I got lucky when it comes to these jobs. I had an elderly customer come in with his F-150, 74k miles, and it needed a timing set. Instead, he wanted a brand new engine no matter how much I tried to convince him otherwise. He said it would likely be the last vehicle he ever owned. I did the swap and he gave me the old engine. Outside the vehicle this job is pretty easy. I rebuilt that engine and since then every time another one comes in, I just swap out engines and rebuild the next one. It’s worked out great for the last 6 years. A revolving long block LOL.

I'd rather swap out engines than do a timing job in my opinion on these trucks, I don't mind doing a timing job when its out of the truck, Im a Ford Mechanic and I absolutely hated the 4.6 and 5.4 3 valves, between the spark plugs getting stuck in the heads and the cam followers and pre mature phaser failures, I hated it lol. I'd much rather the 2 valve engines, at least with the 2v the only main issue is the spark plug threads are garbage, but ones you install an insert, it'll never happen again, and it doesn't take a whole lot to get the power from a 2v that the 3v has and still be more reliable. My dad had a 06 f150 with the 5.4 3v, the followers were definitely going bad, sounded like a diesel and often ran really bad at times, phaser issues, He never cared to fix it, follower on number 3 cylinder gave up and pushed the spring down on the valve when it let go and the keepers fell out so it dropped a valve and the engine destroyed its self, such an awesome design that Ford never corrected for 10+ years because screw the customers.

Start saving your money now hopefully the engine lasts long enough that by the time it goes boom or clunk or clunk or rattle you'll have enough money to buy yourself a brand new to you GMC dirty Max all of your own and leave all this silliness behind and jump into the world of something totally different it's not free of work or engine problems it's just something totally different and if you really have to you can buy a Ford diesel too 🤯

The ticket to longevity in these engines is knowing what to listen for, and not procrastinating when you hear it. At 110k miles my expedition developed a faint clatter just for a second at cold startup. Right then I started buying the parts I knew I would need to do the timing set. While it was apart I installed a Melling oil pump and new roller followers. That was about 50k miles ago and the engine is still as quiet and strong as the day I first drove it home. Just don't gaff off little ticking noises and rattles, or oil changes. and the motor will last a long time. Also, go with 5w-30 full synthetic oil rather than 5w-20.

Bunch of the fastener holes for messed up and we had to redesign and redo the entire thing. Was not fun.

I worked in commercial nuclear power as an Instrumentation & Control Technician and later when my body just would not support doing the physical work of a craft I entered Technical Engineering where I wrote Impact Statements defining what the impact would be of the work and most likely possible impact due to personnel error influenced by proximity to other equipment and/ or shared power distribution. The scope of work, what was allowed by the craft based on impact and work instructions and the detailed work instructions that also allowed lead way to the techs. I too ran through that crap in the way home and after getting home until I satisfied myself I had made no errors. We also assigned retest requirements to make sure the repaired/reworked equipment functioned as per station technical requirements. It was exhausting at times. Quite often the work I planned would be performed in evening evening ir midnight shift and the operations shift supervisor or superintendent would call me at 1-3 AM asking a question and I could tell him the answer and where to find it in the work package. Many would say to me, what do you do stay awake waiting for us to call you don’t sound like you were woken up and had to gather your thoughts and I guess that’s because my thought train never redd as let shutdown. And, man does that negatively affect REM sleep. Shut down your mind and relax, REM sleep is necessary to continue to function at your peak

Thanks for all the play by play on this and I do admire your skills and the care with which you do your job. I know criticism is the last thing you want to hear after three days on this job. However, I need to point out that was way too much dielectric grease on those coil packs. The dielectric grease, which is an insulator, should make a seal between the boot and the ceramic of the plug. With that much on the coil packs you risk having some on the connection between the coil pack and the plug top which could lead to misfires and/or shorten the coil pack life due to the increased resistance. It's best to apply a small amount to the inside of the boot so it will help seal the ceramic of the plug with the boot but not make contact with the top of the plug when inserting the coil pack.

I've been wondering when that day was coming! EIther that or wide plywood platforms to lay on your belly and reach down into the engine bay. Either for low exotic cars, or these monsters.

I used to dream about replacing head gaskets on Maximas. It sucks working all day, then working all night in your head. You wake up the next morning and feel like you never slept.

Cool Tool… @ 5:55 I saw that ratcheting crows foot and said “cool”. Then I thought “Ya know what would be even better? Some kind of chain driven ratcheting attachment for threading in the bolts..” Then wouldn’t ya know, he brought out something just like I was imagining… I just love it when things like that happen.
