This ain't no B-Side. It's one of their best tracks. Search for drummers covering this track and you'll see. Bonzo's use of subtlety with ghost notes is one of the most respected among the the drum community.

Yup. FM radio play in the 70s, when the pop hits were still AM. Heck, we installed FM radios and stereo speakers in our cars just to listen to music like this, because FM wasn't standard then and the speakers were tinny.

There's a fair amount of absolutely wonderful piano in Led Zeppelin and the most ironic thing is that the song right before this on the album which is the second song on the album, southbound suarez. It comes right after in the evening which is a tour de force, it is completely piano driven, it's incredible. Later in the song it almost seems like Robert Plant is channeling a young Elvis Presley or something but oh my God and that one leads right into this one which then leads into hot dog and really it's the perfect trifecta. But this one is the crowning achievement and John Bonham is right in the middle of it.

I was just going to tell you that they had 9 album's all together and everyone of them got into the Billboards top 10 album's during their time of release and they had 16 total hits that got onto the Billboards and the song Whole lotta love got to number 4 on the charts which was their highest that they ever got. They have sold over 300 million album's.

I lived in Las Vegas in the late 80s. The rock station was KKLZ “where the LZ stands for Led Zeppelin”. Many of the rock stations were album oriented, so they’d play more than just the singles. Sometimes they’d even play whole albums (or sides).

It is true that there was no B sides when it comes to Led Zeppelin and I can tell you a story to prove this to be true. When I was a teenager I at one point in my life had gotten me a brand new turntable and I was a big collector of 45's and for the young ones that don't know what that means a 45 is a small record that comes with one song on a side and usually it would be a song from a album that the band had put out and they would take their hit song from the album and then they would put it on what they would refer to as the A- side and then they would pick another one from the album and that was the B- side and so I started buying the 45's and then one day I bought my first one of Led Zeppelin on 45 and then I picked up my next two of them from Zeppelin that next week cause they were 99 cents and I would buy 5 of them every Friday and when I got those two that Friday I noticed then that they all said on them A - side on both sides of the 45 and that was because everyone loved every song on their albums that they could not pick out one of them for the B - side so they decided that it would say A- side on both of them.

I seen an interview with Plant were he talked about "the crediting" thing and he said the attitude at the time was 'if we make it big we'll pay them off, if not no one will care'. So they payed people off. For instance one song they were sued for was "Babe, I'm Gonna Leave You". The song had been remade a dozen times and it never did well, zeppelin's version on their first album made the song a hit. When the original artist heard about it 10 years after she sued and zeppelin payed her off. none of the other artist that put out the song were sued.

John Bonham played all the percussion on this song! He played the drums the steel kettle drum The maracas and the whistle warning that it's time signature starting time! There was no guest musicians on this album! On all their albums they only had a couple of guests musicians it's always all Zeppelin!

There's no unidentified musicians on this. They did it all. Yeah its JPJ. Loads of piano numbers with Zep. Latin samba on this one. Bonzo laid the Bernard Purdie Shuffle on this. Page used a guitar synth on the middle passage. Outdoor came out after a long layoff following the death of Plant's five year old son in 1977. And this following his near fatal car accident. So it was a melancholy period for the band. They were in virtual recluse for almost two years, and then finally came out in the summer of 79. Bonham died a year later and that was that.

That line in the Wikipedia article about critics heat less Praise on it than earlier albums, is partly true at the time but also partly skewed to fit a narrative. But yeah it was so different from them but once again once you look at it, they were moving on rapidly and really making it so fantastic. Just like so many things like was Ringo Starr a good drummer or not for the beatles, a lot of these things had people that were challenged by new things at the time struggling to describe it, but when you look back through history there are a lot of ways to see how incredible some of this stuff was that got less enthusiasm than normal at first. Which is still a fair amount of enthusiasm anyway.

Dont forget. Led IS not a rock band. But a MUSIC band explore all styles. As british group in a country with a massive Caribbean community, the Caribbean music was in the air in the 70's.....

Unlike other massively popular musical artists (like the Beatles), Led Zeppelin really wasn't a singles band, focusing their attention (for the most part) on albums. That formula fit well with the onset of FM Rock radio which was becoming very popular at the time. FM Rock radio at the time which was aimed at album rock, not pop singles. And despite pleas from their then record label (Atlantic Records), Stairway to Heaven was never released as a single, although it was the most played song on Rock radio for decades, and helped the album Led Zeppelin IV become one of the biggest selling albums of all time. Of course, with the help of Peter Grant, Jimmy Page's original vision of an album oriented rock band would propel Led Zeppelin to being the 5th biggest selling music artist of all time (The Beatles of course are #1). Peace

I remember hearing this on the radio when I was in college. They also played "All Of My Love" which is also from the same album. From what I've read, JPJ was actually the driving force behind this album because Jimmy Page was deep into his heroin addiction. Most of the songs were worked on by Robert Plant and JPJ, with Jimmy and John coming into the studio when they could. They both were dealing with addiction. I think the big reason the album was not as critically praised is that LZ were constantly changing and experimenting. Everything on this album is so different than everything else they've done. It doesn't mean it's bad, it's just different. And that's why critics hated it. It was different. Even though every time LZ came out with something different, critics pissed on it. But audiences kept going to shows, buying albums and merch, and kept listening to the new stuff. Critics are always behind the times.

You need to hear their song, HOT DOG! It's their take on Country music, and it's just a quirky, happy song! Led Zeppelin incorporated all kinds of world music flavors into their songs, which is why they've influenced so many artists and bands, from HEART and GREAT WHITE to P. DIDDY to DOLLY PARTON, and so many more!

As you just said, John Bonham absolutely slaves on this, and sadly, this was literally their last album together before he died. I think every song on it is a gym but at any point, a lot of them got played on the radio a lot and I love so many of them. They were just maturing but still rocking hard.

These guys took advantage of every sound concept around them. Yes, Bonham is amazing and without bands like Zep, the black blues players of the south wouldn't be remembered..

Led Zeppelin only put out a handful of singles, they for the most part only sold albums, which really was brilliant. The only thing was, many of their really great songs, were rarely if at all played on the radio. Out of all their albums & songs, I only have 2 songs I don’t care for, all the others I love. I don’t believe there’s many bands you can say that about, that’s why they are the greatest band ever. While fans loved them, critics seemed to hate everything about them, especially Rolling Stone magazine. Negative comments by other bands, was pure jealousy.

One of the best b-sides of all time was from Zeppelin, who never released "singles." The coolest gem to hear on rock radio back in the day was "Hey Hey, What Can I Do?" One of their best tracks, and before the box set came out in 1990, you could only hear it if it was on the radio.

I really appreciate you but I think you're getting a lot of that last part wrong. It wasn't like they were doing these professional incredible sessions and hiring people they didn't know and never crediting them. This was a burst of energy and they were pulling in people that they thought would be fun to jam with or that expressed an interest. And yeah it was chaotic. I'm pretty sure there was zero attempt to shortchange anybody.

Your description of Zeppelin is spot on but its not that they have B sides. Nearly all their songs are A sides...they just didn't really release singles as we know them today, and due to the length of most of their songs, there was no radio play for most of them. By the time of In through the out door, Jimmy's heroin addiction was full blown so JPJ did most of the writing and mixing, hence the mix of different genres that appear on this album.

I guess I don’t understand what you mean with all the side A and side B stuff? So it can’t be in the literal sense because Zeppelin only released two singles, the last of which was The Immigrant Song with a killer B side Hey Hey What Can Do? I guess you’re just arbitrarily assigning certain songs as B sides, how are you making that determination?
