The new rules encouraging 'Line-Hammer' make the game so much less visually appealing. There's something so satisfying about those old 4x5 units of infantry.

I completely agree. Changing the rules for the fighting rank would help, but it would probably require more tweaks.

Part of why these are fun…gives me something to look up. I think the way it worked in the pre-end times. Random movement was distance, but in a straight line.

One of the best batreps I've seen in a long time. Your first game deployment was a near perfect example of how to do refused flank. I believe your loses could be attributed to changes in your deployment strategy as much as anything else. Just an observation and either way excellent report, thank you for sharing.

Controlling the first game deployment was easier due to the lack of enemy units. I think the good old reliable corner deployment could be powerful, but I'm hesitant to use it since it always led to boring games back in the day. If the enemy don't want to get shot to death, they hide and take a draw.

Been really enjoying all your reports including these ones - thanks. Just finished the last game so while it's fresh in my mind I couldn't help wondering if the rules for shooting at the squig herd were followed correctly as it seems improbable that all the herders would remain and far more likely that they would have been among the casualties which I think has consequences. Also suspect that the goblins rolled rather better than the dwarfs in taking out those war machines so the hatred rule might well have saved you a load of points, not that I think rerolling to hit for hatred has ever made any sense, but it is what it is.

The first one is indeed incorrect. With Motley Crew you need to distribute the casualties evenly during shooting. 13 dead should mean 11 squigs and 2 handlers. On the squig herd too, the herd also has a rule that the handlers always occupy the last rank, so the herd was deployed incorrectly. Did it matter? Nope! But good to know

When you flee, or fall back in good order, the first thing you do is pivot to face directly away from the unit you are fleeing. That completely changes things - here it looks like you would end up where the dragon is. It creates loads of separation if you flee from an attack on your flank.

If you're talking about the Hammerers, I think the Irondrakes would prevent them from stopping in that space. So maybe they'd keep going but be facing a different way at the end? I guess this would mean fewer Hammerers would've taken a peril test.

Yeah sorry around 2:05. I was looking at the picture after you'd removed one organ gun so there was clearly space then,😊 only after you'd left it ?!. Fewer dangerous tests but you'd be facing to the right, not up maybe too far from the sea guard? Little Room to reform too. It might make no real difference at all, hard to judge from pictures. It's good to get into the habit of doing it correctly, at least mentally even if you don't move the models back and forth for when it does matter, probably Fleeing.

Wow, these tables are real shooting galleries! With new terrain rules (getting stuck in a forest doesn't leave you there for the reminder of the game) I was expecting more LOS blocking terrain all round, forests in the middle etc. As it is, a shooty army couldn't help but to have a field day.

You're generally not allowed to place terrain in the middle. Objectives are the exception.

I think that Warmachines were over-nerfed. I agree that the old gunline was insane, and shooting monsters off the table turn 1 was detrimental - but It would be better if warmachines got a point discount alongside their nerf, and were more limited in the maximum number you could take. It's so hard to justify the cost of a cannon or GT, for the complete lack of output. They could be a lot cheaper, and just more limited in the number you can take.

It's more fun than useful. Most people count on their fingers or use dice to keep track of the score.

How did you feel the Slayer went? I was disappointed when you threw him away in the first game, but he always at least seemed to get involved after that. My overall impression is that he showed his vulnerability (and his arse of course) more than he succeeded in anything, but then he was faced with some tough tasks. Would he have had much chance of getting to attack on the charge in game 2 if you hadn't challenged with the ranger champion? Not sure what the initiative order would have been or how many attacks he might have had to survive first.

He's mostly in there as a comedy mascot. In the first game I wanted to tempt the Giant into an epic showdown, but my opponent obviously didn't take the bait. In later games I did try to make use of him, but it's very rare he gets to strike at anything. With clever positioning, a lone Slayer can definitely be a threat to a monster as a counter-attacker. I don't think he's worth having over a Gyrocopter or other similarly costed units.

@@Andy2D6 I can't see how he is either, but I do really want him to do well. On the admittedly limited basis of these reports it does rather look like guarding war machines might have changed a bit from fighting off relatively weak flyers and fast cavalry to battling lord-level heroes on flying monsters. Great for him thematically but something of a tall order. I'm still convinced that eventually I'll see him kill something big one day though!

at ca 49 min, you say the slayer is unbreakable and stays still, unbreakable still gives ground if they lose combat, they just do not make a break test

Yes it would seem to have made it considerably less useful especially against flyers and to some extent other fast things who can choose not to follow up and then go elsewhere if they want if it's their turn next - at least as long as they pass a Ld test and most of them will have high Ld of course.

still at game 2 (watching slow, had to do other stuff), regarding the knights in the flank of the hammerers, page 155 and 156 handles units in the flanks and give ground. the hammerers should have moved diagonally away from the warriors and knights and if they follow up they would do the same diagonal movement and keep the same relative positions in the front and flank.

2:03 I dont believe you have reformed at the correct position as you would have pivoted away from the Dragon before FBiGO and then arrived on the other side of the reavers with no space to reform other than to face left at the reavers, in marching column towards the centre or facing right but maybe out of charge range of the Seaguard. Enjoyed the tournament report thanks!

Probably been said but last game with the mangler has now been faq’ed. Random movement units have to take the shortest route should they choose to get into contact using the normal charging rules

It's Grungni. Usually pronounced Grun-gi where the second 'n' is silent (like Fungi). That's super pedantic I know, but I've never heard it pronounced any other way until discovering this channel a week or two ago. Love the army though sir, looks great. ;)

In your opening shot of your army, your artillery is on a hill. Made me think Dwarfs should get a free hill to deploy, similar to how Wood Elves get a free forest. At this point, Dwarfs need all the help they can get.

On the rules front while I don't have much reason to think you played anything much wrong that you didn't pick up on I do think that some fairly bad rules were shown up at least assuming they were played right. Firstly the one you've talked about quite a bit which you definitely have right - the 'no stand and shoot against random movers'. Didn't cost you here as it did in one of your previous reports, but it's hard to see how it makes any real sense. Why does it matter to the Dwarfs whether something running towards them is doing so with a completely random distance rather than a semi-random one (i.e. normal charge)? If anything it would be more logical if you could S&S against any random mover that moves towards you from within its potential movement range though as this would probably make them close to unusable allowing S&S if they reach would seem like a fair compromise. The Hammerers FBIGO through all those units in game 4 is a ridiculous outcome though I imagine correct. Probably difficult to see how it should be rewritten but very hard to like. I suppose they did suffer a load of casualties for their trouble, but still. The Hammerers' disordered charge in game 2 feels all wrong - if it's played right (no reason to think it wasn't) then it's another example of 'linehammer' nonsense as you've a load of models getting attacks who have got one of their own units between them and the enemy. I accept that lines are going to be necessary for my Dwarfs, but can't pretend to like stuff like this even if this particular incident is probably one that won't happen that much. Does a fanatic remaining alive really stop you getting the points for their unit? Seems totally unfair as you're not allowed to kill them anymore which is also a bad rule in itself. Don't much like the new fanatic rules to be honest, think there should definitely be ways of forcing them to be released and probably more restriction on how many goblins you have to have per fanatic etc.

Game 3, Dwarf mirror match. When the evil dwarf hammerer unit was down to just the one Joe and the King, could the king have left teh hammerer and charged your hammerer unit? Then have his longbeards charge the slayer, kill the slayer and then crash into your hammerers and fight again? Sure that might give you the opportunity to direct attacks from the slayer to the incoming unit , thereby ensuring the evil hammerer unit survives. However, the evil hammerer champion could have issued a challenge to the slayer. Now you need to root for the slayer's glorious death to save a double whammy against your hammerers. or, (back to the question) does that no longer happen in ToW?

I don't think you can leave a unit and immediately charge, but I'd have to check on that.

You can only move out of a unit in the “remaining moves” sub phase now I think.

Everytime I see large blocks of warriors in an army I sigh.. love the models and the fluff, but they are rubbish in the game..

Just dont rely on apps so much. Best practice is to actually review the rules when learning a new game instead of relying on a probably rushed to get out app. List building in TOW is very straightforward.

No edition auto passes armour saves of a 1, a 1 always failed :) It sounds like your chaos warriors back in the day weren't played right 😂

Linehammer is clearly a real thing. 😮 And it looks weird. To improve the look of the game and improve balance, they should go truly old school and allow units to fight/shoot in 1 to 4 ranks based on weapon/type. Pikes could fight in 4 ranks. Other foot in 3 ranks. Mounted in 2 ranks. Foot could shoot in 2 ranks and mounted in 1 rank. It would look better and makes sense.

That Gyrocopter is not really 90s. It was released along with the Dwarf stuff in 6th Ed, early 2001.

@@Andy2D6 Bit surprised your Dwarf opponent didn't pick up on it straight away! Not sure it really mattered all that much though and his rangers outshot yours anyway - I think mainly because he had first turn so you were always behind in number of shots even though he was -1 to hit?
