The “I didn’t think it would be a hit” comment was a joke. They actually flipped a coin to see who would sing it and Bobby won the flip. Bill said he was glad Bobby won-they were friends and supported each others independent solo. They each had a solo on every album. Listen to Bill’s “I just wanna make love to you” (Bobby jumps in too) and Bobby’s “Summertime”, along with their other classics. Good reaction!

Really get blown away! "Stay With Me" by Bobby when he was older. "Brown eyed Woman" by Bill. And so many others, like "You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling" the most played song in the 20th century and into today. A over 13 million plays and counting. These two were amazing., duo or solo. Bobby is gone😿😿😿, but he left us a great legacy of his beautiful music. A truly great Tenor. Bill, great Baritone, is still performing at the age of 82.

There are 2 types of counter tenors, natural born or trained. Natural born counter tenors (like Bobby Hatfield or Mitch Grasse of Pentatonix) can easily hit the top of their ranges with no effort, while trained counter tenors still have to strain and the effort always shows in some way. Natural born counter tenors are so rare as many believe there is only one born to a generation...

Hello King of The Mix, Many other artists have covered this song and have done it some justice, but this man right here Mr. Bobby Hatfield (R.I.P.) from The Righteous Brothers he "owns" this song "PERIOD"...No one has ever matched nor will they ever match the way he sang this song!!! This was back in 1965, done in 1 take before a "Live" TV studio audience on The Andy Williams Show, with an orchestra playing the music and with "NO AUTO TUNE!!!" There was no room for error and he "NAILED-IT!!!" The Righteous Brothers are "Blue-Eyed-Soul" to the bone!!!

20 years before auto-tune was invented. Bobby Hatfield was early 20's, mum in the audience her first time , first professional engagement, on tv, orchestra in the next room, and he had a head-cold. They hated the pink suits by the way. Yes he had a great range, he went up there, came back down and went up, even higher to prove it wasn't a fluke. He re-did this song, for the movie Ghost, with Patrick Swayse in the 80's. This is a classic, masterful, and still in the top of songs of all time.

3 minutes of perfection! No auto-tune, just raw talent! Bobby was nervous about that high note at the end. He had a cold, and his mom was in the audience and had never heard him sing live before. This edition of the song is better IMHO than the studio version which is what they used in Ghost. It didn't end with that high note which was awesome. Many think that note was falsetto, but it's not. Bobby sang tenor all the way up to the top of countertenor! I also love in the first part of the song where he belts that big note and then has the breath control to sing the decrescendo! That is incredibly difficult to do... just try it! He nailed this song! BTW, this song has been covered about 50 times or more. It was originally from a 50's prison movie called Unchained which was not very good. Elvis even recorded this, but Bobby owns this song the way Johnny Cash owns Hurt. You should react to that. If you don't cry you don't have a soul!

This beautiful song was written in 1955 for the film ‘Unchained’. It was a hit for several other artists before Bobby sang it and added several changes that singers have since tried to emulate (the octave jump in the last verse). Bobby had supreme control of his voice and his range was B2 to Eb6 which is well into counter tenor - a very rare ability. And yes, this was written as a solo and that’s why Bobby sang alone. Bill produced the studio version, played piano on it and even sang backup, although you need to listen carefully to pick him out. In this live version the Andy Williams orchestra was the backup.

Bob and Bill were natural entertainers. They had very, very different voice types, which makes Bill’s funny comment ‘I didn’t think it was going to be a hit’ sound more like « I can’t sing this for the life of me, but Bobby can, so go Bro ! ». Bobby’s voice is a miracle of nature, not just for its smooth emission, pure tones, but especially for the elegant, effortless way he stands and delivers. Look at his face when he’s finished: not a trace of sweat, just a sweet, satisfied but modest smile. Pavarotti was sweating profusely and seemed to have ran a marathon at the end of an opera aria.

In 1955 Alex North wrote the music as a theme for the prison film Unchained. The lyrics were written by Hy Zaret. This beautiful Righteous Brothers version was released in 1965 at the height of the Vietnam War which ran from 1955 - 1975. So when I hear this version it takes me back in time, to the late 60's, high school and "the draft" which sealed the fate of so many brave young boys by sending them into battle overseas. When I hear the song I visualize a lonely American soldier, crouched in that dark, filthy, wet jungle. Bone tired but writing a letter to "his girl" back home. I see his fellings pour out to her on paper, so similar to the lyrics in this song: "Oh my love, my darling, I hunger for your touch", "Time goes by so slowly & time can do so much. Are you still mine?" Then he closes his letter with a "haunting" promise & plea: "I'll be coming home, wait for me".

For the studio version you heard in 'Ghost' the other brother produced it, and also contributed some of the piano.

Great reaction I had commented earlier I was raised listening to the Righteous Brothers. My mom always listened to them on the radio or her records when cleaning the house when I was a kid. She has passed on now, and I still have her old vinyl collection, I even have her old player she used to play them on and it still works great. I listen to those records when I'm feeling nostalgic and wish this type of music would make a comeback I hope you will check out more of their stuff I recommend Soul and Inspiration, Rock and Roll Heaven

Phil Spector ,who was their producer at the time, considered it album filler and released it as a B-side. The single had "Unchained Melody," with no producer (Bill Medley actually produced it) credit on the label, as the flip to Gerry Goffin and Carole King's A-side "Hung on You," but many DJs preferred "Unchained Melody" and played that one instead. This infuriated Spector.

If you want a real switch (after you have listened to a few of their other hits "soul and inspiration" , “You’ve Lost That Loving Feeling”) then try Bill's "I wanna make love to you" as an example of their repertoire of capabilities.

The Righteous Brothers were not a "band." They were a vocal R&B duo. Bobby Hatfield did this solo. Recommendation: Jackie Wilson "Danny Boy" and the Platters "My Prayer" -- if you want to hear singers they just don't make anymore.

While it's true, they flipped a coin to see who would sing this song and Bill was glad it was a hit, initially he didn't think it was hit material. Hence, the reason he didn't get a pro to play piano on the studio version. Bill played. But here and in concert they, afterwards it was a pro playing.
