Very jealous, Virginia. Right place at the right time!!!!! I was in my 40's in the '90's. I was big into disco in the late '70s and early '80's. My dad always told me to like something that's current when it comes to music, so you're not only living in a decade long gone. I have moved on to House music...Big Beat and Trance. Love the lasers and lights that come with those concerts. I'm 71 and still loving life.

I just turned 51, and I can still get it like this. Pop to the floor and back. Dance was my thing. Not trying to be young, I would not trade my generation for nothing in the world. The passion of the era is why I can still do this.

This was the hottest song/album on the planet for several weeks in 1990. I was working as a weekend mobile DJ. By the summer it was in every club, pub, bar, birthday party, house party, bar/bat mitzvah and everywhere else. And the dance itself is a heck of a workout. He is a dancer/choreographer/preacher. Hes a positive person and a pretty good twitter follow. You should check out "Pray" and "Have You Seen Her"(its a cover song, but, not bad), both from this album "Please, Hammer, Dont Hurt'em!"

Hammer was always an aspiring baseball player, was really talented,, but, it's tuff to make it to the majors... He did make it as far as being a Bat Boy for his hometown Oakland A's - during their Bash Bros heyday. As you see, by his dancing and energy, he was an athlete, for sure.

I grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area, MC Hammer is from Oakland (Oaktown as referred to in the song). I was 15yrs old in 1990 and a this song came out during my Freshman/Sophomore year. It was played at every single school dance and we all tried to dance like him. The Bay loves MC Hammer and we're still proud of this song. I'm a white 48-year-old guy from the suburbs who plays electric guitar and bass and listens mainly to rock and metal. Epitome of a white dad rocker. I was a senior in HS when this came out, and even I remember MC Hammer well. "Stop! Hammer Time!" was something we all said to each other (and to annoying teachers to piss them off), and we all attempted to do the Typewriter dance. He was HUGE at the time. Other rap artists at the time absolutely crucified him because people like me knew his stuff and liked it. Ironically, some of those artists did exactly what MC Hammer did, and more, becoming huge movie stars and billionaires. Lookin' at you, NWA.

As other people have said, we knew it was a hit the first time we heard it. I was in my mid 30's. When Hammer was a youngster, he was a ball boy for the Oakland A's. I think he was 'discovered' by then owner Charles Finley, because he did some sort of 'performance' in front of the Oakland Coliseum before games. Finley even brought him into his box seat area on several occasions. As was also said, Hammer didn't make the best financial decisions during his heyday, but his financial problems were also due to the evolving nature of rap and hip hop. The big dance and entourage production thing was fizzling out. He owed his dance crew a lot of money. He was living lavishly at the time, but did the right thing and paid them, having to scale down his lifestyle.

Everybody knew the dancing-steps as they were printed in the "Bravo"-Magazine as well! We had no Internet-videos back then, so we learned it with printed-sheets *haha ... BUT: 30 years later ...
