If I may speak to this, lack of visibility and representation is one reason non Native people tend to think of Native Americans and Indigenous communities as living in the past. But they are very much alive today (and in the case of communities in the U.S., are American citizens) and they are also frequent victims of police violence that is often ignored.... or not even heard. There is also a traumatic pattern of the cases of murdered and missing indigenous women being ignored. It is a consequence of the dominant culture not showing or acknowledging their humanity, it also goes hand in hand with society at large treating their cultures as a costume or mascot. Something that lives in the past and whose humanity can therefore be ignored. It is wrong we need to work against. I love your videos and I try to learn from both of your openness in engaging with new things. Thank you!

Native Americans were in America before all of the rest of our ancestors either came here by choice or as slaves. They speak English as well as their tribal language.
@tyrelchavez
@tyrelchavez 3 жыл бұрын
Sadly many indigenous Americans don’t speak their language because their ancestors were forbidden from speaking it and as a result, many native languages are now extinct.
@teehlfx5238
@teehlfx5238 3 жыл бұрын
Tyrel Chavez Yes, the US government tried to erase the language and culture of Native American tribes to the point that they would force Native children away from their families to attend boarding schools where the children were systematically punished for speaking their languages and practicing their culture. As result many lost that connection or were taught shame about their beliefs and practices. That is not something you can undo and the effects of it are still very much real today. So seeing the dancing at the beginning of the video is both protest and pride.
@marshaverduzco2859
@marshaverduzco2859 3 жыл бұрын
I don't know when this policy of erasing the language and customs began, probably back in prehistory, the same was done in early Britain ( when they were Britons) but it seemed to me the white immigrants to this country carried it to a whole new level of low. I graduated from a school called Bowlegs in a small town named Bowlegs in OK.

Yes that was also a hit there were many back in our younger days. They are American Indians Native to our country not from India. They were here before the land was taken from them. My grandma was actually half breed with extremely long hair. Your might even have American Indian in your family. Quite a few black families do. But I'm still waiting on KC and the Sunshine Band I'm your Boogie Man and Carl Douglas, Kung Fu Fighting

I am old enough to remember when Redbone dropped this song in the 70's. It is still is one of my favorite songs. As for Native Americans, Redbone was a great sense of pride for many as they still are to this day. I am not Native American but I have admired their culture all of my life. I still hope that someday other first nations people will emerge and are allowed to display their talents. Others need to learn how much they have contributed to this country and how important they are to all of us!. Thanks Guys for your review!

In the African American community, Redbone is a descriptive term that refers to skin color. Redbones are usually darker than fair skinned Black people, but lighter than milk chocolate and have a red tint (instead of a yellow tint) undertone to their skin. I think that may be what they expected to see... an all female group of "Redbones".

This Old Lady wishes you guys would research some of the artists you listen to. You have a true appreciation for the music, but you could be so much more knowledgeable of the artists, many of whom created the sounds and styles you listen to today. RedBone's members are Native American, Mexican American, and Cajun. The group itself has a really cool musical history. "Indians" are Native Americans; you should read their sad history in our country. The Cajuns were originally in Canada and when they wouldn't swear allegiance to England were forced to leave the country, migrating all along the southeastern coast of our America, most settling in Louisiana. I was tickled you guys chose this piece, one of my favorites. But look up the original cut; it's fantastic. And study up on what you enjoy, Guys. You can't imagine how it will raise your level of appreciation of not just the music, but the artists as well. Happy New Year!

I’m not mad they don’t know the histories. They’re trying to educate themselves on music. Maybe education where they are from isn’t as expansive as yours. Maybe their day to day life took precedence. Maybe just be glad they tried something new and leave it at that. EDIT: The nature of what they do is, literally, to know NOTHING, or as little as possible, about what 👏🏼 they 👏🏼 listen 👏🏼 to. Dang, Karen. Go be a music appreciation teacher of you're that concerned.
