the coolest recent discovery is that giant spider crabs living in the Mariana trench have a symbiotic relationship with both certain species of seahorses in which male seahorses release a fluid that is consumed by the crab because it contains many nutrients and proteins. This fluid often washes onshore and is commonly known as sea honey.

The kitefin shark lives so deep that only blue light waves reach that part of the ocean. Its bioluminescent belly is the same color as the light coming down, so it blends in with the surface when something is looking up at it from below. It's a form of active camouflage that's pretty common with creatures that live in that zone of the ocean. Also, the kite fin shark was first scientifically described in 1788, so the most "recent" discovery is over 200 years old.

My thoughts exactly when they brought it up. It's the bioluminescence that's a pretty recent discovery, not the species itself. But then again when it comes to these kinds of videos "research" (at the most) entails a google search, sloppily browsing through and then copypasting info from the top result (context is for suckers anyway right?) so what can one really expect.

Where do you find this? I can only find that is is just a defensive mechanism they use in order to effectively create a smoke cloud and scare predators away. It wouldn't make sense for it to be tasty, the animals in question might follow it around for more which just has the opposite effect of what would be the desired outcome of a defensive mechanism (not being eaten) Edit: Most definitely for hiding and is toxic. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aplysia_gigantea 'The species is known to have toxic effects on terrestrial organisms, particularly domestic dogs.[4] Exposure to this species with dogs has been associated with the development of neurotoxicosis, with symptoms ranging from respiratory distress to tremors, muscle fasciculations, and seizures.[4]'

For the record, the wandering meatloaf was discovered over a decade ago, if you search up the creature on KZfaq the first video to pop us is from ten years ago. Like seriously, none of these sea creatures are crazy, so they could've at least chosen ones that were actually recently discovered.

The Icelandic river worm monster thing that was caught on camera or whatever was recorded like ten years ago. I recently read the article about it and it was posted in 2012. I remember when the footage of that thing was on the news and it's not a river monster, it just looks like a bunch of ice or just some trash being dragged along by the stream. Lagarfljóts ormurinn (The Lagarfljóts worm) is just a really old legend of this worm that kept growing in a river cuz this woman wanted her gold ring to grow but the worm did instead. Not a real thing but the legend is pretty interesting. And what was shown in the video is not even the actual footage that was "caught"

Is it true that sea horses plant honey in the deep sea
@thefolder3086
@thefolder3086 2 жыл бұрын
Yes. They work with megalodon to capture silky sharks and store them in deep sea caves . It would slowly produce sea honey that would be eaten by crabzilla along with sea cucumbers . The sea cucumber combined with crabzillerase enzymes in the crabzilla’s stomach and sea honey would become sea pickles. ✨Such a rare delicacy.✨

About the shark glowing to make itself invisible: It's a commonly understood principle called counter-illumination. If you're looking up at something from below, it's going to appear as a shadow in the water because it's blocking natural sunlight, and thus most things are very easy to see from below. If you intentionally illuminate your own bottom to replicate some of the natural sunlight you're blocking, you become much harder to make out. This was tested as a form of visual camouflage on airplanes during WWII by strapping searchlights to the bottom of planes pointing at their own underbelly. A related principle is counter-shading, where creatures are just lighter colored on the bottom to make it harder to see them. White bellies are common across the animal kingdom for this reason, from sharks to squirrels.

1:30 This adaptation is referred to as "counterillumination". The first time I ever heard of it was on the deep sea episode of Blue Planet, which featured the hatchetfish (Argyropelecus spp.) which has counterillumination as one of its many methods of camouflage. Hatchetfish have photophores on their belly which project light to mask their silhouette by matching the intensity of downwelling sunlight from the ocean's surface. You can see a really good example of it during that episode of Blue Planet if it still doesn't make much sense- they did a terrific job visualizing it in action! Love the content, from a fellow biologist! Considering showing clips of your videos in my classroom, particularly those about not trusting random videos online.

5:36 Another thing that could‘ve brought them there are saltwater tanks on big ships. Some cargo hauling ships are build to flood their bays with the outside seawater, to stay at an optimal level to the sea, when not hauling cargo. It‘s quite common for aquatic live to get caught in these proceedings and then get transferred to the native harbour of the ship.
