Not a single one of those 47 ( or Dan Akroyd) got a single dime for making this song. They did it all for charity. I feel like today is artists wouldn't be able to take the time out of their busy schedule to get together for this so it wouldn't be able to be done together in one room like this song was the parts would have to be done separately if they could check their egos at the door and if they didn't expect to be paid. But I feel like it would never happen because modern artists would all want to much money and to be the biggest star in the group.

I was working in radio at the time this song was released. It was a huge deal. One of the things that has been largely forgotten since the release of this record is that every radio station in America -- regardless of format -- stopped and played this song at the same time. The record was embargoed from airplay, and when it popped, you could go up and down your radio dial and virtually every single station was playing it, all at once. What a debut! And then right about that same time, there was the "Hands Across America," where people from coast-to-coast stood in a long line, holding hands, to form a continuous chain of humanity from the Atlantic to the Pacific. A friend of mine and I were playing golf that day, and we broke our round short to go stand in that line on Highway 80 West in Arlington, Texas (in the Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex) just to say we were part of it. Those were pretty amazing times.

Weren't they though? It actually meant something then to be part of something that was in unity and love, instead now, we have so much unity in hate. If you try to even attempt to spread some love, you are labeled in a negative way. It's getting rough out there. For all those who still believe in humanity, stay strong. We live a world and society that makes us believe that loving everyone makes us weak minded and useless in society, but we are the ones that find the light in the dark. Don't ever forget that. We will always be different from the ones that choose to live in the darkness, but maybe, just maybe, we were not made to fit in, but to stand out. May your light shine through the darkness that everyone else sees around you. Don't let anyone take away your light in order for them to feel better about themselves.

You got that absolutely right, hatred, division, separatism. America has lost something in the age of the media....the rich 1% legalized criminals mafia of this country have stolen it by destroying the human spirit of kindness, forgiveness, and hope, with hatred, division, false narratives...and the dumbing down of America Conquer and divide the spoils...."Follow the Money"... It'd be tough to replicate this today. There was an attempt in '94 for Haiti, but it didn't feel the same; didn't feel unified. The sign on the way in said "Leave Your Egos At The Door"; no one tried to outshine eachother, they just tried to do the song & service justice. Also, Quincy Jones is the MVP, here. His arrangement of solos, duets, and harmonies are what make this so incredible.

"We Are the World" is a charity single originally recorded by the supergroup USA for Africa in 1985. It was written by Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie and produced by Quincy Jones and Michael Omartian for the album We Are the World. With sales in excess of 20 million copies, it is the eighth-bestselling physical single of all time.

This was straight magic, all egos were checked at the door and they sang for a good cause. There were many big names that didn't get a solo and had no problem being in the background such as Harry Belafonte, Smokey Robinson, Lindsey Buckingham, Better Midler, June Pointer (the Pointer sisters) and more. It still brings tears to my eyes, its too bad, we as a nation do not have this unity right now.
@wnsafford1854

To add a bit; The USA project was initiated by Harry Belafonte. He & Ken Kragen (talent manager, activist & fundraiser) were in charge. They chose Quincy to direct & produce, chose MJ & Lionel to write it, obtained the talent, facilities, etc. Harry definitely could have had a solo, but I imagine he wanted to showcase the popular artists of the day, to raise the most money.

There is a song "American Pie" - (The day the music died) about a plane crash that took the lives of Buddy Holly, The Big Bopper, and Ritchie Valens in 1959. It occurred to me - that if a plane had crashed into the studio where they were recording - it would have taken about 50 huge stars away from us. That would have truly been the day the music died.

I still get goosebumps whenever I hear this. And while I know you don't know all the artists, rest assured every single one of them is a superstar. In order of appearance, they are: Lionel Richie, Stevie Wonder, Paul Simon, Kenny Rogers, James Ingram, Tina Turner, Billy Joel, Michael Jackson, Diana Ross, Dionne Warwick, Willie Nelson, Al Jarreau, Bruce Springsteen (the one you asked about), Kenny Loggins, Steve Perry, Daryl Hall, Huey Lewis, Cyndi Lauper, Kim Carnes, Bob Dylan, Ray Charles. The chorus included these artists (alphabetically): Dan Aykroyd, Harry Belavonte, Lindsey Buckingham, Mario Cipollina (of Huey Lewis & the News), Johnny Colla (of Huey Lewis & the News), Sheila E., Bob Geldof, Bill Gibson (of Huey Lewis & the News), Chris Hayes (of Huey Llewis & the News), Sean Hopper (of Huey Lewis & the News), Jackie Jackson, La Toya Jackson, Marlon Jackson, Randy Jackson, Tito Jackson, Waylon Jennings, Bette Midler, John Oates, Jeffrey Osborne, Anita, June and Ruth Pointer (the Pointer Sisters), Smokey Robinson. The project was produced by Quincy Jones and Michael Jackson, and the group was conducted by Quincy Jones. Interestingly, 25 years later, an updated version of the song with a whole new batch of artists was done to raise money for Haiti, and that version is quite remarkable as well. Like the original, it includes a wide array of diverse stars from the music world, and even expands to include a verse done in rap. Any time you can get both rap and Tony Bennett all in one song, it's a must-listen. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/iZZ-md2ezLTag3U.html

The Making Of video puts me in awe of the stamina of these artists. So many of them coming straight from an awards show; others flying in just to make this video. Music they've neither seen nor heard til they got in the studio. Michael tirelessly demo singing parts of it til his peers get the melody straight. Consummate professionals, masters of their craft, putting conviction into their voices!

Stevie Wonder and Bruce Springsteen are one of the most unlikely pairing, but the contrast in their voices was awe inspiring. And l can never get enough of Ray Charles what a treasure he is. Another pairing l loved was Dion Warwick and Willie Nelson. Need to check out Willie and Ray singing Seven Spanish Angels live. Thanks for your reaction.

Hi Ashley great to view your reaction. The raspy voice is none other than 'The Boss' Bruce Springsteen. Worth reacting to him and the E Street Band. You can't beat Clarence Carter on the saxophone, the greatest exponent I have ever seen! 🙂

Ashley, you are so young, beautiful and innocent. I say that with the kindest of respect. I loved watching your reaction as much as enjoyed watching We Are The World live along with the rest of the world back in 1985. Of course I am from a different generation. It is adorable that you have no idea who many of the artists are. They were the tops in their field at the time. You should look up information about the recording, and who the artist were. I think you will be surprised that you have probably heard a lot of their music, if you had ever listened to classic rock. These were wonderful times back then when we did not have so many of the struggles that the world is experiencing now. I believe my generation in many ways were the founders so to speak of we want all people, from all walks of life, from all over the world to be considered as one. One people no matter of race, creed, religious beliefs, and so on. They were good times, and I am so happy to watch you experience such a monumental time in my generations history. Peace and love my friend.

The eighties were a great era when we care for our fellow humans. This was for Africa famine relief like Band-Aid out of Britain! There were others aid groups too like Farm Aid to help the farmers who were losing their farms!

You should check out the first charity record for Ethiopia from 1984. 'Feed The World' (let them know it's Christmas) by a group of British artists who joined forces as 'Band Aid'. The 'Live Aid' world wide transmitted, simultaneous concerts in Wembly Stadium England and the JFK stadium in Philly followed a year later in 85. Queen stole the show!

I never NOT choke up watching this one. Part of it is nostalgia. But also, as a counter to all of cynicism out there, there was a major famine happening in Ethiopia that was very visible to the West. And this song was part of a massive fundraiser and organized movement to move heaven and Earth to get food and water to people in total desperation. And its not hard to imagine that these people, no matter what was going on privately, did this in an act of giving and joy. Just the best of what we humans can do for one another.

The companion piece to this song/video is obviously Live Aid, which was literally tbe biggest thing on the planet. Everyone watched, all day, while concerts went on in the US and the UK on the same day. Living legends appeared on stage, and I cannot overstate the hugeness of the event. For a minute, it seemed like we all might be able to come together and do something for people who could never repay or thank us, or anything. Probably sounds stupid, now. But it was a pretty amazing phenomenon, and mostly a GOOD one.
