When you listen to the Beatles today you may just recognize their music as one of a genre. But you need to realize that almost every Beatles song was the first song of that genre. They created so much music, not just songs, music.

Paul wrote this to John's son, Julian. John had left his family and became infatuated with Yoko Ono. Paul saw that Julian seemed to be struggling with his father's neglect, and wrote this in an effort to comfort him. The message of not locking in the anger, and learning to forgive and move on with your life resonates with many people. I'd suggest "Revolution" or "Helter Skelter" for an 'amped up' experience, "Eleanor Rigby" or "The Sun King Medley" for tight harmonies, "Strawberry Fields" or "I Am A Walrus" for a psychedelic vibe. As others have stated, the Beatles rarely held themselves in a single musical genre for very long.

When I was 14 and asked my dad why everyone thought the Beatles were so great (I only knew She Loves You). He played me the White Album. Mind. Blown.

What blows my mind is that I was about 7 years old when this song first played on the radio. I’m 63 now and people are still playing and enjoying it! 😮

Every Beatles album is completely different, they were always evolving!

Imagine living in a vacum...all the music sounded the same. All of a sudden out of nowhere, new sounds over different years enters this vacum and suddenly there. New sounds, new songs, new ideas. That is the Beatles. Every song or album that came out was a whole new experience..a new taste. It was wonderful

Literally my favorite band of all time. I'm only 23 but people always tell me I have an old soul and this is music.

This was the first seven-minute song to make it to #1 on the charts. Someone told The Beatles that the radio DJ's wouldn't play such a long song. (most songs back then were about three minutes long). John Lennon answered "Yes, they will play it". When asked why he would say that, he said "Because we're The Beatles."

If you watch them perform this live on the David Frost Show (with the audience joining in) in 1968, it captures not only the song, but the entire spirit of the 60’s. The culture of the time, EVERYONE joining together. THIS is what it was like.

I used to travel for work, 36 weeks a year, for over a dozen years. Corporate domestic and international banking. Anyone that's had that kind of career usually ends up spending A LOT more time in bars than they probably originally intended to. And it didn't matter which kind of bar, in whatever country, if I started "NA NA NA NANA NA NA" low and slow and building, 99 times out of 100, everyone at the bar would pick it up and by about the 5th refrain, the bar would be just this chorus of the end of "Hey Jude."

Paul to me is a vocal chameleon. He can sing in so many different ways and styles. He is arguably in the top 10 of greatest musical artists of the last 100 years.

You'd have to listen to 30 or 40 Beatles songs to figure out why they are the best of all time. The variety of styles is staggering, from pure pop gold through indie style tunes, psychedelic genius, beautiful anthems and everything inbetween

Let it be, All you need is love, Come Together, I am the Walrus, Back in the Ussr, Across the Universe, Don't let me Down, Strawberry Fields, Here comes the Sun, Blackbird, Twist and Shout, Eleanor Rigby, All my Lovin, The Long and Winding Road, A day in the Life, Nowhere Man, While my Guitar Gently Weeps. Yeah. Do all of those. Basically do every Beatles song ever. You can't get the hang of their sound because they constantly evolved and innovated. Music literally wouldn't be the same without them. They are the G.O.A.T.

I grew up with the Beatles music & had most of their records. They were part of the British Invasion. You can't go wrong with any of their music. They had so many great songs in the 60's-70's. "Hey Jude" is a great song written by Paul McCartney to comfort Julian Lennon when his parents separated.

Another historical note on this track was that up until this time, radio airplay was relegated to songs under 3-1/2 minutes in length. This was the first song to exceed 7 minutes in length and not only receive widespread airplay, but rise to #1 on the Billboard charts (like so many other Beatles classics). Another example of the Beatles breaking barriers and establishing new ground upon which artists would use to create new directions and creations.

Come Together is one groovy bad ass classic by the Beatles. MJ even covered it! Paul McCartney is singing on this one. He wrote it for John Lennon’s son, Julian, who was grieving his parents’ divorce.

There's a medley on the Abbey road album that starts with the song "you never give me your money" and ends with the song "The end". It's a wonderful piece of music, but I don't know that it's a great place to start. There's another song from the sergeant Pepper's album called "A Day in the Life" That kind of changed the world when it came out. But the thing about the Beatles was that every album they released, after their third album, was unlike anything that had ever been released before. And after Beatles release, there would be a bunch of albums by other bands come out that sounded similar to the last Beatles album. Then the Beatles would release another album and it would be completely different than anything anyone had ever heard and the process would repeat... More imitators. Then, the great musicians said "let's not copy the songs... Let's copy the idea of making songs in a style that nobody's ever heard"... And that's when the whole music scene got creative and amazing. When you giving the Beatles credit for changing things, Thats how they changed things... They made it cool and commercially desirable to do something different. And that's why there was so much great art in the late '60s and early '70s

The 60’s and 70’s were the best years for music. Such experimentation and the sounds were always changing. Every album is a masterpiece! 💜👵🏼✌🏼🌻

If you're in an elevator and someone sings na na na na na na na, everyone, no matter what age, will sing "hey Jude". The song bound us all together. Still does. Magic. Lonely people find friends, sad people feel understood.

When you listen to a Beatles number you have to remember what came before . They pushed the envelope in an era when stereo was a very new thing and the world was changing. The first satellite world wide link had the Beatles singing this. Everybody could nah nah.

Every Beatles album has great songs. They are a legend for a reason they had a very diverse sound career.

Eleanor Rigby and Yesterday are two that I would recommend, though there are sooo many to choose from.

The reason you haven’t locked down their sound yet is because they didn’t have just one sound. Everything they did was new and groundbreaking at the time. They paved the way for so many bands to explore and do whatever they wanted. They changed music. Keep going!!! So many more songs to hear.

A must listen is My Guitar Gently Weeps.. The Beatles featuring Eric Clapton... A great song both lyrics and music are stellar.

POLO ..that’s the thing about the Beatles. They have the ability to come out of no where with something you don’t expect. The amount they accomplished in 10yrs is phenomenal!

It's almost impossible to explain to modern audiences how revolutionary it was to have a 7 minute song on the radio back when most songs were 3 minutes and a "long" song was 4 minutes. The "second half" of Hey Jude always takes me to a special place. Now I have to go listen to it uninterrupted!

KZfaq has been sticking drummers in my feed; drummers talking about how good Ringo was. And how he played to fit the song. So I am starting to pay more attention to that, finally. Just their lyrics and melodies are enough for one's brain, for the first decades😊

When Paul sings this song at his concerts the whole crowd sings along its amazing to witness it in person

There are live performances out there. I’m not usually a fan of live, but the love and participation of the crowd, along with really a really amazing performance is a sight to behold. The audience is singing every word, and wants the song to go on forever, and the Beatles keep it going just for them. They improvise, and share in the singing, and keep it going for ever. The connection is real, and you can see it. The crowd knows they are just a crowd, but the band plays to every one of them.

Watching you just vibing, and me knowing that the song is about to really take off, has brought me great joy.

I was just with my friend New Year’s Eve as he sang this to his father who was in hospice. He passed away two days ago. Some songs mean more than just music. They’re multi-generational. That’s what the Beatles are. I’m not a huge Beatles fan because I never had that connection with anyone parent or anyone from that generation who lived it. There is 1 live performance of this on The David Frost Show. It’s amazing. And yes Paul has a lot of soul. Oh Darling! being one of his biggest or Monkberry Moon Delight, a song he wrote for his daughters.

Too many songs to choose from - I was 8 years old & saw them do their first performance on the Ed Sullivan show (60 yrs ago now) - everything changed that day! I love their Norwegian Wood album and then of course they just evolved from there! Thank you for heading down this rabbit hole!

Great reaction. There shouldn't be an pressure to like music just because others do, but when the artist is such an icon and larger than life -- as the Beatles are -- I know what you mean! For generations of people the Beatles provided the soundtrack for their lives. The melodies are timeless, the production was groundbreaking, their influence on popular music is immeasurable and best of all --- they have so many different sounds. Even fans can't agree on their favorite track. Just enjoy!

Paul wrote this song for John's son who was having a hard time adjusting to the divorce of John-Cynthia, and Yoko entering their lives. He is telling Julian to let her in....

To add: Jude was Julian Lennon, John's young son when Paul was encouraging him to be open to Yoko as his new step mom. The Past Masters collection for the singles. Paperback Writer and duo single Rain might be peak Beatles.

Their discography is vast, and once you get into it you will be amazed at the sheer diversity of genres and styles from song to song. I'll list a few suggestions. YES. The melody, the harmonies, so different and intricate, but with texture and grit. Whatever way you travel through the Beatles catalogue you can't go wrong. Know that they created all their music as a band between 1963 and 1970, and it's amazing to experience their evolution from the early hits to the later music.

This has to be my favorite Beatles song. When I was still an infant, we had a music box that hung on the wall, and when you pulled the string down, it played Hey Jude. I didn't know the tune was called 'Hey Jude', my Mom says I just loved to hear the music play. When I was about 5 years old, we were driving in the car one day with the radio on, and Hey Jude started playing. I recognized it instantly. I was amazed to hear it playing on the radio. I could hardly believe there were words to the tune - and what words they are, it rocked my little world!!! 👍😁

Your gut is right. The Beatles are indeed are journey. Their catalog is so diverse. I didn't realize that myself when I started to explore them. It's pretty astonishing.

In my 70s now, so I've got a Favorites list a mile long - This song is way on top. I saw them in Chicago 1964 - Their songs were simpler then, but still Great to this then 13 year Kid. They were revolutionary.

This Beatles rabbit hole will be the best thing you ever did. If you want to go down it, don’t just scratch the surface, because you will never understand the ruckus about them. You have to do a lot of songs. Why? Because EVERY song is unique and musically excellent. No two songs are alike and they were capable of crossing every genre: Pop music, rock music, blues, music hall style, sing-along-longs, lullabies, the first metal music, spoken word, children’s music, psychedelic music, ballads…you name it. All 4 members were frontmen, taking turns singing lead. Although John Lennon and Paul McCartney became the world’s most famous and successful songwriting team, George Harrison and Ringo Starr also became excellent songwriters, too! It gave the Beatles a huge edge against the competition. None had any formal musical training…they were all self taught! They had a great producer who had a Master’s in Music and helped them create everything they wanted to create, from string ensemble accompaniments to big orchestral accompaniments to crazy sound effects, to looping tapes to helping them create an old-fashioned 1920’s sound. It was all truly “Art on Vinyl.” Do one song a week! The best way to do it is to listen to their music in chronological order. That way, you see and hear how they evolved into better and better musicians and artists each year!

Paul got some of his singing influence from Little Richard. The Beatles used to open for him in England.

The Beatles truly were innovative, trailblazers, constantly evolving, incredibly creative and the consumate professionals. They definitely earned their legendary status.

The Beatles break through genre as you will see if you listen to more. Great vocals (either by Paul or John or George) and the MELODIES?????? Fantastic! Michael Jackson was a great extension and built on this base. This is why Michael bought the song rights to the Beatles music.

Oh man, I am disappointed you didn’t see the video. The live performance with the audience coming up to them. A diverse audience, especially for that time. Old young black white. The song has been sung by massive crowds in Hyde Park in London. The Beatles are the GOAT. No question. They could do anything. And they did. And they did it ahead of everybody else. They were the first at everything.

A Beatles anthem. The best Beatles songs are from their1967 to 1970 period. 'Let it be' is also a powerful song.

I’m happy to hear that I’m not the only weirdo who repeatedly puts favorite songs on repeat. Also, this was my first favorite pop song, when I was in elementary school. The teen girls had then-newfangled little transistor radios, and I loved it when this came on!

The thing about the Beatles is they have so many different genres of music. t's hard to put them into a box. You never know what you are going to get with them. They have so many different sounds and styles of music. They have bluesy tunes, they did what is considered to be the first Heavy Metasl song Helter Skelter, They have soft love songs and they also have psychedelic songs and on and on. They grew so quickly in just a few years and experimented a lot which is why they have influenced so many bands. They pushed the boundaries of what could be done at the time when they were creating music.

How many Beatle fans start singing along as soon as they hear Paul sing "Hey Jude?" Classic tune.

I still get chills every time that song starts up. Their early influences were, among others, Elvis, Chuck Berry and Little Richard, Buddy Holly, and Ray Charles. I don't think I've heard a Beatles song I didn't like, but some favorites are Come Together, Norwegian Wood, A Taste of Honey. Too many favs to list.

Deep catalog of remarkable songs...and they evolved so much in just 8 short years of recording! As a child I remember when Sgt Peppers was released and people saying it's was as if everything had been in black and white, but after Pepper everything was in color! Enjoy the journey!

the entire side 2 of abbey road, beginning with 'here comes the sun'. is absolutely life changing. first time u hear it you'll be like -ok theres some great writing and well put together. then one day unexpectedly one of the song will pop into ur head and some how ull think that it fits in to what ever is going on . then you'll think of another track ,saying "man i HAVE to listen to that again" .every song can be both soothing, relaxing, comforting and invigorating depending on the situation or ur mood. then one day maybe yrs later youll be staring off to rhe horizon trying NOT to think about something and one song in particular will appear in your head and a moment later you'll realize the tear running down ur cheek.

I don’t love every Beatles song, but their vast catalog has something for everyone.

The Beatles weren’t just part of the “British invasion” of music. They led the way for a British Invasion of English bands descending on the US!!! No band from Britain had ever made it in America. In 1963, the Beatles decided they wouldn’t travel to the states until they had a number #1 hit in the U.S. They rose fast in the UK when they started rising. They got their #1 hit in the US. The week they traveled to the states, February 9, 1964, they had the top 5 songs in the top 10 on the charts! Unheard of. And it’s never happened since. They broke up in 1970. During those 8 years, they had 21 Number #1 songs. Another 34 songs got into the top 10. And 71 songs made the top 40 charts and in radio rotation! Crazy stats!

Friends and I, from Omaha, spent New Year's Eve, 1980, in Kansas City. Driving home, our local rock channel was doing the biggest hits from every year. I knew I loved The Beatles, but I didn't realize until that drive home how many years ahead of everyone else they were! They were the innovators. They pulled rock'and'roll into new territory.

I had my first "slow dance" to this song, over 50 years ago. I still remember that intense experience, and cherish the memory.

Another thing to remember is that each of the four members wrote various songs, giving the songs an extra sense of variation even as they evolved album by album. This one was written by Paul McCartney.

It's been awhile. As a kid my musical journey was kicked off with these guys and Motown . What a journey it has been.

Hey Polo, as you already know, I'm a 70 year old man that has spent my whole life in music (hell, I have a gig this weekend), and I can tell you with a great deal of confidence that the Beatles influenced my entire generation. Man, we learned almost everything we knew from our younger years that was important to us, from this band! They taught us how to love and live together regardless of where we came from. Truly an historical band from our generation, and we are proud of them. They represented us old boomers well.
