Eastshade Review: Exploring Alternatives to Combat

Eastshade attempts to make an open world game without combat, and in doing so, leaned on the open world's other main gameplay pillar: exploration. The result is an interesting world packed to the brim with cool things to discover and little rewards for the observant player, but like many other open world games, it can be a little rough around the edges.

this seems so fantastic. Honest emphasis on exploration for the pure joy of exploration seems something often lost in a lot of games these days. We don't need mad xp or loot to incentivize wandering. If the world is just a joy, wandering is enough.

I love this. One of my favorite parts of Zelda: BOTW was taking in the scenery and taking pictures. Having an entire game built from the ground up around exploration and making paintings sounds great.

There are IMO some important things you didn't mention: - Most of the quests aren't actually fetch quests but require you to interact with the environment in ways that open world games usually don't. By that, I mean that usually, it's either "shoot this" and "fetch that". At least I can't think of another open world game where you can use items in the environment to solve a puzzle. - There is less empty space in the environment than in AAA games. I thought back to games such as Skyrim and how long you have to walk from one point to the next. In Eastshade, things are mostly close to one another but there is STILL a lot of opportunity to explore. Genius world design. (I also noticed this when playing The Outer Worlds recently. They tried to vary things by putting a river here and a group of rocks there but in the end, all of that didn't seem as well-designed and interesting as the environment in Eastshade.) - The crafting system is basic but at least I found it surprising how many things there are to craft . - There may not be combat but I for one got punched in the face pretty early on in the game. ;) (And there are some pretty dramatic story lines)

What a fantastic idea for a channel! Playing the first five hours of indie games and then giving us the what's what. This is so far up my alley that I'm surprised I haven't stumbled over it one way or another already. This is great!

I'm playing this at present. It's really well done. Without a doubt the stage design is really good. Though I suspect that might have been lost on the player to an extent were it not for the core artist profession/exploration loop. I find that while I'm thinking about the capturing of paintings you take things slower and start really seeing the beauty. More so even than with photography, because you start thinking about how good it might look stylized on a canvas.

I didn't find bugs or glitches when I played it. But if I must say that the system or mechanics of inspiration, is bad, very bad. Instead of giving variations of teas, which do not serve much, I would have put a system in which you should collect plants and materials to use as dyes or paints. And instead of inspiration, we would use energy or stamina, which the character would recover by sleeping. And you would not miss the element of continuing to explore new colors, and at the same time, do not limit yourself to painting only what you are asked for. In addition, having a limitation of initial colors, and then getting more variety, the same game would invite you to revisit and paint the same scene, with more vivid colors. Even with that against, this game has made me fall in love.

I'd love it if it had a built-in painting program that allows you to actually paint with a digital drawing tablet. I'm a digital painting nerd, so... that would be awesome, but only if you could turn it off and play with the current system.

Oh I love the idea of showing up at the tavern at the right time and seeing a performance. It reminds me of my favorite thing about Oblivion, one of the precious few times that the old Morrowind world building came back: If you were in the Mages Guild, on certain times and days there would be actual classes. There would be a lecture teaching the speakers theories. If I remember right, they would talk about the lost Ayleids and perhaps of the Oblivion Gates. Wonderfully, the things they’d discuss, sometimes the details were wrong (the same way scientists honing in on the truth with limited info often are). That said, there were things you’d only learn from these talks, and you could go out into the world to the very places discussed. (This is all based on ancient memory and may be mistaken. While even today I can go back to Morrowind, Oblivion hasn’t got the same draw.)

Damn, I don't usually pay heed to the types of games you usually do, but there is something very special here. The point of the game is just to experience, to absorb. It's not every day you find something like this. Hey btw, does Eastshade have an end? This could be a good point to bring in your reviews: "Does a game have an end or not?"

It's worth more than $10 for sure. If you're not willing to pay more than $10 then it can't look that cool to you anyway because you don't talk about how great something is while also thinking that it doesn't have much worth.

What does 5 hours mean? 5 hours of witcher 3 for example? 5 hours of pillars of eternity? 5 hours of path of exile? 5 hours of any game of decent length mean nothing at all. You skip the narrative threading. You skip progression. You skip the ending I couldn't disagree more with this format. It's lazy plain and simple.
@FirstFive
@FirstFive 5 жыл бұрын
Normally I move on and just let random youtube comment criticism lie, but you kind of illustrated the exact reason why this channel exists with your own statement. That's the whole point: what _does_ five hours of The Witcher 3, Pillars of Eternity, or Path of Exile get you? Nothing. An introduction zone. So if you only have five hours to play a game, then you're not going to get anything out of them. That doesn't make them bad games, in fact I played and enjoyed all three back when I actually used to have free time, but it makes them a bad fit _for people who don't have 100 hours to invest into them._ That's why you don't see me reviewing something like Red Dead Redemption 2 or AC: Odyssey, because those games are obvious bad fits for this channel, while Eastshade, a comparatively much shorter open world game, fits great. Your definition of "decent length" is wildly different from my own. I think a game like Gris or Dusk that takes like three hours to finish is a perfectly decent length. For a lot of people, including myself, it takes a lot just to find more than five hours to put into a game, which means for those people, five hours may be all they ever see. Those are the people I make these videos for, and for that audience, finding short games that you can get a reasonable amount of entertainment out of - even, perhaps, a fully formed narrative with a beginning, middle, and ending - in a few hours is important, and there are plenty of games to explore that address that need. And if you only enjoy lifestyle games that you can play every day for a year or massive RPGs that take hundreds of hours to finish, that's your prerogative, but you're not going to get much value out of my channel. It doesn't make either of us wrong, just different. The industry is large enough that these two views can both exist simultaneously depending on what an individual person needs out of a game. I'm sorry if you're not a part of my target audience, but there's value in what I do, even if you personally don't see it.
@iluvatarchem

Yeah, I definitely agree that there are some games that it would be silly for me to review, and I unfortunately don't have precognition, so I sometimes stumble into games that are longer than I bargained for, but I try to keep to stuff that you could reasonably complete in a short amount of time.
