The shock reaction to the Beautiful Beni by reactors, never gets old. Yuko, singer, was the catalyst for the forming of the band. Their prime purpose is to generate an interest in the traditional instruments of Japan in the young people. They are considered Masters of their instruments and they also teachers. They are hugely popular in Japan and have toured the US and Europe. There are some excellent interviews from when they were in the US with English Subs.

Wagakki Band literally means "traditional Japanese instruments band" and their purpose is to keep alive the interest in the traditional stuff by making it cool and modern too. I think this style is called "folk metal" across the world, when different cultures make metal with their historical styles. Every member here is a master-level pro at their instruments. The two drum sets are Wasabi on "normal" drums (well named for his spicy playing!) and Kurona on the traditional taiko (wadaiko) drums. The wadaiko provides extra oomph and off-beat sounds that aren't possible with just one drummer or a normal band drumset. There are whole competitions in Japan built around the traditional drumming techniques on all different sizes, including ones that are about three times as tall as you! Fun fact: Beni's showy tsugaru shamisen can only be played on the downstroke with her weighted plectrum (large fanlike pick) and the silk strings change pitch rapidly with changes in humidity, and it has no frets, so she has to play everything by ear and muscle memory! Machiya on guitar rarely wears shoes onstage and wears his traditional Noh mask for the songs he wrote before he was with WagakkiBand like Homura. Kaminaga Daisuke on the shakuhachi flute needs a TON of breath to do what he does--and who doesn't love surprising people that they shred the flute in a metal band? Suzuhana Yuko, the vocalist is a licensed Shigin (poetic recitation) performer and teacher, and can do sword and fan dances. I swear the koto player Ibukuro Kiyoshi has golden fingers. ... long story short -- all the members are doing and learning music from their childhood, ... and they were already established musicians (has their own different bands/setups/solo projects) before this Band was formed. then, the Vocal Suzuhana Yuko actually made contact with each of them and proposed to form this band. all agreed and now we get WagakkiBand . :) ** Suzuhana Yuko is also a Graduate in music, a pianist to be more specific.

The classic pick is called Bachi. The koto is a Japanese zither and the national instrument of Japan.The bamboo flute is called a shakuhachi and the second drum kit is a wadeiko The singer's very broad vibrato is typical of Shigin, a traditional poem concert style.Suzuhana Yuko, the singer of the Wagakki Band, is a certified teacher for Shigin. Thanks for the review, also highly recommend Synchronicity from Wagakki Band for a Jazz style music, and 砂漠の子守唄 (Sabaku no komoriuta) for a very unique style of music Wagakki Band are also very famous on great live performance, If you want to a review any of them, recommend to use live version, it is safer from copyright stuff

The mask is a Nou-men that's used in Nou Shinto religion that is not Kabuki same as BABY-METAL's Fox mask. BAND-MAIKO has the same traditional instruments + the Kozutsumi handy drum that Akane tapped.

Waggaki band are a great band for me anyway and I listen to them regularly, well, every day. However as for flautists Ian Anderson is the best in the business as much as I like this one , Ian would blow him away! His stage presence alone is electric!!
