One of my big brothers would sit by my bed when I would have asthma attacks at night. He would sing to me to calm me. Sometimes all night. This is one of the songs he sang.

Art Garfunkel (the tall one) has an absolutely angelic voice. Paul Simon (the short one) is a brilliant song writer and no slouch as a singer himself.

"Brown-Eyed Girl" was by Van Morrison ... This was their biggest hit of their career, spending 6 weeks at #1 back in 1970 and was the overall #1 song of that year as well. Ironically after this song and the album of the same name, it caused the duo to break up.

When you asked what a "bridge over troubled waters" means, the answer, I believe, lies in the line that follows: "I will lay me down." He's offering to shield his friend from harm, like the old-fashioned notion that a gentleman should throw his coat over a puddle so a lady can walk over it without getting her feet wet.

Paul Simon (shorter man) wrote it and Art Garfunkel sang the main part. I cannot believe you never heard of the “Sound of Silence.” If you listen to their concert at Central Park, Garfunkel sings the whole song y himself.

S&G are the GOATS of Duos. This song won many Grammy's and other awards in 1972. Paul Simon, the shorter guy is considered one of the greatest song writers of the last century and Art Garfunkle's voice is pure silk. Every dong on that album is worth listening to. They broke up in the early 70's after years of great songs and then got together again several years later and delivered a free concert at Central Park and it is estimated that over 500,000 showed up. You can see it on YT. Should you do more reactions to S&G make sure to do only the studio versions b/c many of their songs had instrumentations that cannot be duplicated in concert. The Boxer, Homeward Bound, Cecilia, Scarborough Fair, Mrs. Robinson. After the break up Paul went on to write many new hit songs. He has had an incredible solo career. Still performing.

The tall one (Art Garfunkel) was singing lead and then when the harmony comes in, that is both Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel. Then, Art closes it out. Most songs are the both of them together in harmony. Beautiful song. I believe this won Song of the Year in 1970.

Paul Simon wrote this for Art Garfunkel to sing as a solo Gospel style song. Originally it only has 2 verses but Garfunkel insisted it needed a third verse where they would duet.
@jamesdrynan
@jamesdrynan Жыл бұрын
Simon had doubts about the arrangement. With Garfunkel's angelic voice and Larry Knechtel's gospel-tinged piano for the first two verses, it didn't seem to scream hit record. Adding bass, drums, strings and harmonies to the last verse, it took off like a jet plane. Simon said the first time he heard it on the radio, he could hear the magic in the mix. It won five awards in 1971, including Song of the Year and Record of the Year Grammy Awards.

They have had so many hits such as "Sound Of Silence", "The Boxer", "Mrs. Robinson", "Scarborough Fair", "At The Zoo", "Cecilia", "America", "I Am A Rock", "El Condor Pasa" etc. Paul Simon went on to have a huge solo career with lots of great songs.

The song won five awards at the 13th Annual Grammy Awards in 1971, including Grammy Award for Record of the Year and Song of the Year. It is Simon & Garfunkel's most successful single, and it is often considered their signature song; it topped the US Billboard Hot 100 chart for six weeks, and also reached number one in the United Kingdom, Canada, France and New Zealand. It reached the top five in eight other countries, eventually selling over six million copies worldwide. It became one of the most performed songs of the 20th century, covered by over 50 artists, including Elvis Presley, Aretha Franklin and Johnny Cash. It is ranked number 66 on Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.

Paul Simon said he was pressed for time in finishing the lyrics of the song, and that if it had more time he would have rewritten the last verse that starts with "Sail on silver girl". I never really thought it fit the rest of the song myself, and when I heard that I knew why. About 4 1/2 years ago I came up with some alternate lyrics for the last verse which keeps the song nonspecific and more universal regarding to whom it is sung ("dreams" would comprise two notes): Sail on silver light Sail on by Your time has come to find All your dreams on their way See how they shine Oh, if you need a friend I'm sailing right behind Like a bridge over troubled water I will ease your mind Like a bridge over troubled water I will ease your mind

You picked perhaps the greatest duo ever Michael! You know Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel got inspiration from other duos like the Everly Brothers and had love of Folk music. They were part to the New York Greewich Village scene that Bob Dylan and all the great came out of. Their first few attempts didn't do well on the charts but they did add some rock rhythms and instruments and things took off. They wrote album after album and hit after hit. They have taken breaks on the duo over time and Paul is a fantastic solo artist and Art is a good guy. They were loved by many and you know Elvis Presley does a fabulous cover of this song - just fantastic.
