FIRST TIME WATCHING | Airplane (1980) | MOVIE REACTION
Airplane Movie Description:
This spoof comedy takes shots at the slew of disaster movies that were released in the 70s. When the passengers and crew of a jet are incapacitated due to food poisoning, a rogue pilot with a drinking problem must cooperate with his ex-girlfriend turned stewardess to bring the plane to a safe landing.
Airplane! (alternatively titled Flying High!) is a 1980 American parody film written and directed by David and Jerry Zucker and Jim Abrahams, and produced by Jon Davison. It stars Robert Hays and Julie Hagerty and features Leslie Nielsen, Robert Stack, Lloyd Bridges, Peter Graves, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, and Lorna Patterson. The film is a parody of the disaster film genre, particularly the 1957 Paramount film Zero Hour!, from which it borrows the plot and the central characters, as well as many elements from Airport 1975 and other films in the Airport film series. The film is known for its use of surreal humor and its fast-paced slapstick comedy, including visual and verbal puns, gags, and obscure humor.
Airplane! was released by Paramount Pictures and was a critical and financial success, grossing $158 million worldwide against a budget of $3.5 million. The film's creators received the Writers Guild of America Award for Best Adapted Comedy, and nominations for the Golden Globe Award for Best Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy and for the BAFTA Award for Best Screenplay.
In the years since its release, the film's reputation has grown substantially. The film was ranked 6th on Bravo's '100 Funniest Movies'. In a 2007 survey by Channel 4 in the United Kingdom, it was judged the second-greatest comedy of all time, behind Monty Python's Life of Brian. In 2008, it was selected by Empire magazine as one of 'The 500 Greatest Movies of All Time' and in 2012 was voted #1 on the 'The 50 Funniest Comedies Ever' poll. In 2010, the film was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant".

Just a point to note: The sound volume of the actual movie was too low. It was much lower than the sound of you two guys talking. It meant that it always sounded like you guys were shouting but if we turned the sound down it was difficult to hear the movie. You need to listen to what appeared on your telecast so you can get a better balance of sound.

There are so many 1970's cultural references in this movie that are probably lost on so many who were not around then. The woman who thinks about her husband and his coffee preferences is a parody of a popular coffee commercial from that time. There were also many character actors in this movie from both TV and films of the time. The old woman sing in the hospital was Ethel Merman, once known as the first lady of musical comedies because of her distinctive, powerful voice.

@chuckster255
@chuckster255 3 жыл бұрын
Most people today, have no clue who the "man in the cab" was. His name was Howard Jarvis, not an actor but was well known here in California as a serious penny pincher, who was behind our state's 1978 ballot initiative known as "Proposition 13", officially known as the "People's Initiative to Limit Property Taxation". After it passed, Prop. 13 was credited with saving a lot of people in this state from losing their homes due to ever-increasing property tax bills. I don't remember the final amount on the meter but to have Howard Jarvis still waiting in the cab at the end, while the meter was still climbing and having him say something like "I'll give the cab driver 10 more minutes but that's it", was great.

The guy in the cab was Howard Jarvis. He was the chief instigator in the passage of Prop 13, which limited property tax growth in California. The irony presented is Jarvis, who hated state government wasting tax dollars, sitting in a taxi, with the meter running, resulting in an unnecessary expense.

Airplane is a parody of a 1950s movie called Zero Hour and the 1970s series of airplane disaster movies. The first of that series was Airport. The 70s was full disaster movies: Earthquake, the Towering Inferno and Airport. Each had a plethora of major stars. Airplane does too: Lloyd Bridges (dramatic actor), Robert Stack (dramatic actor, hosted Unsolved Mysteries), Leslie Nielsen (comedic actor, later played in Naked Gun), Peter Graves (dramatic actor, was in the original Mission Impossible TV show) and Kareem Abdul Jabar (basketball legend).

That long shot showing the cockpit controls had a couple of cuts where it moved to a different panel. It may have seemed like an impossibly large number of switches and dials, but it is actually no exaggeration - the plane is a Boeing 707, a type which first flew in 1958, making it one of the first jets ever built. All cockpits from that time were very complex. If you think the 707 cockpit looks intimidating, check out the Concorde cockpit sometime. Modern cockpits are not nearly as complex since they rely a lot on computers and only require two pilots.

At the very end of the credits they show the guy who was in the taxi waiting for him to return. He says, "I'll give him 5 more minutes but that's it!" This is one of the very first end-credit scenes I've ever seen in a movie. And if you read the credits, in addition to all kinds of wacky things thrown in there, in the part where it says (like with most movies): "This motion picture is protected under the laws of the United States and other countries. Unauthorized duplication, distribution, or exhibition may result in civil liability or criminal prosecution. So there."

There's a sequel. If you have not seen Jaws, you will not understand the opening scene.

If you didn't watch the entire closing credits, you missed the last part of the story.

They did add the taxi guy to the end. It is the last scene after the credits have finished.

I think Top Secret has more wild gags than any of these movies. I thought Airplane 2 was an extremely lame attempt to duplicate the first movie.

Airplane 2 is not even close to this level - you feel strongly that is a rehash. Still funny but not so much. I'm not glad to say this because in that movie we have William Shatner!

It might be just me but I thought Airplane II was better. They go to the moon. William Shatner. Elain can sit on my face any time she wants. This is a movie you have to watch more than once because you will catch some of the gags the next times. Examples: It's a jet but we hear a prop aircraft and the hubcap rolling by at the end is the ambulance for Lisa the heart patient. Also, the guy is still in the taxi after the credits roll. Ted was in the Air Force but when he's in the bar where he first meets Elaine he's wearing a US Naval officer's uniform before the SNF threads. The fish washed up on the beach is a freshwater catfish. Finally, OTTO has his own IMDB webpage😎 NOTE: They do flash back to the guy in the taxi.

You need to check out the movie Heavy Metal. It's a animated movie released in 1981. It's definitely not a kids cartoon. It has one of the greatest soundtracks.
