Actually, what you're hearing is NOT the Monkees playing. It's a group of studio musicians called "The Wrecking Crew" who played on countless recordings back in the late 50's 60's and 70's. only the vocal was Davey Jones of the Monkees.

The idea that they were just actors who learned to play in order to seem like a credible band that could play live - not really accurate. No one wants to give these guys full credit for their talents. It's just the narrative around them that started during the show and never stopped to this day. From all that I've read over the many years of following them, it was really only Mickey that had to learn to play his instrument, the drums. Peter Tork was already hanging out with musician friends in Laurel Canyon, California (Joni Mitchell, Mama Cass, etc...) and played several instruments already (bass, banjo, piano) before auditioning, and Mike was playing clubs in Texas as a solo act on guitar before he made his way to California. Davey was a child actor/singer in England before doing this. It's not like they were coming from nothing and had to learn it all. There's so much more to them than just four guys that got hired for a comedy show.

Yeah, people forget that Davey Jones was playing The Artful Dodger in the Broadway production of Oliver!, and that he was on the same episode of The Ed Sullivan Show that the Beatles first appeared on. Reportedly, he watched them from the wings, saw how the girls reacted, and decided that's what he really wanted to do.

Another fun fact about the Monkees: Mike Nesmith was part of the group that first envisioned an all-music video channel on cable. By the time that idea became MTV several years later, he had moved on to other things, but he was part of the original group of guys that started the ball rolling in the late 70s.
@dunismith3045

They were supposed to remind you of The Beatles. They all answered a casting call for a TV show, which ended up being a hit. And they actually made hit records. But the original intention was to capitalize on the success of the Beatle film "A Hard Day's Night."
@sunny70299
@sunny70299 4 жыл бұрын
and when the media tried to pit them against each other The Beatles reached out and were a big support to The Monkees and befriended them. There is a lovely video on here of audio from an interview Paul McCartney did in 1967 with fans who turned up at his door with a tape recorder, he and his gf invited them into the garden and he chatted to them for quite a while. At one point the fans started mocking The Monkees but Paul stuck up for them and pointed out they are talented guys despite being manufactured and that he loves their self penned music, that it's not their fault the record company won't release it.
@dunismith3045
@dunismith3045 4 жыл бұрын
@@sunny70299 My problem is that Davy Jones referred to The Beatles as "the first manufactured group." I don't know if he was speaking for all of The Monkees but it was more than enough to turn me off. Bye, Davy. Your group was a money grab based on one scene in A Hard Day's Night. Keep The Beatles' name out of your mouth. They were innovators.
@cherylhulting1301
@cherylhulting1301 3 жыл бұрын
@@dunismith3045 Duni, I'm curious. What made Davy call the Fabulous Four "the first manufactured band"? They weren't; the Beatles came together quite organically. I know he's not speaking for the other Monkees. Peter played on George Harrison's albums, and Micky played with Paul McCartney. Michael adores the Beatles and even did a tribute video for them. I have a picture of Mike studying the lyrics on the cover of "Sgt. Pepper." Is this a Brit thing?
@dunismith3045

@@cherylhulting1301 Here's Davy's interview, go to 1:36. I had forgotten that he actually said their haircuts were modeled after the show "Oliver!" in which Davy had played the Artful Dodger in the 60s. So I guess the Beatles really do owe their careers to the Monkees, or at least Davy Jones! Hey, Dave, if it hadn't been for the "manufactured" Beatles and Brian Epstein you would have still been playing the Artful Dodger in dinner theatre in YOUR 60s. That's my opinion, of course YMMV. bestclassicbands.com/davy-jones-talks-about-beatles-12-12-15/

The Monkees were a fabricated band made for a comedy tv show of the same name. Although some of them were musicians, they only sang on their recording Session musicians played the music. They did become very popular. They did eventually learned how to play good enough to go on tour. I was about 11years old when The Monkees hit the airwaves. I was a huge fan. I remember coming in the house from playing outside every Monday at 7 pm to watch them.

@larrywt656
@larrywt656 4 жыл бұрын
That's the "official" story, but it isn't really true. Yes, the band was put together by the TV show producers, but they all had previous musical experience. The only reason they had to "learn how to play good enough" was because they weren't really assigned the instruments on the show that they actually played. Davy was from musical theater and was also an accomplished drummer, but the TV producers didn't want him on the drums because they feared with his small stature, he would disappear behind a drum set. They put Peter on the bass, but he was a very talented guitarist with only minimal experience on bass. Michael was a strong guitarist, but was an even better bass player. The reasons why they switched Peter and Michael in this way has never really been made clear. Micky was a guitarist, but only a marginal player, so he got stuck on drums, even though he couldn't play them at all in the beginning. Starting with their third album Headquarters, they started playing on their records, although they would occasionally still use session players to fill out the sound.

The story goes that Jimi Hendrix was the opening act for The Monkees for a brief tour! The teenie boppers didn’t know what to think about Hendrix!

Indeed Jimi was! Micky and Mike both heard Jimi play while they were in London and Micky straight up hired the Jimi Hendrix Experience to be their opening act on their 1967 American tour. Ah, he didn't stop to consider of this was a good fit! 😮 The Monkees fans truly didn't know what to make of rock's premier guitarist of the 60s and they kept calling for the Monkees. Jimi lasted six shows before walking offstage in disgust. I got a kick out of hearing Mike describe how he used to sneak out and stand below the stage so that fans couldn't see him but he could, in awe, watch Jimi play.

The Monkees are an American rock and pop band originally active between 1966 and 1971, with reunion albums and tours in the decades that followed. Their original line-up consisted of the American actor/musicians Micky Dolenz, Michael Nesmith, and Peter Tork with English actor/singer Davy Jones. The group was conceived in 1965 by television producers Bob Rafelson and Bert Schneider specifically for the situation comedy series The Monkees, which aired from 1966 to 1968. The band's music was initially supervised by record producer Don Kirshner, backed by the songwriting duo of Tommy Boyce and Bobby Hart.

Anne Murray covered this song in the mid-70's and hit the top 10 with her version. Try the Monkees/Pleasant Valley Sunday, their biggest hit. The Monkees were actually actors who auditioned for a part in the TV Show called the Monkees in the late 60's. The show was a big success and the exposure given them by the show also helped them sell a lot of records.

My sister was just nuts over the Monkeys, Davy Jones especially. I was just 4 or 5 at the time when he got a girlfreind. My sister was upset because she planned on Marrying him. My sister was only 14-15 at the time. The walls in the bedroom were just covered with pictures she cut out of Monkey magazines. She bought every single one of their albums. She played them constantly. I was there to here it. I knew by heart every single Monkey song before I was old enough to go to school.

My favorite Monkee was Mickey Dolenz. "Last Train to Clarksville," "Going Down," "Another Pleasant Valley Sunday" and "I'm A Believer." I had a crush. Davie Jones was great, too. He, like Joe Namath, was on an episode of The Brady Bunch & he had a cameo in the 1st Brady Bunch movie, too. I think Anne Murray also sang "Daydream Believer." She was a great, popular songstress from the 70s/early 80s, too. Lots of hits. Have a Happy 4th!

Yes, Anne Murray had a cover of this. She's a Canadian "country" singer. I'm using quotes because I don't find her style to be very country at all. More light rock. Here's that track from her: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/d66TZKqT2puRYmQ.html

@@mbenoit77 Yeah, I remember she was Canadian and a PE teacher (she's out now apparently). If he ever plays her, she definitely has some more songs like "Snowbird," "Could I Have This Dance," "You Needed Me," "Time Don't Run Out on Me," etc. She had a different voice, kinda low....also, Ruta Coolidge had good music. I like "You're Love is Lifting Me Higher." Maybe the title is shorter!

Dude! You are a total trip! I love watching you hearing the songs from my own youth and liking them. Sidebar: I knew the man who wrote Daydream Believer (John Stewart) which turned into a hit that bankrolled his life. He wrote the lyric “now you know how happy I can be” as “now you know how funky I can be” but the Monkees’ producer wouldn’t let them sing “funky.” Go figure. At John’s memorial service Davy Jones (one of the Monkees) performed DDB and sang “funky” right out loud!

Oh my GOD!!!! I was a young girl when they were out. For years, I was Mrs. Davie Jones (before Marsha, Marsha. Marsha loved him ❤️💙💖💕😍🥰), that was until I was 12 and became Mrs. David Cassidy (The Partridge Family), with his poster thumb tacted on my ceiling over my bed, so he was the last thing I looked at before sleeping, and the first before going to school. School girls are funny that way. Way to go to bring me back to my childhood. Their clothes were colorful because it was the Hippie generation, and that’s what it was then, leather suede fringed bags and clothing, to bell bottom jeans and tube shirts, and the all famous peace sign! Great time to grow up, from Led Zeppelin, The Who, and the Monkey’s in the 60’s, to Seger, and The Eagles in the 70’s, to Guns n Roses and Motley Crue of the 80’s. Such great music all around (shhhhh, even Disco, Donna Summer and New Wave Billy Idol man). Glad you’re enjoying our music as I can appreciate what’s out now. Music is the one thing that really could bring this crazy world together. EVERYONE LOVES MUSIC!!!! As in the motto of the Monkey’s and the 60,s, PEACE ✌️✌️✌️✌️✌️! Let’s just have PEACE! It’s really not that hard. Love every person you meet, until they prove themselves otherwise ❤️!!

Their TV show was a hoot, they set up the band to do the show. Davy Jones was an English heartthrob in the 60s and 70s before the Monkees group was created for the show. They did a casting with several different musicians to see how they all melded together. Come to find out, these guys had talent and they had quite a few hits. Last Train to Clarksville, Pleasant Valley Sunday, I'm a Believer, I Wanna Be Free. Tommy Boyce and Bobby Hart wrote some of their songs and in 1966 Boyce and Hart were named musical directors for the Monkees show.

Funny you mention how colorful it is. That was right around the time people started buying color TV's over the old black & white models. Many of the stage sets and the costuming were designed to accentuate this then. I remember as a kid seeing color TV's for the first time and it seemed magical. Color TV is just a given now.

A really feel-good record from the mid 60s. As were most of the music from The Monkees. They were also quite comedic. Teenage girls were thrilled on both sides of the pond. Incidentally, Davy Jones was raised within a radius of about 1.5 miles from me in Gorton, Manchester, UK. Girls would congregate outside his parents' house, even when he was in the U.S. Upon his trips to Manchester to see family he would be seen walking through a beautiful park called Debdale, which had reservoirs around it. Gorton people would smile, say hello and wave, but never bother him. I would have thanked him for making my childhood more enjoyable. There is a gravestone in Gorton Cemetery, which is a memorial from his British family. He is interred in the USA. We are proud to have that. The inscription says "The Manchester Cowboy" as his fellow band member Micky Dolenz called him. R.I.P. Davy
