stargazer, Long Live Rock and Roll, Eyes of the World. So many off shoots from this band too with the lead singer in his own band Dio and with Black Sabbath and the guitar legend Ritchie Blackmore in Deep Purple where you will also encounter more legends like Ian Gillan and Jon Lord. This version is kind of weird because Ritchie starts out with Black Night and a bunch of random riffs, before going into the song. And that habit of Ritchie's used to drive Ronnie nuts. I think if this (MOTSM) were my video on KZfaq I would trim that intro. Get Ronnie's word intro and then cut to the actual song when they have the stage blackout. Even being a huge fan of this song and the band, that meandering intro kind of puts me out of the mood. It's a shame because there's so little film of Ronnie with Rainbow. I think this is Live in Munich? Anyway great reaction video! Your Mom will remember Deep Purple's Smoke on the Water. Ritchie is the guitarist who wrote that riff.

What you were watching there were the godfathers of Metal. I've never been a big fan of Ronnie James Dio, but Richie Blackmore was (and is) a "next level" guitarist. For her edification, someone please request Maunalee to check out some Deep Purple. There a great vid out there of an excellent live version of "Child in Time" that I think she'd like. Ian Gillan is on of the best male rock vocalists of all time. I know, why don't I ask Maunalee myself? Nothing against Maunalee - I think she's pretty cool! But though I will subscribe to KZfaqrs I think do something interesting, and I will "like" everything they do to aid in their monetizing efforts, but I require a little more in the way of societal or artistic contribution and creativity from someone before I'll start actively supplementing their income. Dio, great singer, I am not a fan of the live versions of great songs from the past, especially the older songs, because the audio is usually muddy. To get a feel for this singer’s true range listen to the studio version. I appreciate the live show aspect of many old songs as I was at many of those concerts. For clarity I prefer the studio versions.

Ritchie Blackmore ALWAYS improvised... Rainbow live shows never had guitars like their studio albums. The whole beginning of the song is improvised. And I bet the solo was improvised too, following only loosely the studio version.

It's interesting that Richie Blackmore intro'ed with a riff from a song that he played while a member of Deep Purple. Goes back a ways. Vocals could have been more pronounced. The tempo was faster than on the cut version I believe. Basically a poor (I know live) version the original recording.
