The third verse clears up what's happening in the song. . "She runs back down hallway, and through the bedroom door. She reaches for the pistol kept in the dresser drawer. She tells the lady in the mirror He won't do this again, Because tonight will be the last night that she wonders where he's been!"

If you do Garth on KZfaq, you have to do a live version to make sure it's actually him. He doesn't let his music on KZfaq much unless it's a live performance that was broadcast.

Yeah I couldn't believe he let State of Mind cover this song. Even though he gets royalties from it, the fact they might let it go on KZfaq. I honestly can't think of any other song of his that has been covered.

One of the lines in the beginning of the song is “he’s heading back from somewhere that he never should have been”. Also “she’s praying it’s the weather that’s kept him out all night”. The smell of perfume confirmed her fears.

Also the video was the first video banned by CMT for violence, Garth plays the husband, and it shows her pull the gun and then cops at the house. But the last verse is left off of radio and tv, live it gets sung

You need to hear the full version, with the last verse. I saw him do this in an indoor arena. When he got to “The Thunder Rolls “, everyone in the audience drummed their feet on the floor. The low thunder - like sound produced, along with the deep vibrations, was absolutely spooky! …. gave you shivers.

Really wish you could see the actual music video because it's nuts his video at the time got banned from many TV networks because he was highlighting the horrors of domestic abuse and they thought it was too violent.

Two of Garth's songs that are notorious for having the last verses dropped, because "The powers that be" deemed them to be to "controversial" to be played... This song, "Thunder Rolls" and "Friends in Low Places" can best be heard/viewed in his live performance.... And YES, you CAN hear what happens in the third verse of "Thunder Rolls"... And btw... This is not a cover song... It is just overly processed.... As if Garth if Garth needed it... It just avoids copyright issues... Shame, because songs like "Thunder Rolls" or "Standing Outside the Fire" or "The Dance" have very strong videos to accompany the songs. Also, You gotta check Conway Twitty out...Panty Dropper... Countless babies have been conceived to his music...

Neither one of the 3rd verses were written into the songs. They were both an afterthought. The first time he sang the 3rd verse to Friends In Low Places, in Austin, Tx., he explained that it wasn't until he heard the song on the radio, that he realized it needed to have a 3rd verse to make it "more like Garth".

@@darrinlindsey You are right about "Friends in Low Places", I do remember him talking about asking himself if he would actually handle that situation as he wrote it, so he wrote the third verse for it to make it fit himself... . But I'm not so sure about "Thunder Rolls", but do I admit I could be mistaken about that... I do know that many radio stations banned, and in some cases, still ban the third verse of that song... If memory serves, Garth talked about that in that same show too, when he got to that song... He said it had a hard time out of the box...

LOL Britt I love you. Your reactions are my favorite on KZfaq. I hate to tell you, cause you didn't know this, but that wasn't Garth. It was a cover, but a good one. So you got the same idea as if you'd found him. Most of his music isn't on streaming/KZfaq. These Garth cover artists are fantastic since they can make all the streaming money on his songs since he's absent from the platforms. Still a great reaction.

As others say, the 3rd verse is only on the lives. This song was actually banned on many stations, they made it a monster hit by doing so.

The first video he made for this song CMT wouldn't play. At the end, he hits her and knocks her down. Then he turned and started toward their daughter on the stairs case. She gets up and grabs a pistol, then shoots him just as a tree branch comes through the window. The camera pulls out to sho police cars arriving.

As others have said, this isn't really Garth. Only do live versions with Garth, he doesn't allow his songs on any streaming... Garth was entertainer of the year for so many years he had to officially remove himself from the list for someone else to get a chance at some point

Nice Reaction, Britt! :) And there IS a third verse, but Garth only sings it LIVE! ;) Here you can find a live-version: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/prd0p5dlrtm5cWg.html As far as I remember, the music-video to "The thunder rolls" was banned from many TV-Stations, for its portrayal of domestic violence. 😲 And I think, this version was pitched a little bit faster, than it is in the original version... I once played that song on a concert... It was raining, the lightning strikes... and the thunder rolles just at the right moment, where it rolls in Garth's song! :-D That was cool! 😀 By the way: Garth is a big fan of Keith Whitley... you should check HIM and his songs out, like "When you say nothing at all", "I'm no stranger to the rain" or "Don't close your eyes". :)

The first sentence said it - coming back from somewhere that he never should have been. If you can find it, listen to a live version with the last verse that is NOT recorded elsewhere. Not finding that, you can try Tim Foust's version - he sings the third verse.
