One of my favorite bands of all time, such a super group during the Dio era. Ritchie Blackmore (guitarist) from Deep Purple and Cozy Powell (drummer) along with Ronnie James Dio made (3) fantastic albums and (2) Live albums (On-Stage & Live in Munich 1977). All the albums had a mixture of hard rock, ballads, funk, blues, they could do it all. One of those groups that sounded better in concert. They were something special. Strongly suggest the song "Stargazer" and check out the live versions of "Mistreated" and "Catch the Rainbow". Dig deep, they are worth it.

Neither Rainbow or Dio was his first band by a long shot but Rainbow came before and after that Black sabbath and then Dio but he started singing and recording in the late 50´s with bands that were called things like Ronnie and the Redcaps and Ronnie Dio and the Prophets. Eventually it ended up in a band called Elf in the early 70´s which ended up as a support act for Deep Purple on tour where the Deep purple guitarplayer named Ritchie Blackmore discovered Dio and they formed Rainbow together and all the Elf members except the guitarplayer ended up on the first Rainbow album which this song is on. Dio was in his mid 30´s when he was in Rainbow but he actually started out in music as a trumpet player as a kid and teen and he actually originally reluctantly became the singer in the band in the 50´s when there was none other, he was originally the bassplayer and continued to both sing and play the bass at the same time up until and including on the first Elf album. Dio never had any vocal training but still managed to become one of the greatest metal singers of all time.

You've reacted to the guitarist a couple of times at least - with Deep Purple - Perfect Strangers and, of course, that solo in Highway Star! Would suggest a reaction to Rainbow's Stargazer and, if not with it, then after that "Light in the Black" which completes the story!

Dio was in Rainbow first, from 1975 until leaving in 1979 to replace Ozzy Osbourne in Black Sabbath. The guitarist is Ritchie Blackmore from Deep Purple, whom Dio had met while fronting another band, Elf. Ritchie was immediately struck by Dio's voice, and they decided to collaborate on material together, with Elf as a studio session band. Interestingly, this lineup never played together live, as Blackmore dismissed everyone except Dio after their first album, "Ritchie Blackmore's RAINBOW", was completed.

Dio was in Rainbow from 1975 to 1979, then over to Black Sabbath "1980-1982, then again in 1992, Dio's band was basically going 1983 - 2007, then in 2007- 2010 under the name Heaven & Hell. Before Rainbow he was in Elf/ The Electric Elves, Ronnie Dio and the Prophets, Ronnie Dio and the Red Caps. Ritchie Blackmore on guitar. Rainbow had, I think, two other singers, and while I think Dio is the most recognizable of them, the others are still pretty great too. Dio also later replaced Ozzy in Black Sabbath. So, check some of that out too.
