The main thing to keep in mind is that steely Dan was basically two guys combining every studio instrumentation a musician they can to make the best albums they knew Hal. They were production freaks. They began in 1972 and Pete with your last album of significance-Gaucho. They were always too sophisticated for the top 40 crowd and only had a couple of hits but the AOR crowd really got into them. I don't think anybody has produced better albums since the Beatles when it comes to mixing rock and jazz.

My friend, "Aja" the song will hook you for life. It is that good. But always go with the album studio cut when listening. They are like Alan Parsons and latter Beatles, they are a creation of and for the studio. Every note is charted.

Back from vacation and I see two reactions to what may be the most loved, hated and misunderstood band to come out of the 1970’s. First couple of albums were more rock oriented, try Reelin in the Years for a rocker with some killer guitar licks. They had a touring band but quickly decided that they did not want to do that anymore, mainly because of co founder Donald Fagan’s unease in front of an audience. So that stopped touring and just did studio albums. They used the best studio musicians they could find and moved towards a more jazzy sound. The musicians on their albums are like a who’s who of jazz and pop greats. Others have pointed out that Michael McDonald appeared on many of their songs, listen to Peg for Michael McDonald’s background vocals. They had a reputation for trying out many musicians for the same song. As a result their production is unmatched by any other group, ever, IMO. You can hear it in all of their music, the groove as you say. Every Dan Fan has a favorite album or particular song. Mine is the album Aja and the song of the same name. Killer drum solos, killer sax solos, just an all out fabulous song. Try Kid Charlamagne also. Maybe the entire album could be done at some point. It is well worth the listen. Thank you for going into the well for this group. You will not be sorry.

They are very musical or "instrumentational" (not a word)...word has it that they'd audition 5 or 6 of the best studio guitarists out there, just to get the right sound...do more Steely Dan...you'll like em!

You hit the jackpot when you heard about Steely Dan my friend! There’s no group like them. Two guys, who hired and used the very best musicians out there. Their catalogue is both large and incredibly varied. That’s why they’re one of the most sampled groups in Hip Hop! I’d suggest ‘Night By Night’, ‘Home At Last’, ‘Peg’ ‘Black Cow’ and ‘Jack Of Speed’ as five excellent and very different examples.

The Steely Dan heyday was between 1972-80, although they recorded after that and Donald Fagen had a great solo album. If you start with the album "can't buy a thrill" (Do it Again) the journey could take you down a deep rabbit hole.

Hey, friend. There are almost too many great songs in the Steely Dan catalog to list, but you're in for some real treats. I might start by suggesting songs on the "Aja" album. Also, Donald Fagen (of Steely Dan) has some great tracks from just after "Hey Nineteen," which are amazing and of the same period. I recommend " I.G.Y. " and "New Frontier." And I believe "instrumentational" is a legal use of language, albeit an uncommon one. ;-)

Every Steely Dan song on every album is like that. It's a groove. No filler, all good songs, tons of hits. Aww. don't be mad at yourself, you have the rest of your life to enjoy! Steely Dan is not a band as such, it is just two guys, Walter Becker (now deceased) and Donald Fagan (still writing music). Becker and Fagan use studio musicians, and they use different musicians on each song, choosing the right musician with just the style they want for that song. It just gets better and better. You won't lose subscribers, you are turning them on to something wonderful.

I think Steely Dan is more appreciated today than when their songs came out, because the production quality doesn't always show up on a car radio the way it does on headphones. Otherwise, you need expensive hi-fi equipment to hear the depth of the recording. Also, I don't know if you've done the Doobie Brothers, but a few of their songs are worth listening to today. Black Water has a lot of musical complexity, but the virtually unknown 8th Avenue Shuffle is shockingly good for a song that didn't get any airtime when it first came out and deserves more attention than most of their other songs.
