I was thinking exactly the same thing! I always love a recorded studio version of any song over a recorded live version yet Free Bird’s excellent studios version had the unfortunate fade out…..but holy crap….this exists! I am thinking that this is just how they ended in the studio however for some reason the production opted a fade out originally…what a find!

It's great that during the first part of the song, they give hints in the riffs, foreshadowing what's about to come down. They were an immensely talented and lyrical band. They aren't just shredding, with three guitars they maintain the lyricism throughout and layer in the building tension until that bird finally soars free

I will ALWAYS remember California as it was in that golden summer of 1979. Happy New Year:)

@@Isleofskye Yes. Oakland is across the bridge from San Fransico. Sounds like you had a really great trip!!!! Sorry to tell you that California is awful now. Everyone is moving out of there and NYC. Texas and FL are the new states. NC, TN, etc.. also. Too much crime and tents everywhere the eye can see. Urine, Feces, and Needles are everywhere. Pathetic!! The south and southwest are where everyone is moving. I've seen everyone from Elvis, to the Stones, Led Zeplin, James Brown to Jackson Browne...I've seen well over 200 concerts. This is the first time I've heard the extended ending. I understand now why they do that in the live video. I bought this album originally in the 70s and that version on the LP (The regular released version) fades before that final ending of the last minute or two. This must be from a later special edition collection album of previously unreleased versions. Because this extended mix was never available to any of us publicly back in those days and it certainly wasn't on the LP or what the album stations would play. Very cool hearing this version for the first time

It's really funny most people do not know that Lynyrd Skynyrd was the first Southern Rock band that used three lead quality guitarist 1. Gary Rossington, 2. Allen Collins, an in the last year before the plane crash 3. Steve Gaines. Gary Rossington is that slid lead at the beginning and Allen Collins was the lead soloist with Steve Gaines doing the middle lead to the solo at the end. And we can't leave out the bassist Leon Wilkinson and Drummer Artimus Pyle with Bill Powell on keyboard. Ronnie VanZant built that band and he was the force behind it all. If there is anything you want to know about Skynyrd feel free to ask because I know this group inside and out top to bottom. I'm 65 years old so I was raised on Southern Rock such as LS and a host of others.

I have never, ever heard that ending before. I've listened to this song about a million times, and I do not know that recording. That's crazy.

Or them doing the opposite side of Freebird, a song called, I Need You. Another that you both would enjoy is called, " On the Hunt."

I've watched a lot of reactions to this song. Y'all got it! When the young lady said " They Jammin". That's exactly what they are doing. It's not really a guitar solo. It's JAMMIN!! Thanks for your reaction.

???. Duane Allman's. Thanks for the reference I guess. Gary Rossington is playing a GibsonSG and doing the bottle slides fills. Yes Duane is a great slide player? Maybe say that when they play his songs, and or band.
