You will find that no two Steely Dan songs sound alike. They were basically a studio band with Donald Fagen and Walter Becker up front and some of great studio musicians of all time. Do more Dub, they will always have grooving 💯

As you can guess, back in the day Jose Cuervo Gold, Colombian weed, and a sweet young girl was...well, a great thing. Listen to them doing "Black Cow", "Do It Again", "Reelin' In The Years", "Rikki Don't Lose That Number", "Deacon Blues", "Aja", "Kid Charlemagne", "Dirty Work", and about 30 or 40 more.

This is your favorite band’s favorite band. The funk these guys bring sneaks up on you. You don’t think of them as funky until you realize it after hearing several of their songs. I have some examples for you. Next recommended Steely Dan songs: “FM (No Static at All)” “Black Cow” “Kid Charlemagne”

Dub Zero, the instrument you asked about is called a Melodica. It’s a wind instrument with a keyboard, can be electronically amplified or not, and has an extremely distinctive pitch. Donald Fagen, the lead singer plays this instrument quite a bit on several SD hits.

Steely Dan is a great rabbit hole to jump into. Their production is top notch and they have been sampled by so many other artists. Other great songs by them are "Reelin' In The Years", "Rikki Don't Lose That Number", "Kid Charlemagne" and "Dirty Work" just to name a few.

I’ve heard this song somewhere before and I’ve heard of Steely Dan and always wanted to check them out. Now I’ve done that, thanks man and they sound soooo cooool. Will check out your other reaction to them, probably heard that too without realising it’s that band. Funnily enough I even know where their name comes from…I could be wrong but it’s supposed to be a name for a vibrator. ✌🏼

Sounds like a harmonica, but it is actually a synthesizer. The song is about a guy in his late 30s who still chases after the young ones, even though they can't relate on any level other then partying and gettin' down. The first three songs on this album : Babylon Sisters, Hey Nineteen, and Gaucho, all have a similar "Older man - Younger lover" theme.

Gregory, what you’re calling a synthesizer is actually a Melodica. It is a wind instrument with a keyboard, can be amplified electronically or not, and has a very distinctive sound.

Great reaction! "Older" dude in his 30's seducing a "young and willing" 19 year old. She don't remember Aretha Franklin, they can't dance together, they've got nothing in common except sex, drugs and rock & roll, which is just fine for the occasion. Steely Dan is so freakin' good, so you're in for a treat.

Just some weed information from the early 70's. Like prior comment Columbian was pot that sometimes was very good and sometimes just asi asi. Also in my area el supremo weed back then was Acapulco Gold and Panama Red (the latter was difficult to find. Also Mexican and Jamaican which was lower in potentency. Late 70's brought weed from California in a stalk form that was very potent. The carefree days.

More chillin in the 70s, getting buzzed and laying around. He was older but 19 was legal and she was having fun. It's what we did cause 18 was legal and we thought we were grown so we bought Cuervo gold and cheap weed and made our own fun.
