He & Elvis were close friends. Very funny story, he tells on U tube on Conan Obrians night show. Tom was in the shower, Elvis comes in and gives him a song & says “Tom, U have to sing this, this is for you”. Tom says” ok Elvis I’ll be right out. “ Elvis meanwhile has to go to the bathroom & has on leather pants & proceeds to sit on the john to go. He insists Toms voice is perfect for the song. Tom keeps going” ok Elvis, as soon as I’m done I’ll look at it”. Elvis is so excited that he peeks over the top of the shower curtain and is singing it to him.Finally, Tom wraps himself in a towel & Elvis can’t get his leather pants up because he’s sweating etc. He yells out to his friends, “hey Red, hey Sonny, & they come in to help him. Each grabs one side of his pants and yanks them up. Tom is laughing because Elvis acts like nothings wrong & insists he sings this song. He says “Tom this is perfect for you”. Tom & Elvis were such good friends that he sang a tribute song for him after he died but was devastated. Recently in last several yrs when Tom was about in his 80’s he wrote and sung another song about Elvis. The official music video as the song is being played, a projector is running with he & Elvis hanging together with their wives and with each other & he looks so sad even after decades had passed. He often felt that he should have done more to help Elvis before he passed. 😢 At their very 1st meeting at the studio in California when Elvis was making a movie , he asked to see Tom and said hi, I’m Elvis Presley. He was singing a song Tom had just come out with & Tom was so excited. He said to Tom, “how did you learn to sing like that? “ Tom stared at him & said “from you.”Elvis was never jealous or threatened by other singers & they were friends for life.
