Pretty impressive setup. Years ago a number of us in Southeast Missouri raised angelfish and hauled them to Beldt's in St. Louis once they got quarter size. Beldt's shipped them all over the U. S. and Europe. I can still hear the hugh airpump I had running day and night. It heated the whole basement and powered everything!

@Mike's Fish Room / +Mike's Fish Room / #Mike's Fish Room Saw you had plants in pots inside the bare bottom tank of yours for... Attempt of raising it? Either way, you can try gravel filter on them. Basically do a split off with low air pressure to bubble through each container to suck in water and nutrients. Should help to filter out stuff along with the sponge. Might also help out with the plant growth a lot better as well if they are root based. Basically, do holes at the bottom portion of the cylinder. Two holes you press the airline through. Poke a hole in the airline with a hot thicker needle. Do this across a few of those pots. Place some gravel at the bottom with finger substrate at the top if you wish. Then simply add it onto your air pump line and voila. Gravel filter in pot format. With lower air pressure, it will make the Sponge be the main filtration while these are just... Assistance to the plants. Also, for live food. You should probably try Daphnia which is fresh water equivalent of Brine Shrimp. This will not need rinsing which is an advantage plus you give your discus live feed that still move around inside the tank for them to chase.

+Helveteshit Thats a killer idea. I think your talking about my 40. in my 55 i have taken sports drink bottles cut slits all throughout with a solder gun and lined them with mesh. each pot gets a piece of root tab and they have blown up! i just move my plants around so much that building something that connects to my air manifold would be a mess. I only pot them because i choose to run bottomless due to cleaning but still have to have my plants! Thanks for watching and giving such a great idea!

When you have angelfish that haven't spawned yet like the kois you where showing in this video you can always take some water from a breeding pair like the ones that were breeding as you where filming this video and dump it in the water of the new pair to entice a breeding. Really cool old method of breeding and having the angelfish in the same cycle of spawning.

Hi Mike. I have a few questions. How do you have the time to put in all the work for these tanks and angels? And also in your experience, has it been profitable to breed angelfish? I have been breeding angelfish for a while, and I was close to breaking even, but I was not as organized and was not breeding to your scale of operations. Thanks.
@MikesFishRoom18 жыл бұрын
Hey! Thanks for watching and commenting! I have tried to make maintenance much easier. Running bare bottom tanks, placing heater low, running sponge filters and slowly removing my hob filters. This allows me to have cycled tanks and focus on water changes and vaccing a bare bottom. I can now do 50% water changes and clean every tank spotless in around two hours. Also having every tank in the same location changes everything. I have only been selling Angels for a short period of time. I own a lawn care company and use some of the same rules of thumb went building price points. Make your money on your fish but if shipping, account for the styrofoam, insulation, all of the time it takes to process the order. My costs are fairly low in breeding. Other than the initial purchases in supplies, the residual expenses really come down to water usage and food for the Angels. Even when buying brine shrimp eggs, I spend more on the big jar that will last me more than a year.
@MikesFishRoom18 жыл бұрын
When it comes down to the time you put in breeding..... I don't make $hiz! But this is a hobby and passion that I enjoy so just being able to have it pay for itself is great! High profits are going to come down to high volume.

Just a quick tip for people that are feeding their fish probiotic fish food. Don't feed antibiotic fish food simultaneously with probiotic fish food because the probiotics (good bacteria for the intestines) will be eliminated by the antibiotics in the fish food. Of course many of you already know this but I am just trying to help the small percentage of people that don't know this. I'm sure Mike understands what I'm trying to say.

@MikesFishRoom18 жыл бұрын
6 months ago I would have given you a different answer, but I now have 11 mated pairs. The only two things that are a dead give away. The males are almost always larger. And... Their behavior. Your not going to know until they are mature enough but when they are, they will pair pretty fast. Also the females belly will constantly change shape. Filling and emptying eggs. How old are yours?

Hello, how do you cull your fish?
@MikesFishRoom18 жыл бұрын
Culling can be a very grey term. Culling to me means picking a selected bunch. If I'm culling for defects I look for bad gill plates, missing or bent fins, body symmetry, and runts. Runts of the litter will be more prone to heximita or other internal protozoans.
@youngz13o8 жыл бұрын
Hi Mike, thanks for that info. What do you do with the fish that you cull? I just started breeding and I'm getting odd balls like balloon shaped fish and runts, I'd like to keep those genes out of the genetic pool if possible
@MikesFishRoom18 жыл бұрын
+Matthew Ng I have large koi that I can feed them to. Freezing them is still considered humane. If it's a defect that they can live with, they can go in a community tank or even their own. If they can still have quality of life, it's a humane type of question. Runts will most likely only last a couple of months unless they get a growth spurt.
@MikesFishRoom18 жыл бұрын
+Matthew Ng if they are sick or I'll. Quarantine and treat them based on their symptoms. Runts are susceptible to wasting disease/sinking belly and heximita. Metronidazole is a great antibiotic for this.

Tanks are way to small, not fair for the fish.
@MikesFishRoom18 жыл бұрын
Well give me some detail in why. Do you think every single tank is over stocked? Do you think that 55 gallon tanks are too small for Angels? Do you feel that they suffer from poor water quality or that they are malnourished? I take corrective criticism very positively and in courage your opinion.
@Morsure008 жыл бұрын
I think that those fish should be free, living in a small tank/cage is wrong. Maybe one day overlords will come and put us in cages. Lets see if like it.
