I saw Gabriel on the tour for that album in 1982 and “The Rhythm Of The Heat” was the opening song. It felt like the room was shaking with the drums and Peter’s anguished screams. Breathtaking. I’ve seen over a thousand rock concerts in my life… virtually every major rock act of the past 50 years… and I still rank that concert #1.

@@Bill_Jones. saw it also in Toronto Canada with Peter in a marching precession with a marching band bass drum player and other instruments. I was on the second tier directly accross the stage and they came out directly under us. Best concert opening I've ever experienced. EVER!

When I saw the title of this video i said to myself: "Oh oh! Not sure she's gonna like it." The Rhythm Of The Heat is not the most accessible song to choose when you start a Peter Gabriel journey. But of course, I underestimated you (not the first time to be honest). I should know by now that you are open to all kind of music and that you have the ear needed to appreciate right away how great that song is. Took me a few listens to begin to like it.

Song is about Carl Jung sitting with a group of drummers and dancers during a visit to Africa in the 1920s. The drumming and dancing became so intense he was afraid he was going mad. There is a great live version of this on Plays Live (1983). Glad you enjoyed listening and have a great weekend!

Wonderful to see you getting into Peter Gabriel, his solo work is as extraordinary as his work with Genesis, absolutely love this, the opening track from his 4th album, other brilliant tracks from the album are: San Jacinto, Shock the Monkey, Lay your hands on me and Wallflower. The live video versions of San Jacinto and Lay your hands on me from the "So" tour are absolutely magnificent, best wishes

"The Rhythm of the Heat" kicks off Peter Gabriel's self-produced fourth album, Security, released in 1982. "Shock the Monkey" was the hit. MTV played the video for that song quite often because it was way cool back then, at least to then 15 year old me. The video added to the mystery of what the song was about because the lyrics are open to different interpretations. Gabriel brought back many of the same players from his previous album for this album with notable exceptions Robert Fripp, Dave Gregory, Paul Weller, Phil Collins, and Kate Bush. He brought in Daniel Lanois to help produce his next album, So, released in 1986, which put five singles into the charts, several went to the very top in the US and Canada. Good stuff!

I think Peter Gabriel used a "synth" called Fairlight. With that he simple all sounds you hear in this album. He went to a scrap yard to simple dufferent sounds from for ex blowing in to a pipe from a car and stuff.

Regards! The 4th and the 3rd album are, in my opinion, a coherent masterpiece. When you put the first album on and hear the first song 'Moribund the Burgermeister' you think: "Cool. This is the sequel to 'The Lamp lies down on Broadway'." And when the piece is over, Peter says: "So. That was for the old fans. Stop with the nonsense." And he leaves the path.

I also saw Peter Gabriel on the 1982 tour. The drumming on the album, his 4th, doesn't use cymbals. That gives the music a sound like African. He entered the show from the back of the audience, playing a marching band drum. The Rhythm of the Heat Jerry Marotta from Steely Dan and other artists on drums was fantastic, but worn out every show by playing without cymbals. Listen to Wallflower, and Steam, especially live version

Having just watched your reaction to ACDC's Thunderstruck, I would add to the suggestion of seeing Peter's amazing concert "Secret World". I rank this as the best concert I've ever seen, from start to finish it's just phenomenal. Hard to pick favorites but the very first song Come talk to me, is just beautifully done, then there's the magic of In Your Eyes, then Shaking the Tree... The music, the lyrics, the joyful dancing, Paula Coles amazing voice.. the entire performance is faultless... PS you'll also see the greatest drummer of all time, Manu Katche. Incredible.

Other than congas, bongos or djemba, I don't know the technical names of all those drums but, from what I can tell, there's no tambourines, here. Tambourine is more of a narrow wooden or plastic ring with tiny "cymbals" all around it that jingle when you hit or shake it. Anyway, if you like this, I think you'd really like Rupert Hine! His albums, "Immunity" and "The Wildest Wish To Fly" are his two best. Sadly, he just died a couple years ago and most of his music got ignored by the masses. He did a lot of producing for other people, as well.
